Like we were supposed to trade Eller and Reilly Smith last deadline? Nah, we acquired these players because they are supposed to help replace the departed players because we are never going to rebuild with Sullivan coaching this team.

Like every move Dubas makes, it is never a slam dunk victory. I like the prospect (Fernstrom sounds like a very young sniper, I think he is a better prospect than Lucius) and the first-rounder will obviously help for sure. BUT, make no mistake we just took on two more salary dumps. Desharnais will likely help because that third-pairing RD was a massive issue for us this season. Heinen? Whatever. Dubas is just picking up guys who know Sullivan's system because he is petrified to acquire young NHLers or AHL prospects with the fear they end up buried in the AHL like the others.

Somehow, we keep managing to get OLDER after every trade. This is what I hate. Heinen will clearly block McGroarty and Koivunen because I had one of those guys penciled in to replace O'Connor. Now that roster spot is gone. Desharnais to a lesser degree will block Brunicke from potentially making the roster next year. But maybe that is for the best.

Now we have five assets to move out (if we can get anything for them), but also five players who have bad contracts that are immovable:

Grz; Ned; Beauvillier; Glass; Bunting (I would try to get what I can from each).

Jarry; Graves; Hayes; Desharnais; Heinen (no value at all, we are stuck with each until the end of their deals).

I wanted to keep Bunting, maybe, but not now. We NEED to see what McGroarty and Koivunen can do at the NHL level before they start to get bypassed by the next group of forward prospects. And there needs to be at least one roster spot available for one of them to earn next training camp. Or else this is a total waste of time.

I don't hate the trade, but it is far from a slam dunk. Once again, the losers after this trade are our prospects. Yay.

Which is why you are just as happy if not more happy if it gets pushed a year to 2026.
 
I guess it depends on the kind of person you are. If you want to be guaranteed to get a solid prospect, you want the Rangers to finish with the 14th this year. There's always talent at that point, even in drafts that are considered bad.

If you're a gambler, you definitely want the pick to push to 2026. A snowball's chance in hell at McKenna is better than 100% chance at whoever you get at 14 in 2025.

Worst Case Ontario: Rangers finish 13th this year but get their shit together and we get an end-of-round pick next year. Which may be reason to just hope for 14th this year. In this scenario, I wonder if the pick just because trade fodder.

I lean towards gambling bc no real “bad” outcome here.

Expected 2nd + Fernstrom in value for Petts, and a 3rd/4th for OC so even if it ends up being pick 32 I’m fine with it.

Prediction is we end up drafting this year in the 15-25 range though.

The only slight concern I have is that Heinen will be taking up a roster spot I want to see go to a young player, namely the 3rd line scorer role that Sullivan usually wants on his 3rd line. That's really about my only issue with the deal.

At the same time, if you can't beat out Danton Heinen for a spot, you're not a very good player.

It's a good trade absolutely. BUT everyone saying they're fine with the team losing and sucking...we'll see next season when the team is bottom of the league and absolute garbage...
 
Still having the retention spot is a big deal too, this means moving Karlsson, Rakell, or Bunting is a deadline possibility as opposed to summer moves. Then regaining the other 2 retention spots in the summer gives a lot of flexibility to move bad contracts, especially with the cap going up so much over the next 3 years.

This is a good point and makes me think we may see another high profile guy moved. None of the other rentals seem like guys you use a retention slot on, but someone like Bunting would make sense for that.

I think we both were of the mindset that Pettersson was going to have some retention when he was traded. So with that not happening, it opens a lot more opportunities up to the deadline.

Why would I be mad if that was the outcome? We know we suck and will suck. If Sid finally decides to move on, Pens can get a great return and then immediately suck real bad and get more lottery tickets. Seems like you just enjoy being mad lately. Dubas has been a bunch of meh just like Hextall was and later stage JR.

I think the consensus is ok with that since next years draft is better? 🤷
 
Dubas will move Heinen and the RD for picks as the cap is much higher going forward. Dubas has some vets to move but they can be moved. Hayes, Heinen and the RD will be elsewhere for low picks. For now they are roster adds to allow the young players in WB to continue developing. But lots of young players next year as Dubas begins the rebuild at the NHL level. The question is will Sullivan be here or a new coach who knows his role in coaching the young players.
