People who think Nathan Mackinnon is the best player in the world, can we all just be kind of agree that… he’s not?

I hope we get to see Hughes. I am pretty sure we will and I can't wait.

To me Makar is easily the best player on the planet. He impacts the game all over the ice like no one else can. He dominated the Finland game even though he didn't get any points. He makes the whole team better. Hughes is close behind. Forwards can be shut down.
We won't see Hughes Thursday unless there is an injury to one of Team USA's defenseman.....Hughes is otherwise ineligible. He can't simply replace a guy in the lineup who is a healthy scratch. Any player they pull out would need to be injured....I'm sure there are shady ways around that though.

On your other point....you seem to be suggesting the best player in the world must be a dman because forwards can be shut down? How does that even make sense? Not suggesting the best player needs to be F, D or G....but just trying to figure out your logic. Can't defenseman be shut down as well?

Well, it's a lot harder to do because the defending forwards have their assignments on an incoming rush and the puck-rushing D doesn't have a dedicated marking player.

I can sort of see where people are coming from when they say Makar is the best in the world, but do people actually believe Quinn Hughes is the best? Hmm, either way none of them are better or more impactful than McDavid.

The consensus was always that he was firmly #2/3. Anyone thinking otherwise was just a vocal minority. The guys f***ing nasty, just enjoy him. Theres no doubt at his peak he can match a McDavid like talent for periods of time, but I think 85% of people are still taking McDavid.

Pretty hilarious how this became an immediate shit on Edm fan thread, even though majority of the Oil fans in here are being pretty fairly level headed. For how much discourse there is around oiler fans being "insecure", it sure seems like the first argument for a lot of Avs fan is to immediately point to that anytime Mack is questioned lol.

Simple question: who would you rather have on the ice - 5 Mcdavid's, 5 Mackinnon's or 5 Makar's?

I would easily have Makar's first and second Mackinnon's.

what a slug eh.
shouldn't even be in TC
Not what I suggested, he's absolutely in the conversation.....still McDavid for me though. I was simply pointing out facts....you suggested MacKinnon won the Hart, Rocket and Art Ross.....of those 3, he only won the Hart.

To answer the real question....who is currently the best player in the world? McDavid for now.

The biggest difference between Mackinnon and McDavid is their vision at top speed. Mackinnon gets tunnel vision and when he gets closed off by defenders, he makes panic plays which either look stupid or gets lucky and people think he did something amazing. Meanwhile, McDavid consistently makes safe and high quality plays at top speed and is able to make quick adjustments when he gets closed off.

How many of those are empty net points?
Your question made me curious so I checked it out. For the past 4.5 seasons:

Rantanen has the most EN points with 44.
Crosby has 35 pts.
Mack, Kucherov and McD all have 30 pts.
Drai has 28 pts.

The differences are:
Kucherov's number is for 3.5 seasons only as he didn't play in the 20-21 season. His biggest season was last year.
Most of McD and Drai have been in the first 3 years. Less so in the past two.
Mack's biggest season is this season.
Crosby has been pretty even each years.

After digging into this I can tell you guys it is pretty useless to argue about EN points as all top players score about the same amount as an average per year except Mikko. Except for Crosby and Mikko they pretty well all alternate who score more in a specific year. Obviously this yearly stat can be affected by things like number of minutes per game while the net is empty, number of games a player had the opportunity, etc. so it is hard to say which players benefit the most (except Mikko) from EN pts. Percentage of EN pts vs total points would need to be calculated in relation to opportunities, etc. That is too much work for me.
