I think it was a pretty big f*** up by both the Rangers and the Canucks to not chase Jake, even if he was only a rental. Those two teams were primed for deep playoff runs with a Jake addition imo.
What do you consider "deep playoff runs"?

Rangers were in the Eastern Final, and the Canucks got bounced due to goaltending.

Some Rangers fan in the comments said Drury blew it last year by not trading Kaapo and Othmann for Jake.

Can you even imagine how happy we would have been if Dubas had gotten that package?
That's a good package, but I am pretty down on Kakko's ceiling and Koivunen, Brunicke, Ponomarev is equal or (more likely) better than Othmann in value.

I don't know that Kakko is ever gonna be the star they envisioned but he is a strong two-way player with great possession numbers.

Assuming the structure of the deals were around "a roster player and a collection of prospects/picks", I think the Carolina deal still may have been preferable.
Kakko vs Bunting is going to be tough. I don't think either has the edge there in terms of play but Kakko may get a slight bump due to age. I don't think Kakko does what Bunting did last year after the TDL. This year? Who knows. History suggests Bunting is the better player just via stats alone.

While I am high on Othmann, we have to be realistic about that as well. Statistically, he's about where Koivunen is in the AHL. That is based on Othmann's year last year in the AHL and Koivunen's project year this year in the AHL. Age and size are about the same. I think Othmann is a much better skater, and the overall hype/potential is likely higher, but it would be short-sighted not to suggest that Koivunen is closing the gap. Then you add Ponomarov on top of that with a 2nd, I wouldn't have trouble seeing the rationalization of going with Carolina. That said, this is all based on the assumption the deal would have only been Kakko+Othmann. If they add a 2nd and another prospect like Sykora, then you're in the same ballpark.

Given the objective of restocking the prospect pool, Othmann vs Koivunen, Pono, Cruz, and Brunicke, it's an easy decision. Now if it was Gabe Perreault, I may have done him straight up for Jake, lol. But then again, I was really high on Perreault that draft year.

Russia can still put together a good team. They have a couple guys in the KHL that could probably fill som center gaps.

Sucks they aren't a part of the 4 nations debacle. A team Russia and a Team Europe (everyone not Swed or Finn) would have been nice to add. Lots of really good players missing from that tournament.

It's dumb as hell that Russia can't play. The Ukraine situation is bad of course but the USA has been engaging in war crimes of its own for years and nobody is banning us from the tournament.

If Russia is banned for its crimes then we should be banned for ours. Canada gets involved with some of that shit sometimes too. Maybe Sweden and Finland can have the two nations tournament. Their hands are relatively clean in comparison.

Sweden sells a shit ton of weapons to the US for their proxy wars. If every national team was totally identifiable with the government of said country we should just shut everything down.

The US hasn’t tried to annex a sovereign country in over a 100 years.

Not sure why we’re talking politics on a hockey board.

Yea it only bombed countries that weren't even close to it, so much better.

Because Russia is being banned from a tournament for bogus political reasons.

I was purposefully vague in my post about what things the US has done which I consider war crimes because I don't want to get into a huge political bru ha ha on here.

My only point is that the US absolutely has done some heinous shit and continues to do so to this day so to punish Russia for that with international tournaments but not the US is hypocritical.

Either let them all play or ban them all.

Don't tell that to the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.

I'd rather just be able to separate hockey and politics but it's not like sporting event participation hasn't been used as political leverage in the past.

Because we have individuals here who like drama and can't stay on the intended topic due to character frailties.

Afghanistan housed UBL at the time of the invasion and wouldn’t give him up, so in my mind that was justified. The talboan could've given him up and avoided the entire mess. Iraq seemed like the son exacting revenge for his father and also a bunch of geo-politics.

At the end of the day, Saudi Arabia was the country that should’ve paid the heaviest price.

I'll be honest. If we had a guarantee of trading what would be a mid 1st rounder to get one more playoffs with this core, I do it 100%.
I think most of us just want him to pass Jags and Glen Anderson in all-time playoff points. Anderson is a f***ing joke there btw. He was a good player in his own right but man, he benefitted greatly from his line-mates 99 and 17.

We (at least the wider "west") make the rules about the tournament

Russia doesn't

I mean, they can create a stupid four country dumbass tournament that shouldn't exist, too
You know you're going to watch.
