Darling and Mrazek had a combined .895 last season.

This tandem is non-viable unless one of them completely and dramatically reverses his career trajectory. Otherwise we’ve basically already seen 2018-19 go down the crapper.

this also applies to ward.

the weak, money driven move was not retaining dead money to make Darling's fat ass disappear. once that was clear, ward was gone.

Cam looked gassed playing 40 this year. A great backup, but I don't think he has the it in him to do 60 at a high level any more.

Lehner probably isn't settling for 1 year.

If you're going to give something a whirl, the young guy on a cheap 1 year deal who's done it in the past is probably as good as it gets, but still stinks.

"Petr brings a lot of experience for a young goalie," said Waddell. "We expect to have healthy competition for the starter's crease this fall."

rolf. we look like bottom 5 team in entire league as of now.

Bottom 5?

When was the last time any team went into a season with a tandem like this? It hasn’t been recently I’m pretty sure.

Who is still actually looking for a goalie? NYI, and they are rumored to be looking at Anderson? Maybe we still sign Lehner? You would have think we get a starting goaltender from one of the three.. I think the competition Wadell is referring to is probably needaspellcheck though.

What competition? Nedeljkovic-Mrazek-Darling? To paraphrase an old college football axiom: if you have 3 possible starting goaltenders then you don't have any.

Mrazek was the best goalie prospect in the World for a good while. I’m likely way more optimistic about him than most. Even so, this is the worst goaltending tandem in the league by a significant margin and that includes the Islanders duo or Greiss and nobody.

If Mrazek is going to succeed he needs some stability behind him (whatever the opposite of Scott Darling is). Our goaltending corps seems like it could start rolling downhill fast at the drop of a pin.

God, this organization sucks. It sucks so much, in so many different ways. It seems every year, some aspect of the team just gets slightly worse than the year before. Not really noticable in a year-by-year basis, but extremely noticable if you look at it overall.

Eventually, they've got to realize spending money is the only way this team improves. But sure, let's try and cheap out again. I'm sure THIS time, it'll work.

We tried to get Grubs (made a better offer) and I think we might have been the ones that Hutton turned town when offering more money. We have passed the Flyers as the goalie graveyard.

Who knows what the deal with Lehner is.

I think we gave it our best shot to improve goaltending and this was the best we could get.

There was nothing to spend money on. The goalie market was very weak; it was a potential long-term solution in Grubauer, a bunch of backups and failed starters. They tried for the top option and were financially committed enough to take on Orpik, but Washington didn't want to deal in the division. What was the expectation here?

It's 1 year deal. They can try again next year, if neither Darling nor Mrazek nor Nedeljkovic works out.

I'm no apologist, but the freak out is excessive. This was a case of bad timing.

Lehner was the only palatable decision left. And we went with the dumpster fire option.

I mean, sure, we can argue about which of Lehner or Mrazek are less bad. But let's be clear: once we missed on Gru, all the options left were gambles that were going to make a lot of people unhappy. Including resigning Ward.

Now the only open question is whether there's a goalie deal to be had involving Skinner and/or Faulk -- and the answer is probably no.

I'm lost here. Didn't the team agree to take on Orpik's contract as part of the Grubaeur deal that Washington nixed? And I'm sure they would have paid Grubaeur pretty much the same that Colorado did.

Also, I'm really not seeing how people are coming to the conclusion that Ward was let go over money. I think it as very likely that there was simply no offer at all. Mrazek is a huge wild card and could end up being terrible, but Ward is pretty much guaranteed to be below average like has been for the past six years.
