Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Sid's salary was over $9 million the past few years after being over $12 million to start. It finally takes a dive down to $3 million beginning this year. So Sid has made more despite having the lower cap hit the last few years.

As for Trocheck, I don't think he's good enough offensively. Yeah, he's better defensively, but you still need to score goals and he's a 0.5 point per game player compared to Geno being a career 1 point per game player (including last year).

Trocheck is a complementary player. Malkin is a play driver.
3 primary assists 5 on 5. You are simply wrong or just avoiding the truth because you can’t accept reality.

The point per game people continue to not get it. I don’t think they watch the games or know what their watching

Geno's stats in:

2009 Cup Run: 14 G, 22 A, 36 P in 24 games played (Led team in scoring)
2016 Cup Run: 6 G, 12 A, 18 P in 23 games played (#3 in scoring - Kessel 22 P, Crosby 19 P)
2017 Cup Run: 10 G, 18 A, 28 P in 25 games played (Led team in scoring)

Do the Pens win any of those Cups without Malkin?
You don't pay guys for what they have done, only what they will do

LOL, it's some sort of Kelly prepubescent mini-me with hair, sent from our friends the Flyers.

f***in' LMAO. For real?

The Penguins currently have about $15.3M in cap space.

Moving Pettersson gives them about $19.3M. Even if you manage to sign Malkin to $6M a season, Palat to $5.75M a season and Rakell to $4.5M a season, that's still only $3M left to sign two bottom-six wingers. Not to mention including Pierre-Oliver Joseph.
Eventually they need to play young guys on cheap contracts to make this work. They have got to get rid of a dman.

Whole lotta Leskyin' going on in here as of late.

Yeah, this is the problem with the whole "we don't need to rebuild" thing, IMO. It's possible to gain some major pieces on the fly, but without a steady influx of young, undervalued talent, we simply won't have enough players under market value at some point to ice a competitive lineup.

Picking around where we are now is pretty much guaranteed to produce fairly minimal returns.

Pens x: *takes a deep breath of lemon pledge* I know I've made 18 posts today referring to Hextall as sleepy, but this 19th one is the one that makes it catch on! I just know it, otherwise I'll eat my over sized Chinese made red cap!

Seriously if you're going to make a stupid nickname for him for literally every one of your posts, at least be reasonably clever. Like Ron Sexdoll perhaps? Just saying

So true! We should take the $24M+ Malkin deserves on this contract, and give it straight to Owen Pickering.

Also your alt-account isn't fooling anyone dude.
I want Geno signed, BUT you don't just give him want his agent wants because Of what he has done

Alt Account?

Chuck Fletcher and post - 2017 JR are the two examples of “it could be worse.”

All of these people who are suggesting that we not pay Malkin for what he has done, only for what he will do, would be saying to "just pay the man" if it were Crosby in Malkin's shoes and Geno in Sid's. Just saying.

There has been a negative bias around Malkin since day 1. Media being what it is has everything to do with this. Good ol' Canadian lad can never do anything wrong, but that dastardly Russian dude? Well, he is hit or miss. That has been the narrative throughout.

The reality is, this era is the Sid and Geno show. Not just one, not just the other. There is no Stanley Cup champion Sidney Crosby without Stanley Cup champion Evgeni Malkin. Sure, Mark Messier won a Stanley Cup without Wayne Gretzky (two in fact). This team has always been built for Sid, but could never win without Geno too.

I am sick and tired of the Malkin dissing that goes on throughout the league. He is one of the very best centers to ever play the game. He is a top-25 player all time in my estimation. Is he a different sort of cat? You betcha. And that is why the masses do not see him as this all-time legend. They see him as a great player who has hung around and ridden the coattails of their own media darling.

Look, I love Sidney Crosby. From day 1. I watched him play in the QMJHL when he was 16. I knew he was going to be special, and he is special. But he has never been anymore special than Malkin. Both are equals in Penguins lore in my view. They are Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg. Only better.

If they choose not to bring him back, they will lose a Penguins fan (since 1990).

Oh, and since we are talking about legends, I am still waiting for the Jaromir Jagr jersey retirement ceremony as well.

To be fair, I don’t think the Penguins can or would retire his number until Jagr, ya know, retires from playing professional hockey.

Mario had 44 pts in 23 games and 34 pts in 15 games when we won the cups in 91 and 92. We must pay him 50 million for the next 5 years to lace them up...

Sid got his number retired in Rimouski a few years ago.

Jagr is retired from the NHL. There is no need to wait.

Mario Lemieux is not a current Unrestricted Free Agent. Nice try.

That isn't fact you know. It's hypothetical. You have no idea if they could win without Malkin. They quite possibly could have won more, less....... or the same with someone else.

Sure, it's hypothetical, but taking out the leading and third leading team scorer in two Cup runs is not easy to replace. It's pretty much the definition of "unlikely".

It's like saying "oh we won without a top pairing defenseman, so never spend on defense because someone will step up."
