I thought the same but I came across a post from Brock Otten on the OHL Prospect blog back in July.
Here is an excerpt:

Just to remind you, CHL clubs are permitted to carry only two import players on their team or protected list every year. However, if a CHL team has an Import who was an NHL first round pick they receive the opportunity to add another player to their protected list to cover should that first round import make the pro level. There are other scenarios which can allow you to carry the rights of three (such as having an OA Import, having an Import on their protected list who didn't show the year prior, having a player signed to an NHL contract on your list, etc). It is a pretty complicated process.

It's as clear as mud!

I agree with this. The Petes are headed for the 2nd overall pick in the import draft at the rate they are going.
Early prediction........the Petes select a player from Czechia to help with the transition for Novotny and this player.
Here are details on 4 top Czech players eligible for the 2025 NHL draft; take your pick:

Radim Mrtka, RD, HC Oceláři Třinec (2025 NHL Draft) 6'6", 200lbs Radim Mrtka - Stats, Contract, Salary & More

2025 NHL Draft Profile: Radim Mrtka - Recruit Scouting

Radim Mrtka is a massive right-handed defenceman who is a pure A-rated prospect. He moves well for his size, can carry the puck up the ice, and regularly joins the rush. He also possesses a powerful point shot. What sets Mrtka apart is his hockey IQ and attention to small details, which make him an intriguing player to watch. I particularly like his aggressive challenges against opposing players, as he knows how to use his reach effectively.

While I’ve mentioned that younger players are getting more ice time, unfortunately, Mrtka has been facing more limitations recently. He’s been given less ice time and was even sent down to Třinec’s farm team for one game.

Štěpán Černý, LD, Mountfield HK U20 (2025 NHL Draft) 5'6", 140lbs

played with Novotny last year, undersized but great offensive Dman

The Czech defender plays in the Czech Extraliga U20, where he has played 11 games so far and scored 6 points. Stepan Cerny can read the play, as he continually makes very good guesses regarding the movement of opponents to get into position and break up offensive plays. Many times, he knows how the play will unfold before it happens, adding to his dependability on defence.

This season, Černý has been good under pressure. He keeps his nerve in high-pressure moments, using his solid edgework to stay balanced and agile as forwards come at him. His lateral movement is especially effortless, with gaps being shut quickly as attackers are forced into worse positions.

Vojtech Cihar, LW, HC Energie Karlovy Vary (top league in Czechia) (2025 NHL Draft) 6'1", 190lbs

Vojtech Cihar - Stats, Contract, Salary & More

Jan Skok, LD, HC Plzeň (top league in Czechia) (2025 NHL Draft) 6', 200lbs

Jan Skok - Stats, Contract, Salary & More
Petes have to go and draft Czech star and Novotny best buddy Adam Benak. They were electric together at Hlinka

That would be the dream! Gotta steal Benak from Youngstown!

And that’s exactly the type of import swing I was talking about. Capitalize on being bad and take another stud

If you’re an OHL gambler, good night to bet on the Petes. They have reinforcements back which should give them a boost and Gens going to their backup who really struggled the last game. Can get Petes moneyline at +285

Might not feel like it right now but with McCallum/Bryant in the lineup, and especially once Fitzgerald comes back, this is no longer a bad team. They have as much F depth as most teams in the East now, just not necessarily that top end guy who can take over. Likely won't make the playoffs because the start was so bad, but the Petes have offensive depth now and Bowen can steal any game for them. They could easily be a 40%+ winning % team the rest of the way if they stay healthy and Bowen keeps playing well. Brighter days ahead Petes fans

*if it's any consolation I did bet the Petes tonight because I genuinely thought they were going to win, so I lost money on that*

Thanks for those kind words. I like to believe that they will be able to slowly turn the corner and the last few games have started to look like it. They just can’t get over the hump and get that first win. I hope they can start to string some wins together and as you say operate around 40%. I like to think they could do it. Have been playing a lot more structured and hung in there against a very lethal generals team. Let’s hope they can round the corner soon

Can someone give me a reason why Ryder McIntyre shot in the shootout? Hot stick lately or not, that was a mistake
I agree. I thought the 3 shooters for each team would be Sennecke, Ritchie and Barlow for the Gens and Melee, Taylor and Bryant for the Pete’s. 0 clue why McIntyre went.

I agree with User13452 with the Young call too. And I’d put McCallum ahead of mcintyre too lol.

There will be a period where they win a couple games in a row I’m sure. They’d had what 5 close games in a row? Ever since you guys did the home and home with Oshawa you’ve looked like a completely different team despite not getting the result you want at the end of the games.

I suspect it was because he had played a pretty good game. At least the first half, he was excellent. Then he seemed to kind of turn it off.

I really thought they had it last night. Hopefully this weekend they get one.

Bryant looked good. Worked hard and looked like a good vocal leader on the ice. Nice to see McCallum back. He brought some much needed life into the lineup.

20 straight losses going back to the end of last season I’m somewhat surprised the whole coaching staff is still intact. At what point does there have to be a move made? 30 straight losses??

Wilson in year 1/8
Verner, Oke, O’Connor in year 1/3
I realize Wilson isn’t going anywhere but Verner has been with the team since 2012 imo he would be the one to let go. Based on those 3 guys getting 3 year deals I bet Wilson has a opt out in his contract after the third year

There won't be. Not with how long Wilson is locked up for. We get this "watching paint dry" hockey for a long, long time.
The passivity is just too much. I get the 1-1-3, if that's what he thinks he needs to do, he's not the first and won't be the last, but at one point on three on three last night he sent out Page - Jenken - Strohack. There is no chance that trio is scoring a goal against Oshawa's dynamic players. You already have the one point at that point... what are we doing here?
