T.O.
If they know they can't keep him at a reasonable price then they should maybe take a run at trying to acquire Askarov in a separate trade since Nashville seems to be comfortable running with Saros. Colorado needs a replacement for Georgiev come playoff time if they want to have a good shot at another cup. I don't know what the Rangers needs are in particular but NY could still come out the other side of this better overall with the right moves. Paying a goalie 11M+ is just not the play.
The same Askarov that got traded to San Jose?

Some names earning 8+:
Thomas Hertl
PLD
Bo Horvat
Patrik Laine
Travis Konecny
Timo Meier
Mat Barzal
Nurse
Benn
Stamkos

These guys don't even sniff Shesterkin in terms of game impact, yet he is supposed to get paid closer to them as opposed to other game breakers?

There are guys that are getting paid 10+ mill that don't have a single playoff run like his to even get to that contract and he's pushing it asking for 12+ million?

If you don't think he's worth 12+ million name all the players that are clearly better than him in the playoffs, at best you can say McDrai or maybe add in a few other names, so he's what? The 5th best playoff performer currently? Well what is the 5th best salary? It's already 12+million right now, with the cap going up, it'll likely push to 13 and maybe even 14 soon.

The absolute worst case scenario if he wanted to sign a contract on the market would be 11+ million which would be the easiest signing for probably 10+ teams the very second he is available. So is New York really going to haggle over 1-2 million? If so should Edmonton have demanded McDrai stay at around 11 as well so they could get more help?

You make it work for someone like him because the alternative could be infinitely worse (see any of the names I listed or you can see some of the horrendous duds making 10+ million who never accomplished anything close to what he did to even GET the contract, forget about them living up to the contract).

They should say final offer and gamble that he accepts. He'd have to get more than 12.5M in free agency to match that contract and he risks getting injured or hitting a slump and getting Klingberg'd.

Either that or give him 10M x 8 and an additional 30M+ in deferred money to be paid out after 2033.

The longer they wait the more they'll have to pay. I'm guessing the cap progressions will only get higher

What makes you think igor is worth 13-15m+?
I'd say he's the top player in the league at his position, or close to it. Draisaitl just set the mark at 14 AAV

Him having the occasional bad game doesn't change that. The top forwards and Dmen have that too

Has anybody put out the structure of the contract he was offered? Maybe he wants everything in signing bonuses and the Rangers don’t want to structure it that way.

You never know. Not too many teams need a goalie and/or can afford 10+ million/year on one next offseason.

And what if Igor's play tails off a bit or...He gets injured.

Also you have to think he very much wants to stay in New York.

Add it all up and the rangers will probably make him the #1 paid goalie, but in the 10-11M/year range - Not near 12M.

Hellebuyck makes it 8.5.

Not too sure what his ego is like but he might want to be the first goalie to sign a 100 mil contract? 12.5 x 8. Rangers are in big trouble if they lose him.

Hellebuyck makes it 8.5.
Already addressed, he has had some outright atrocious playoffs, some mediocre playoffs and he only has 1 playoffs where he played like how Shesty has played his entire playoff career. Oh and he is 3 years older and has twice the mileage

Never said he was? It’s a fair contract though - so whats an example of “the league losing their damn minds” regarding goalie contracts?
The difference between a perennial Vesina contender and a guy who has only split time is $250k/year? Swayman is no where near Hellebuyck. That's the difference Bob winning the Cup makes. Suddenly goaltending is much more important than after the year Aiden Hill wins.

fair. however i think you need to consider the team in front of the tender. last year in particular the jet's were dogsh@! against colorado. rangers I would argue had a better team and a better defense in front of shesterkin. Both goalies have taken their team to the conference finals, they've also lost in the first round. When it comes to the ability to stack a team through free agency and trades the rangers have a much much easier time fielding a more stacked team. Having a better team and espeically defensive core that can limit high danger chances you'll have better numbers.

Hellebuyck also signed on October 9, 2023.

People need to stop using him as some sort of comparison bar. It's a different environment now. By the time Shesty signs (with whomever), it'll basically be 2 contract seasons since Hellebuyck signed his deal.

It is in no way, shape or form a comparable.

Bob’s contract is.

Bobrovsky signed for $10 million AAV x 7 in the summer of 2019, for 12.27% of the cap for the 19/20 season. 12.27% of the projected 2025 cap of $92 million is $11.3 million. So of course Shesterkin is going to want more than $11 million AAV - especially because the environment at the moment, projected, is for the cap to continue to ascend rapidly.

While Bob’s time in Florida had some ups and downs, he won a Cup and has a good shot at more hardware so the idea that you can’t win with your goalie making 12+% of the cap is stupid. It just has to be a great goalie and you can’t have a bunch of salary f-ups littered over the rest of your roster. I submit to you that Shesterkin is that kind of great goalie.

He might WANT to be, but there's something called reality. What team can or would give him that on the open market (and how many teams would Igor want to uproot and go to compared with NY)? Assuming none then why would the rangers give it to him?

Also consider that Carey Price contract gives him 10.5M/year. Bobrovsky gets 10M and Vasilevskiy gets 9.5. Are the rangers really going to reset the goalie market by 2M? I don't see it.

Again Igor gets in the 10-11M/year range when all is said and done.

12.5 x 8. First 100 mil goalie. He’s the Rangers best player. And he’s their key to winning. He’s got them over a barrel.

Bob signed 5 years ago. It’ll be a 6 year-old contract by the time Shesterkin signs. There’s no way Shesterkin should take less than the same % of cap which puts him at nearly $11.5.

Add to that the overall climate where the cap is not only going up but you’ve got players and agents rightfully saying “hey you owners are making money hand over fist while the cap and our salaries stayed the same for 3 seasons”. Team values have gone up from $667 million in 2019 with 6% growth to $1.79 billion in 2024 with some teams values growing at 35+%.

Shesterkin should fire his agent if he can’t get him to $12 million and a new goalie standard.
