For me the team had a week off and most of the players back to practice. They had time to fix their defensive issues and came out with the same problems. Jarry might have needed to stop one or more but the defense needed to not look like a bunch of muppets either.

The last 3 seasons have been very Bylsma like....great during the season, flat in the playoffs. That's where my head is at.
In this case I think having a full week off, particularly for Jarry, was detrimental to the team defense. The 12:30 start not helping either.
Isles had the same problems defensively that we did, and were lucky to win.

I expect more structure and better goaltending in game 2, from both teams. 1 day break is a lot easier than 7 when it comes to executing game plans.

What game did you watch. Those goals they scored certainly didn't look like high danger chances to me. Those goals all looked soft. If we got average NHL goaltending this game doesn't go to OT and Pens win it easily and nobody is bitching. That was a pathetic showing by Jarry. If DeSmith was healthy he would get his shot after that effort. That might of been the worst goaltending of the year. A good highschool goalie stops most of those shots.

Jarry had a weird game. He actually made some really big saves today, but he kind of ruined his own effort by letting in a bunch of really bad goals.

Tend to think Jarry was just nervous and this isn't a sign of technical issues. He's let in softies before but more a case of his immaturity/inexperience/lack of veteran focus I think. I hope. If we can insulate him a little next game he can settle in and hopefully put this behind him. Easiest way to do that is do exactly what we did in the first, quick decisions with and without the puck.

I mean, this game wasn't all bad. It's a very yinzer to just blame the goalie, but that is what happened today. It was the worst goaltending performance you can get. Jarry has a lot of those, but he does bounce back from them. Will he in the playoffs? I have my doubts, but he can. He can';t get any worse than he was today.

95% of the loss was on his shoulders. I do not care if he made any "big saves." Every goalie does, it's about the goals he lets up and all four should have been stopped.

Don’t give me that shit… those were all 4 BAD goals to give up that should have been easily stoppable pucks. Want to blame the team for something it should be for a garbage power play.

I'm just saying the Steelers and Pirates have no business being compared to the Pens as far as Pittsburgh teams go. Not in the same universe.

You aren't serious, right? Right? I mean the (Steelers) Stillers have more Super Bowls than all teams other than the one they're tied with. They'll be fine once Ben rides off into the sunset and Aaron takes the reins after sitting out a season.

The last time the Steelers were good was when the Pirates were still good, so yeah, the Penguins shouldn't be group in the same category as the other 2.

The Steelers have two Superbowl wins in the last 40 years, and not much success outside of that. No, they do not belong in the same conversation as the Penguins.

I thought you were referring to the Steelers. 3 of nine is not terribad. It's at least a competitive result. Any closer is 4 of 9 which is the best possible losing record. 2 of 14 or only 3 wins in 29 years is not so good...

...but that's just based on the numbers given

This team (and this board) is a broken record, year after year after year

This team has zero, I repeat zero guys that are even capable (let alone willing) to go anywhere near the net. Maybe Sid, and that's it. The tic tac toe, harlem globetrotters shit is great during the regular season, but it doesn't work in the playoffs. The sooner management and ownership wises up and realizes that there's more to the game than speeeeed, the better we'll all be.

Next year, instead of going after the free agent/trade du jour (Zucker, Brassard, etc), go after a few blood and guts guys that can clear the net or at least strike a little fear in opposing teams. For years our opponents, even in the playoffs, are just out for a Sunday skate. If Sullivan doesn't want those type of players, then he needs to go immediately. We literally haven't had a guy that the other team needs to worry about since Orpik and Matt Cooke. It's a shame.

And I don't think I've ever seen a goalie 'duck' when a wrist shot is coming at him. I don't know if Jarry's afraid of the puck or what, but it's embarrasing.

Too many of these playoff losses the last four years are too similar. Goaltending is a real issue. But so is focus.

Yeah it's why I would chalk this up as rust. Time will tell.

Blowing their wad early IS a coaching problem...no excuse for L1 to play 25+ minutes and Gaudreau 12 minutes....

Freddy G has to have done something to anger the old boy’s network... it makes no sense... he is defensively solid, offensively gifted and plays a smart game yet is always bottom of the barrel in ice time or demoted to the minors... scores and follows up with a strong shift then barely sees the ice

Sullivan's coaching method is "how do I get Crosby and BART out there".

My son and i noticed the same thing. The weird duck/cringe thing. WTF? I don't recall seeing this before. I hope to hell this isn't a hockey version of the Steve Blass disease. Thank God this offseason will be a buyer's market for Gs....
