On the bright side, he should be able to get an employment referral from any of the 75 places around town that he's worked since he's been here.

Yeah instead of "take Jim Slater to work" it could be renamed, "find Jim Slater a job", I've already suggested playing assistant coach for the Moose 2.0!

why? on average that's like an extra faceoff win or 2 per game where a win doesn't even guarantee possession (especially when it's Jim Slater on the ice)

If you lose the face off, you aren't getting possession. He's the best face off man on the team, I think without checking it. That's worthwhile. I know Slater is the new goat here but O'Dell has done nothing since he's been brought up, good or bad. Slater is worthwhile to have on the roster for this run here. He's slow, he doesn't score at all, but he has some level of value.

What does the fact that Jets hit the post have anything to do with my original statement that Pavs got lucky with a couple of Caps posts?

A puck that hit the post is not a lucky save. It is not even a shot on goal. How about all the other misses, was Pav lucky on them too? Yeah, OK. The ones that hit the post were close. Pav played a great game and there was no need to belittle it. He has been outstanding this week and is a big part of why we are back in a playoff spot.

Another point: Tyler Myers is unbelievable. If Kane lights it up in Buffalo, I really don't care that much at this point. If Myers is the legacy from this trade, Chevy did great on that one. I liked Bogo but no way he can do what Myers has done recently.

other than create scoring chances while also preventing them with worse linemates which is the inverse of what Slater brings even with his ummm faceoff expertise

Slater made some really bad decisions last night. At least twice he gave the puck and away directly leading to some great chances for the Caps. He's not exactly automatic on face-offs either, especially against top guys. He takes too many penalties. I think he's become a liability. When he's playing with 2 and 23 on D it's often a complete gong show.

Highest FO% with more than 100 faceoffs taken:

Bergeron: 59.9%
Malholtra: 59.4%
Thornton: 58.3%
Stastny: 58.2%
Slater: 57.9%
Brouwer: 57.1%
Gaustad: 56.6%

I'm no Slater fan, but he's pretty much as close to an automatic as you can get. If you value faceoff men, he's one of the best.

 ... Why?

And I will say that the farts are plentiful.

So, does Pav get the Oil or the 'Nucks? Or ....... both?

One good thing with Hutch playing as many games as he has, Pavs should be well rested. I wouldn't be against him playing both if he has a good game against the Oilers but I wouldn't be against Hutch getting the nod on Monday either.

Yup, he's looking like Chris Pronger minus the mean streak. Even if he maintains an iota of that performance over a full year next season, he's a big upgrade over Boneheadosian. Can't wait until Morrissey joins this crew.

Never thought I'd say this this soon, but I'm eating a lot of crow regarding my comments on Adam Lowry earlier this year. I remember during the ASB, arguing with others Jets fans on the main board that Lowry shouldn't be playing in the top line, let alone filling in for Bryan frickin Little as #1 C. If you told a couple months back me he would hit 20 points on the year while doing heavy lifting on the first line for close to 10 games, I would've laughed in your face.

I'd like to see how Lowry does while centering Perreault and Tlusty, when the former returns this week.

Its 10 points either way, 5 - 5 - 0 or 4 - 4 - 2 its all the same, 96 pts. I'd feel better with 98 though.

I don't think the schedule is going to be our downfall now, could be wrong though. Minnesota has a tougher schedule than we do. However, both the Wild and Jets have proven they can weather the storm and remain in the playoff hunt in the toughest division in league history. Kudos to us (and them).

I'm just beginning to realize that Calgary and Vancouver would be eaten up if they were in the central. The Jets' team toughness and physical makeup are the only reasons we can match up with teams like STL without having half our boys in the infirmary.

Big Buff Factor

When everyone is healthy, I'd like to see this;

Stafford-Scheifele-Wheeler
Ladd-Little-Perreault
Frolik-Lowry-Tlusty
Halischuk-Slater-Stempniak
Thorburn

Enstrom-Myers
Chiarot-Byfuglien
Stuart-Trouba

Pavelec

I'm sorry, but if Pavelec keeps playing like he has, this team can do some serious damage and push any team in a 7 game series.

