From DK’s Friday Insider: he’s quoting Eller about why the third line hasnt got it going yet, and what do you know, his answer translates essentially into “the coach wants us to play this way first” lol…just what we suspected…

“I asked yesterday why his line's still seeing so many one-and-done zone entries -- puck goes in, puck comes right back out -- and all he had in response was this hockey thesis: “Yeah, so I think right now we’re kind of playing a really low-risk game where we’re putting pucks north all the time. We’re getting out of our zone. We’re getting it deep. We’re not turning pucks over at the blue line. We’re not trying to do too much. But at the same time, the next step right now is getting the forecheck to be more effective, which means we have to force turnovers off getting the puck deep and getting on the forecheck. That’s the part of the game that’s lacking a little bit now, and that’s what’s stopping us from getting extended zone time. So, the first step is, when we get it in deep, which we are most of the time, we have to get it back. And now, we’ve got to do better of working three together, breaking up plays with sticks, getting bodies, keeping the puck alive. Right now, that’s what’s stopping us from getting more offense, I think. So, that’s the first step. Once we do that, then we can talk about, ‘How do we cycle? How do we find the open lanes? How do we find the open ice?’ We’ve got to get the puck right now and keep it alive. Right now, we’re not spending a ton of time in our zone. We’re playing responsible. We’re not giving up a lot, you know, but we’re not generating as much as we’re capable of. I think that’s where it starts for me."

ZOHORNA UP NEXT

Radim Zohorna has a stall in the locker room. Obviously, he didn’t before. Looks like he’ll be the call up.
Great. Let's insert a different piece without changing the tactics at all. There will be so much difference on the ice.

Dubas: "Just going down the deck chair bet list..."

Otherwise....

Harkins must have high risked himself back to the A unless someone picks/has picked him up. Could tell the dude was radically free lancing against the Wings.
He probably realized this system sucked and he’d rather go elsewhere because we’re not going to the SCF with this coach…any other coach would want to see him actually do something on the ice so he took it upon himself to make something happen lol

I feel like the lack of production in the bottom-6 is both their lack of skill and Sullivan's system being horrendous for non-skilled players. The bottom-6 is full of pretty proven 10+ scorers, which isn't a crazy amount but it's solid bottom-6 goal production. This team should still be able to chip in a few goals in the bottom-6, the reason they can't is because this team is allergic to going to the dirty areas.

The bottom-6 needs to play a crash the net, grit grinder type of style to get goals. Does anyone think they're playing that way? Of course not.

The problem is Sully will always take a 3rd liner that plays the game safe instead of a guy who will take chances to create.

Truth be told he looked like AHL material. I guess giving the guy 4 games was worth the chance.

I thought they tried Nieto there?
Maybe that was to throw off any Blues scouts.

Partially but it's more that the kind of bottom-6 guy he wants is incompatible with his offensive system. They need guys who can survive ultra heavy defensive assignments in the bottom-6 but the offensive system is too skill-based for those kind of guys to have success there.

I honestly don't even know what you can do about that. You can give the top-6 more difficult/defensive minutes and run with more skill in your bottom-6, but your top-6 is going to have some production drop and it's no guarantee that the bottom-6 will be able to make up for it.

I like colin white on the 4th line. Carter is such a plug but that contract is a killer. Acciari on the third line with DOC and Ellers can be a good third line. At least on paper. Give third line more minutes with the potential to chip in the scoring and live with a 4rh line that has a player that you're stuck with. Now as to the 3rd pairing, it just is not good enough. I proposed trading POJ if the recent add Ludwig can play. Ruhwedel just has not been good for now 2 years. But Pens have zip as to RD RH shot. Thus I did propose now with Dubas there trading for Bertuzzo and the money works and he does bring some veteran presence and can bang as well.

Ya but you need a bottom 6 that has the ability to produce some. You can’t just be ok with losing if the top 6 has an off night,

That’s my biggest gripe with Sullivans system

Let's hope Radim does well. Haters gonna hate.

This guy scored very well here. His defense was middling. I don't really get why he's gone.
I'd sign him for minimum and take someone useless out of the lineup.

He was more offensive minded and they don’t want that in the bottom 6 at all.
