Speculation: Penguins off day talk thread: Yes, Sully is still the coach

When Crosby couldn’t play against the Capitals in Game 4 of the classic 2016 playoff series against Washington because of a concussion, Hörnqvist was there to score on a breakaway to jump-start what had been a staggered Penguins team.

Yohe can't even get cup memories correct.
That was 2017, pretty sure. If you're talking about the Niskanen cheapshot.

Honestly, I would think about helping out Malkin and Crosby by doing what the Oilers do and play them together.

Atleast that's fun to see. Malkin - Crosby - Rust would work.

No idea what Sully will do, but here's what I'd go for:

Guentzel-Crosby-Puustinen
Smith-Malkin-Hinostroza
DOC-Eller-Zohorna
Johnstone-Gruden-Harkins
Carter

Get back to the speed game. Carter has been OK, I guess, since he got back in the lineup. But this allows them to play a bit faster.

I'm onboard the "team needs a new coach" bandwagon at this point, so who out there would be both available and interesting as a replacement? I can't see JD Forrest as a viable replacement, and at this point. If I'm going with this fantasy land, they're cleaning house at the NHL level, at least, so who's out there?

I mean, I can think of Boudreau or Gallant being available, and maybe you go with one of them on an interim basis for the rest of the season, but I'd be curious as to who might be out there in the minor or junior leagues that might be interesting at this point. I'd rather not get another re-tread.

I will make one exception on the re-treads - I think I'd be happy to bring back Therrien just for the sheer entertainment factor. I mean, the team wouldn't necessarily get any better, but the post-game pressers would become must-see TV! :sarcasm:
Boudreau or Woodcraft.
Boudreau is an offensive coach who can improve morale. That seems exactly like what the Pens need right now. He's one of the best regular season coaches.

Woodcraft got a lot out of those Oilers until the start this year. He's young too. Hungry.

I don't mind re-treads if they're good.
Just fire the assistants and get 2 guys who are new to the NHL, if you want fresh blood.

My ideal lineup as well. That L3 must get reunited.

He’s only trying shit because his job is on the line…we got to this point because he wasn’t making the right adjustments or trying shit earlier
What line combination or pairing hasn’t he tried that you would want to see?

Even the Rust with Geno crowd (which I don’t agree with) got their wish for like 1 period before injury.

Not saying Sully is deserving of still being the head coach, but the complaints about him being too rigid are unfounded this year.

Jay Woodcroft might be interesting. I don't know how "great" he actually is, but the one thing he was good at was the PP.

Rust was moved for one period after game 20+…L2 fell off a cliff Game 10 or so….Rust was good on L2 for 30 min but i guess that’s it and then he’s moved back…nothing settles in for a few games, it’s more like 30 min lol…scheme change to play against Colorado, great and successful…two games later we’re back to playing an aggressive forecheck and pinching game…the players all seem confused how to play…make changes w a purpose, not just to throw shit against the wall bc you don’t know what to do lol

Yup. Then there's the radical new PP formations that we got...for one game...

I think I'd play Puustinen with Geno because of how unwilling to change his game/style Sid is. There's gonna be an adjustment period for Puustinen to get up to speed and sorta learn how to get into spots to use his shot and Geno seems more like the guy to work with that than Sid. I don't know who I'd play with them on L2 though, cuz I'd move Smith up with Sid and Jake. DOC? Zoho? Pretty bone dry as far as depth guys being able to move up imo.

Specifically, what line combination hasn’t he tried?

Like it or not GCR is the best line we have, and one of the best in the league at even strength. I don’t fault Sully for not wanting to break up basically the only working component of this team.

That's probably best. I think with Malkin you at least have some opportunity to play your game. If you want to play with Sid, you need your skills and IQ to be up to par while completely turning over your hockey livelihood to the ebbs and flows of Sidney Crosby. Some guys are good with that, others not.

My complaints lie solely with the PP involvment. It's ultimately on Sully to either take charge of the setup and/or personnel

He's failed miserably.

It's nice that they called these guys up but I'm not expecting much from any of them. I hope they prove me wrong.

And I hope Sully actually puts them in positions where they have a chance to succeed but I bet they get 8 minutes of ice time

Clearly the answer is not “give players the you acquire the right setup to succeed” and is “no player ever improves”.

It's wild all the great things Mike Sullivan has done the last five years and the team just can't do anything despite it.

I for one can't not wait until Sullivan is unburdened with wishy washy individual stars like Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Letang, etc and can put together a team that knows how to play and compete as a team.

Plus as soon as he gets his hands on some real prospects we will definitely see his coaching prowess further exemplified. It's our scouts fault that we've gotten about 10 games out of drafted prospects not the coach.

Man, good thing we got the “best analytics and detail guy” in the NHL as our not-GM for 7 years then! Hopefully he learns how to add and subtract numbers by year 3.

Also, how’s the GM search coming, pencil dick?
