Maybe I've become some wild optimist all of the sudden but I'll take an early 2nd for two years of Hayes and call it a victory for this lame, dysfunctional team. Yeah, victory's a victory, small as it may be. They've committed to non-commitment in any direction until Lord Sid retires, so even pretty minimal shit like this is good for this team. If the goal is "rebuild while making a token effort at being competitive" this move checks both of those boxes.

Hayes isn't good but he's way the f better than Jeff Carter (not a high bar to clear, I know). The 2nd rounder helps for the future.

If we're going to complain about this move then we're gonna just sit here and admit that we're gonna complain about everything Dubas does lol. I think he's been shit so far outside of a handful of moves but this move is one we can add to the "good" pile. That pile is pretty f-ing small though with just this move and EK being in it lol.
