Paul Maurice: Class act and a legendary coach

At what point did I force either of you to respond, pal?
You're seething that people are responding to your comments on a message board forum? What exactly do you think people do on message board forums?

ITS THE FACT THAT THEY ALMOST DIDNT! No one remembers the cup win, everyone remembers they almost didn’t!
Friggin ESPN was doing it it while they were shaking hands, toolbag mcdonnah “imagine how the Maurice narrative would be different if they had lost this game...“
Go f*** off ESPN. I Couldn’t even watch their tripe coverage throughout the playoffs. Messier incessantly blowing the Rangers and then the Oilers. Round 2 was Boston centric coverage with frigging Casey Bostonboy Affleck doing intro monologues. ESPN sucks at covering the NHL.

I find it even more enjoyable to watch now lmao.

With all due respect, he was almost one goal from joining Todd McLellan in the reverse sweep category. It’s great they got this far but getting so close to getting reverse swept is a bad look regardless of the outcome.

Who's it a bad look for? Future free agents, coaches, or just salty Canadian fans?

Everyone hates the Panthers, the look ain't getting any prettier so its always been about just winning the cup.

People just look at Maurice's record and say he's mediocre, but look at those rosters he had and compare to other coaches that are considered great. Its not even comparable.

People talk about Quenneville since he's the most comparable contemporary, who I think is an amazing coach, but look at the rosters he had, they're littered with HHOFers (Pronger, MacInnis, Hull, Sakic, Forsberg, Roy, Kane, Toews, Keith, etc...) and then compare to Maurice pre-Panthers with the struggling Whalers/Canes, then the shitshow in Toronto, then back to a re-building Canes team. Winnipeg had a good roster, but nobody on the level of HHOF.

Now that he has an actual good roster and he goes back-to-back finals. And I can say Panthers success is a direct result of the team buying in fully with Maurice's coaching, playing essential playoff-style hockey from game 1. The team hasn't lost when leading to start in the third period for like two seasons now. That's incredible.

Is he a legendary coach? I don't know how you judge that. He could be coaching for another 10 years, he's not even that old. By the time he does retire, he'll likely be 1st in all-time games coached and 2nd in all-time wins. I think that's pretty good and HHOF worthy.

While the most of Canada was rooting for Edmonton to win, part of me was rooting for the Panthers to not choke, and win on Home Ice in Game 7 so Maurice could hoist the Cup over his head. Congratulations to him and the Florida Panthers organization after finally getting it done after 30 years!

It’s just the nature of national coverage that they’re going to go with certain marketable narratives. They’re a business first and foremost, so they’re always going to talk more about the big markets and big stars. No way around it, and no point being mad about it. It’s a symptom of success to have to think about it.

Its a small thing that most people probably don't care about, but I don't think there's a better interviewee in hockey than Paul Maurice.

I normally don't care for post game interviews, but he's the only one that can get me to watch those things the whole way through.

His Cup Speech is one of the best I've ever heard too.

Do what I do man, mute the TV during the intermission of national broadcasts.
Hope you are enjoying the party of winning the Cup

All teams that win the Cup are one goal away the game they actually win the Cup before they go on to win it all. No exceptions. Argue that one.

"Got this far"...you mean win it all?

It may look bad for you, but most of us aren't glass half empty people, especially for things that didn't happen.

I was in the Oilers’ corner all year, but I have a soft spot for him. It’s good to see him win one after so long. He’s hard to root against.