With the way they are playing, I don't see any way you can break up the SSW line.

With Big Buff on our playoff roster all bets are off. He plays like he did mid-season we could go on a tear. That is why he needs to be signed.

...quick thoughts...

Pavs with another really strong effort. He was really tracking the puck well and didn't give up many rebounds. Clutch performance.

The Scheifele line was fantastic again. Scheifele continues to impress. Stafford is a genius along the walls, and dominant below the dots in the offensive zone.

Enstrom with a terrific game. He was solid all night. Myers was also very good, though I think he's played better. He had a few miscues.

Trouba with another really strong defensive effort. Stuart tries hard. Nice to see him pot one.

Pardy and Harrison had some "adventurous" shifts again tonight. I still can't figure out why Maurice likes to play them with the 3rd and 4th lines, especially right after they score.

I thought Stempniak and Tlusty again tonight. Quietly effective. Slater had some pretty bad shifts. He lost some key face-offs in his own zone tonight. I would much prefer O'Dell on the 3rd line.

Thorburn had some bad shifts. I thought he got caught out of position and on the ice too long a few times tonight.

Great team win. Really impressive.

Starting the 4th line after a huge goal is something that drives me nuts and just don't get why he does that.

Pardy has done a lot better then in the past but Harrison has been pretty rough. Definitely our weakest link.

Every time the Jets got pinned in their own end Slater was on the ice. Every . single . one.

It appears Maurice does not agree with you though. He appeared to double shift Slater a few times at the expense of O'Dell. Either that or Slater was just failing to get off. He was on with Thor & Hali quite a bit.

Chevy might not offer Slater a contract but if nobody picks him up, I can see him finishing his career in Winnipeg with the Moose and then working for True North in the foundation. He is pretty much the best player for doing charity work in the city.

He can't do better than stopping all the shots. Well, not unless he scores the winning goal. Damn Pav, can't score! :sarcasm:

He still gave up a few rebounds but I thought it was within the range of normal for a good goalie. Didn't actually count them but well below his normal.

Ride the hot goalie until he's not hot.

As for his game last night, I have noticed a difference in his game over the past 5 games. I can't recall Pavelec tracking the puck with this level of accuracy before. He just seems more fluid, and his side to side movement isn't as extreme as in the past.

It's like he's "settled down" - I don't know how else to describe it.

P.M. decision putting Pav in net and keeping the lineup the same as previous game against the Blues makes him look like a genius.
Incredible how this team out perform elite teams without their key players: Buff, Matt, Little, Charoit..

Don't forget that Myers was out that game, as well (in addition to Buff, Little and Perreault.) I was at that Tampa game--it was packed with Jets fans and the arena was, as they like to say in Tampa, electric . Postma and a possibly-concussed Toby kept us in the game, against all odds, until Wheeler's heroics won it. That was a pivotal game, for sure.
The subsequent wins against SJ and St L were great, but tonight was the game that sealed the deal, IMO. Against a team that had not only been our kryptonite, but seemed to exist for the express purpose of showing the Jets were not playoff-worthy, we showed we are a different team this year.

Perfect post I agree with it all. However we need to hold serve against the Oilers, there stars are on fire since the all star break and they are playing loose. Last night felt particularly good due to the opponent and time of season. Almost like a right of passage win.

Really timely hot streak. Every win with A hot Pavs in net and no Buff, Little, and Matty P feels like a +1 win but We need the next one in Edmonton badly. We are still deep in the dog fight so no time to ease up.

5-3-2 (98pts) vs. 5-5-0 (96pts). See the examples I posted earlier for a more complete thought - you're responding to a snippet.

10 games is a small sample size but we have being playing at above a PPG pace all season so there is no reason to expect that to end now. If we maintain our average PPG pace we end up at 98 which would be a beautiful thing.
