Oh it matters. Maybe it doesn't matter to swaths of our fanbase who are still in "Cup or bust" mindset but it matters to the players, the organization and their bottom line. Plus wallowing around in this purgatory where you miss but don't bomb enough for a great pick sucks. I'd way rather they at least make the dance while Sid is around.

Cup or bust mindset only applies when you have a strong chance to win it all, which the Pens won't have for like 15 years at this rate.
I'm more of a "progress towards Cup or bust" kinda guy atm.

All of their recent 1st rounders suck. Bourgault has 17 points in 51 games in the AHL this year. Schaefer (who was traded last year in the Ekholm deal) has 14 points in 47 games in the AHL this year. Holloway has 4 points in 31 games in the NHL. Broberg turns 23 shortly after the season yet he's still not good enough to cut it in the NHL.

Sure, but what's the alternative? Nobody's gonna give you a younger, outright replacement for Jake. This team can't hang on to him because letting him walk for nothing or re-signing him are terrible options.

You just gotta hope the guys Dubas lands are either impact players who fit the team's long term goals or they do well enough to flip them for more assets when the full on rebuild begins. /shrug

There is no alternative. It's the right thing to do. The Pens just better hit on the assets they get, or it's gonna be a loooong rebuild.
