With all my (earned) respect for you and your avatar, can we not agree that Pens being a team spending to the cap in a cap-league makes Billy Bean references off if not absurd?

Nevermind that the explanation of the problem is otherwise meaningful, I’d say the issue is exactly that we’ve sucked at being Moneyballers, in the sense that we haven’t identified pieces bringing the needed elements on the cheap. PP net front, speed on the PK, complimentary scoring, projectable D-men with size etc. etc.

Of course there are short term examples like Erod and lucking into Gaudreau as a wsiver get and subsequent AHL call-up, but basically the bottom 6 for the first four games was a nice illustration of someone not getting Moneyball, because there was so little of the “more value for less” mindset there.

That's why I was annoyed they blew their wad in the first days of FA. Like what this bottom 6 is bringing now, you probably could have gotten the same production/output with 10% savings.

I hope Z plays the middle and Acciari can go to the wing and kill people on the forecheck
This is what I hope for as well.

I do like Zahornas possession / attempts at possession in the offensive zone. Curious if Sully will though.

Cant wait for Zohorna to come up and do nothing. So half the fanbase will say hes useless and to call up the next scrub and the other half to blame Sully.

I'm just happy we are trying stuff and seeing who works. Until we have a 13th Forward slot we have limited spots to try forwards at.

Like what this bottom 6 is bringing now
They've only conceded once in 4 games at even-strength.
I want more scoring and high danger chance generation too, but I don't think we can say they're failing defensively at least.

----

How accepting they were of shit performance last year was the most deflating thing for me. So I'm glad to see short leashes and experimentation again. That's what I was hoping for from Dubas.

While I agree to an extent and think it would be funny, i want him to help us.

Truth is though we need to temper expectations. He's not a middle 6 or top 6 talent. The expectation should a smidgen above the current performance of DOC.

Honestly I’m a bit surprised Harkins cleared because Winnipeg could have claimed him and just sent him back to their AHL team if no one else claimed him. Guess they didn’t want to take the risk of them claiming him but not being able to assign him to the AHL due to another claim from a lower priority team.

That definitely helps WBS that he’s down there though. He’s another AHL veteran but Zohorna coming up and him going down keeps their AHL veteran numbers the same.

The Jets didnt want him back. They were done with him as a prospect.

I don't think Bowness thinks highly of Harkins, so that's likely why he wasn't claimed.

Winnipeg has 22 healthy skaters and $2 million in cap space. They could've easily added him back even if another team put in a claim.

I think they've just decided to move on.

Hoping now Dubas can work out another Freidman for Rathbone swap with Harkins. Just as another possible lottery ticket. I have little interest in seeing him back in the NHL, especially with DOC here but I'd be interested in someone else as a maybe. I'm sure there's an AHL team that would be interested in his productivity.

I like that POJ is the one sitting when Ruh had the absolutely abysmal night the other day.

Not that POJ is playing well either but that's just a classic Sully move.
When he likes crappy players they don't have to be held accountable. They can cost the team games non stop.

Honestly I’m more annoyed at Shea going in for POJ over Ludvig than I am for Ruhwedel to be playing over POJ. POJ has been really bad to start the year, he doesn’t fit his role whatsoever.

Best case scenario at this point is trading him for a top-9 winger and Ludvig working out as a bottom pair D in his spot. If Smith can rebound, I think Ludvig-Smith could work as a bottom pair.

One thing that's always bothered me about Sullivan, even as a supporter, is that he is less likely to bench someone because of physical failures than mental ones.

Ruhwedel stunk against Detroit, but it was largely because he simply couldn't keep up. He was skated around, out-muscled, just physically beaten.

POJ is a lot more agile, so he doesn't make as many physical mistakes. But he still makes mental ones. And it seems like the mental mistakes bother Sullivan a lot more than simply getting beat.

Personally, physical and mental mistakes should be treated equally. If you can't keep up in this game, maybe you shouldn't be playing.

The small glimmer of hope remaining in my grey mashed potato brain is that it's a LD-RD thing, with more LD available.

Reality tells me that, even though POJ's sucked, Ruhwedel doesn't have another gear and POJ does. Dumb.

Minor improvements over 82 games leads to a few more points in the standings. Last year that woulda been the difference.
This team's not good enough to pass on any possible improvement.
Getting top line minutes in the preseason probably skewed expectations around here.

Yeah. Him playing with O'Connor and Eller could bring some elements of what they had in the preseason, but will they get more than 4th line minutes on the 3rd line to show anything worthwhile?

Temper expectations is really key. There's really nothing to suggest a 3rd line will get 15 to 17 minutes to suggest they trust the line "in all" situations.

A 26 year old waiver claim with like 150 games of NHL experience and most likely a AHL lifer is crisis averted?

Yeah I don’t get this. Switching out AHL fodder isn’t going to solve the 3rd lines issues.
