Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

It is vital that we keep our first. We are going to need another Poulin, Kapanen, Bennett, Esposito, Pouliot, Morrow, type player in 4-5 years when they are ready to play in the NHL
We'll be drafting much higher in ensuing years, so hopefully we don't soil duh bed with the can't miss draft picks.

ok who are we getting? Kadri is priced out of our range. Trocheck’s price is rising every day for those teams that miss out on Kadri, not to mention he’s worse than Geno and will be for a couple more years. Do we have the pieces to trade for a player like Miller? We don’t want to be giving up our first round picks anymore So doubtful…The answer is we need time to draft and develop younger players, that or get a top three pick lol….unfortunately our best option is to return Geno whether you like that or not. If you want to reduce the age of our centers, let’s get rid of a worse player than Geno before his NMC kicks in on July 13. Carter was the ridiculous re-signing, not Malkin…
Domi+Marchment for me, if Trocheck's ask is ridiculous.
Miller works too, if they relieve us of Marino's contract.

Getting a guy who followed Kapanen's path for Toronto here on our next 1st would be genuinely great.

If you don't sign Malkin, you sign Trocheck for likely below market value from what he'd get as a UFA. I honestly feel like people are overestimating how much he'd get as a UFA, I think he'll fall much closer to the Phillip Danault price range ($5.5 million AAV) than the Kevin Hayes price range ($7 million AAV).

I think the best comparable for him is Brock Nelson, who got a 6 year, $6 million AAV deal in 2019 after having a season of 53 points in 82 games. That's my expectation for what Trocheck would go for in UFA, and I think the Penguins can get him at a bit of a discount because he's from Pittsburgh.

Domi is awful, pass.
Not really. 314 points in 501 games.
51 points per 82 games played. He hasn't gotten PP1 time much recently either.

That's not far off Kadri's production, although Kadri scores a much better ratio of goals admittedly.

Still, I think collectively Domi+Marchment could replace Malkin. It squeezes someone bad on the 4th line out of the lineup too.
Marchment had amazing defensive numbers, combined with staggering 5v5 production.

We'd have a very formidable top 6.

Domi is an expensive bottom six [edit: slight correction -- middle six] left wing that would bring elements that the Pens are lacking.

That said, there's no room for him on this roster or in this cap situation.

Look at Domi's good seasons. All happened when he was on bad teams getting all the prime offensive ice time.

He is crap. Cannot control his emotions. Bad defensively. Not someone who drives anything offensively. People bitching about Zucker, would want Domi gone by game 6. Might as well pry David Desharnais from Switzerland.

He scores 51 points per 82 games played. He should not be in the bottom 6 unless the team is ultra stacked.
And he can play Center.

Jury is still out on the whole center thing. But yes, that's what his stats say for production ...

... but as SdJ points out, his stats are skewed thanks to the butthole teams he's been on. Look at Boedker for another example.

Didn't Domi go like 50 games without a goal? Dude f***ing sucks.

18 and 25 game goal-less streaks this latest season.

Yeah I feel like Domi's the definition of a "someone has to produce" player. He can put up good numbers in an elevated role if you use him there, but if you're using Domi in an elevated role, your team very likely sucks.

As I was typing out my post, I was going to call it the "Mikkel Boedker syndrome"

Here we'd have guys go down like always, and he'd get his share of prime minutes.
It's not like Malkin's good defensively or at controlling his emotions either.

I'm proposing it because he can play Center, and will come at a reasonable cap hit.
And like I said, he wouldn't be meant to replace Malkin by himself. If you get him in tandem with a high value winger like Marchment, you may have a 2nd line of Marchment-Domi-Rakell. Those are 2 really solid defensive wingers who would help him. I'd feel good about our top 6 come October.

I thought Domi was hyped up as some sort of an agitator like his Dad, but he is pretty vanilla and boring. No thanks

people love to say hometown discount but the reality is we have no idea if he wants to play here over playing some place that would offer him more money or term…I think he’d take $5.5M it sounds like but on a 7 year contract…I think he’s getting 7 years on the market and maybe as high as 7x$6M…Hex sounds like he’s being stringent on term, as he should be…I don’t want to sign someone for that long unless he’s an elite talent….Trocheck isn’t worth that term…for that reason I don’t see him signing here
