It doesn't matter Johnny. You said it in your post, the Kings won a SC. They weren't winning in 2012 with Stoll or Schenn at 2nd line center. It's unfortunate that Richards is turning into Scott Gomez before our eyes, but the Kings still came out good in that trade because they, as you said "won 1 Stanley Cup", which is 1 more than a lot of us thought we would ever see.

Give credit to Homer in Philly though, that was an amazing trade by the Flyers.

Wow. I was tossed off the boards during the Cup run year because I was only one of two posters doing any sort of Richards' trade bashing. Now the entire board is on it.

I knew this would happen. We traded Schenn and Simmons for 1 Stanley Cup...and that's it. Now we are stuck with 5-6 years of a old, slow, not physical Richards' who makes almost 6 million.

In turn, we gave up a younger version of Richards in Schenn, who makes a lot less and Simmonds, who has emerged as an elite power forward in the NHL...and makes less than Richards.

I love Simmonds. LOVE the guy.

Kings won the Cup in my lifetime. I don't give a **** about the trade at present because they won the Cup.

The Kings are not stuck with Richards unless they want to be stuck with him. Trading for an immediate Cup and a trip to the WCF is pretty sweet. If the Kings can move him for an asset plus cap space for another asset, then all the better.

It depends on the cost. But Stastny is a much better answer at 2nd line center if the Kings wanted to add a center.

But with the way the roster is set-up I still think the best bet is going with Carter at C and having Toffoli move into his slot on the RW. Use the money saved on MR to upgrade the D and or the LW.

I agree with the bolded (albiet I might take issue with the word "much," as I've never been a particular fan of Stastny's game, and I've seen him live at every game he's played at Staples). I just really forsee some serious griping in 2/3 years with Stastny's then-contract handicapping the roster flexibility.

Your third sentence kinda' dovetails into my main point: I'm not sure that there's a really good open-market solution to the "Richards' problem" (if Carter can find enough success as the #2 center, then using those saved-resources to upgrade the D looks great to my eyes)...

I think everyone here would love Schenn/Simmonds right about now but if we go back in time we're in 2012 complaining that Schenn is in over his head as a 2C and that we're still sorely lacking a top-line scoring winger. Sure hindsight is 20/20 but if you were Richards bashing in 2012 yes, you were off your rocker.

I know CNS has implied the Kings are not high on Vey, but Dean sure seemed positive about him during interviews regarding the Gaborik trade. Is the guy a legit 2C eventually? Maybe not, but he has the offensive skill to play in the NHL and, aside from whatever intangibles Richards brings to the team, he can give you the same production for a fraction of the cost.

I think that a larger part of the solution to the "Richards Problem" is the cap space it would provide to improve another area of the team since we aren't really talking about replacing a 2nd line center here. I think a 1-2 punch of Kopitar and Carter down the middle would work out nicely if you could put some more mobility on the blueline.

I don't miss Schenn at all. Only Simmonds. And I'll take a Cup over those two guys every single time. Jesus, some of you guys need to chill.

It was one guy who said it, and everyone else has disagreed with him, even those of us in the "He Man Richards Haters Club" admit it was a good trade for the Kings.

Everyone knew long term the Flyers would come out way ahead, I just thought the Kings would get atleast 4-5 good years from Richards rather than a season and a half.

But like I said, no way do we win with Schenn or Stoll at 2C in 2012.

Schenn and Simmonds production would suffer here. this is not run and gun style of Flayers. No defence in east playoff games (west has been marginally better). Kings have won the Cup and that is all that matters.

so cheer up. It has only been one game.

:biglaugh:

You're all assuming one Dean Lombardi has the emotional capacity to actually part with a core guy like Richards.

Spoiler: he doesn't.

I always worried about Richards' health with his style of play, shows how worn down he's become. I still root for the guy though...

That's it? Damn, that sucks. It's a shame, the Kings have such a rich winning history, they really didn't need to get that 1 Cup. What was the point of the whole thing anyway? Look at how many times the Kings have been to the 3rd round of the playoffs prior to the last 2 years.

I have no idea if you're being serious or if you're looking for attention, but how anyone could complain about a Cup is just, I don't even know what. All they got was one stinkin', low down, good for nothing, snake in the grass, ne'er-do-wellin', Stanley Cup. Pitiful. Woeful. Game 6 against NJ makes me sick.

Oh, I agree, and that's the larger point: IMHO the only viable solution (with the provisio that Richards will in-fact continue on his current trajectory) here is internal, with the saved-money being used "around the edges" instead of for a direct replacement.

In some ways, this reminds me of the Visnovsky situation in his last year here, albeit Richards' contract has already kicked-in (and by the way: the aforementioned is proof that Lombardi has a bit of an, ah, unsentimental side to him)...

Yup. Dean traded Lubo who was seen as a core guy and was owed big money (at the time) for the next I believe 5-6 years.

The reasoning was that his play had suffered the season before the trade and Dean wasn't sure of the financial commitment, well Lubo's season wasn't even in the same ballpark of awfulness as MR's 2013-2014. So we will see, but yeah I don't consider Dean the type of guy that won't be able to make difficult decisions.

Do you guys think Carter would be good at 2C?i don't know. Our second line seems a bit weak don't you think.

I'm more of a center first guy, instead of wingers.

But if DL does drop Richards, and not get some offense, then for the love of god get rid of RR, Mitchell, and Greene. So ****ing slow and neither can pass. Such a liability in the playoffs.

To piggyback on the earlier quotes from Sutter, and there's stuff from Quick on the blog, as well:

Nice that he's not railroading the team and it sounds like they had a good practice today.

I can see the Sharks coming out cocky as hell next game and trying to impose the same way. Would love to come back to L.A. 1-1--let's get it done!

If the D doesn't play like they have their heads lodged between their legs and the forwards show they have a set of balls and become assertive, then I have hope that they can draw even. Quick has to be a lot better too. Let's home that embarrassing 40 minutes of hockey motivates them to play better.

Good to hear. No time to dwell after such an atrocious game. Next...
