I'm tired of this numbering 20 games thing to minimize Guentzel's utility and potential of his trade return.
Contenders pay big money for great to elite players to stock up for their postseason run, even if it ends up only being 4 games.
You may be tired of it, but it's a super important consideration.
This trade was not the same as dealing Jake at a good cap hit with term locked in at prime ages.
This trade entailed either re-signing him to massive AAV until he's 38, or letting him walk for nothing. Both those things affect value.
Stop this madness of "Carolina ended up with nothing!" No they didnt, they threw the kitchen sink at it, and that was 100% the right decision for them. Just as we did with Hossa.
If the Pens were in the same position I'd be pissed if we didn't do the same.
Where did I say this today?
Nowhere.
But yeah, I wouldn't make that trade in the Canes position unless him re-signing was guaranteed. They gave up a lot.
Also, you're totally insane if you think Brunicke will ever come to even half of Jake Guentzel's value as a player
It's great that we have more than 1 prospect in our pool for once but don't compare these two players.
No one knows this, but I wouldn't be so quick to write him off. He looked very strong in camp. I see no reason he can't become a top-4 D regular in the future.
He's been strong in Juniors this year and would have played for team Canada if he was healthy.
Just because we haven't had high end prospects in a long time doesn't mean that will never change.
I'm not comparing them anyway... It's apples and oranges. Jake's full value didn't apply in this trade, for the reasons I mentioned. So even if we got nothing else in return, I'd be fine with Brunicke likely becoming a good player for Pittsburgh for many years in exchange for 20 games of Guentzel.
I would also say it's statistically unlikely that Carolina's late 1st would become better than Brunicke. He is very much looking like a 1st rounder caliber player. Late 1sts fail to become top-sixers, top 4-D or starting goalies all the time.
The way people talk about this trade...it's like they think the Pens missed out on guaranteed quality. Ridiculous.
