Ron Hextall doesn't look that far outside his sphere. I don't know how many players he's acquired with Pittsburgh off-hand, I know it's not many, but 3 of them are guys he was familiar with, and one of them was off waivers.

I don't know that trading Pettersson for Hagg is really "dumping" Pettersson. It's trading from a position of strength (LHD puck movers) for a position of weakness (physical defenseman).

The Penguins would likely add a bit but I think it wouldn't be anything major. Maybe like Pettersson and a 3rd/4th for Hagg.
