2021-22 Laine led the Columbus Blue Jackets with 42 even strength points, which was 4 more than anyone on Montreal Canadiens that season (Suzuki). Laine did it in 56 games. Had he stayed healthy and been able to keep that pace, he'd been top15 league wide. His career average is 44 EVP per 82 games. These are all as counted by NHL.com, so not only 5v5 and I think also might include 6v5 when playing with empty net.
I guess the people who think he's useless 5v5 and would score like 10 EVP in a full season also think he'd pot 50+ PP goals... or maybe it's been only 14 games after he didn't play hockey for almost a year and just got back from a nasty knee injury and is as hot as ever on the power play?

The best case scenario is happening. We received Laine basically for free. He get back to his super star player level. He fall in love with the city and his fans. After what he went thru, now he prioritize his happiness over the big money. Next season he accept to sign a new contract with us for a very fair amount. We end up with 2 players in the top 10 snipers of the league with him and Caufield.

I agree. To me this sounds like a plausible scenario. It will also give Laine personally a chance to gun for the Rocket and for the Cup. Its a win-win for Montreal as well.
The only thing that happens imo is... Which your post did not specify.. is that the next contract extension will be short (and cheapish), as he bets on himself BIG and sets him up for a HUGE contract extension from age 28/29.
Laine will definitely be willing to sign a longer contract already now, but it would have to be a high number. Is Montreal willing to take the risk? I would give Laine a shorter cheaper contract instead and earmark the money saved into the later bigger contract, if both sides are willing to think of it in that way.

That would be the best for the Habs but would Laine and his agent really do it? It leaves Laine quite vulnerable in terms of signing a new contract after that contract ends.
And while I 100% agree that Laine will prioritize other things than (only/mostly) money, its hard to make such deals, i.e. deals which one knows are not optimized financially.
I think Laine will tell his agent that he like the city and want to retire as a habs. We will sign him to a fair deal on the cheap side. 6years X 8 millions something like that. With the cap raising it will be a very good contract for one of the best sniper in the league.
I could be very wrong too and after next season he is gone.
Laine is not even in full game shape IMO.
He has like zero quickness and his line perpetually gets hemmed in their zone…that being said I think he’s great.
Great possession player. Nice hands. Clever playmaker. Showing great back checking. I know he’s not the quickest at his best but I hope and think he’ll improve that area as he gets more reps.

Yup the minute we see him getting quicker in puck possession the more those moves will result in SOG's. Two or three times he looked like he was in perfect position to let fly but it closed on him before he could react. That WILL change provided he can play games.
The internal Suzuki cap is irrelevant to the Laine contract, as the cap has since risen substantially, and Laine is only providing UFA years.

I could see him signing a long-term deal, he'll be 27 in April, so a 6-8 year deal will likely be the rest of his career.
Money will be the biggest question in contract negotiations. If long-term stability and comfort are Laine's top priorities, I think taking a pay cut (relevant to the FA market) to stay in Montreal could be a option for him. Stability will likely mean trade protection though.
Now that he's finally back on track and seemingly comfortable, I don't see him signing short-term to chase the money and deal with the uncertainly that comes with it, personally. He's already been bounced around, and it didn't go well for him.

He is , but he wasn't back in 2022-2023, so this looks more like the result of missing a lots of time due to injuries.
