Also lol Rutta... who cares. I'm not even sure I'm spelling his name right he was so irrelevant last year. I barely noticed he was on the team outside of like ten games, maybe.

But yeah obviously that means our old buddy Chad will be a fixture. But I can cope when your top four looks like THAT.
I like the idea of Rutta and I’m sure he was fine overall, but literally the only play I can remember from him was getting absolutely trucked by Ovechkin, immediately getting a retaliation penalty, and then missing a few games from the hit.

I'm really failing to see an issue with this outside of the low amount of retention that we got on EK.

Then again, we shed big time salary in Granlund/Petry (thank god he's gone).

That'd be great. Hope we're looking along those lines. Although not sure about the cap space. I thought we were right up against it.
We're 79K over with an active Guentzel. That gets resolved for example by demoting Pitlick (1.1M) and calling up someone that's 775K.
At that point it really becomes about however much you wanna use of Jake's LTIR while he's out. Whatever you use, you'll have to clear when he comes back.

If I remember right, it was reported that both Sid and Tanger had talked to Karlsson about coming here. Got to think to think that included conversations about his role here and how they were excited to have him taking a big offensive role, right?
What Karlsson didn't know was Letang had his fingers crossed the entire conversation.

They don't have cap space to sign anyone else.....unless the Carter LTIRetiring thing is real, but as far as I know, that's nothing but wishful thinking.

Yeah it wasn't like he was offensively bad or anything. Just kinda... there. And for nearly 3M against the cap.

They could still sign a bunch of guys to <1.15m contracts to battle it out in the bottom-6 and then waive the losers when Guentzel is back

We still need to add a top six forward. With Jake on LTIR we should have a decent amount of cap. We need to hedge our bets here. But Dubas did very well and extracted great value.

Are we sure the Guentzel LTIR wasn't posturing for this move?

Seems an awful long time for his injury.

Hey guys! Come in peace. I think this trade is great for everyone - you guys get what you want and have another chance at the cup, we got rid of a massive contract for a tiny amount of retainment and a 1st — something we genuinely couldn’t have even imagined last summer.

Question for ya’ll: what’s the word now on the old dudes we got? I know they’re all cap dumps but just curious what level they’re playing at now — are Granlund/Hoffman third line players? 4th line? How bad ARE they? Is Rutta still pretty good? I think he’s actually a nice teacher for some of our young defensemen, so I sorta like getting him back.

Thanks!

P.S. as a kid I loved Jagr (I had long hair and everyone called me Jagr when I played) and always picked the Penguins when I played the NHL games.. before I became a big Sharks fan of course. Anyway, still have a soft spot for your team and hope Karlsson can get a cup there.

So you've got to ask Montreal about Hoffman

And truth told, you're better off asking Nashville about Granlund. We had him for 20 games in a very weird situation. My take would be that his hands and brain looked there, but his legs looked a bit cooked. That makes it pretty difficult for him to be a top six forward, but I could see him being useful somewhere in the middle six and on the power play on a team that can overlook the fact they're not getting 5m out of him.

Rutta was decent. Adequate to mediocre puck handler, adequate physicality, smart enough. Would have been happy to keep him.

I think with Jake on IR to start the season, even Sully/Reirden will have no choice but to run 2D-3F (65-58-87-71-67?) every powerplay for about 1:30 of the 2:00. I'm not sure when the switch flipped but we don't really have a 2nd powerplay unit anymore lol. Like others have said, Sid, Geno, and Letang run that shit and you aren't taking the reigning Norris Trophy winner off the ice for Bryan Rust.

Shows how out of the loop I am. I didn't even know Guentzel was injured until I read this thread about the Karlsson trade.

Rutta is fine, wouldn't say he's too much of a 'cap dump'

More so a fairly paid and reliable (when healthy) 5/6 with a winning pedigree that should help your younger guys develop

Granlund was terrible in a small sample size where he wasn't really put in a position to succeed, no idea how he'll look with more opportunity. Definitely think he should be a W and not C, and play with shooters, he loves to defer

Rutta is a third pairing guy. Good size and not bad or anything. Has some experience playing with a skilled partner. He won't wow you but he largely won't hurt you, either.

Granlund is... a bit more complicated. He did shockingly well on the third line as far as simply being reliable last year. Problem was he produced nothing in that role and wasn't really capable of being a catalyst on that line. At this stage he is largely going to be a powerplay merchant and have to be fed top six minutes with other good players if you want to extract much in the way of points out of him. I think he COULD be helpful for you guys, though. His biggest sin here was simply being like 3M too expensive and not having any logical place in the lineup.

Hope that helps and thanks for being a bro unlike much of the rest of the sourness I've seen today and leading up to this.

So, as long as Jakes out we can spend that money. Maybe we can ''Kucherov'' him.

Bitter ex syndrome.

Dubas could somehow land McDavid and Draisaitl at 50% retention for Carter and Rust and Toronto fans would somehow make it sound like a horrible Dubas deal.
This was a solid trade made by Dubas. Toronto fans like me had some problems with the way he spent money, but he got way too much negative backlash when the man above him (Team President Shanahan), should get more of the blame for his almost decade of mediocrity in Toronto.

The internet is a toxic horrible place where civil discussion goes to die, so no problem.

Thanks for this! Yeah, I’m wondering if we can pump Granlund’s value for a trade at the deadline.

Did Hoffman not play at all then? Is he broken?
