He chose to come to Montreal. I think he’s that kind of player. If his body doesn’t fail him, he’ll be happy here.

Now, will he sign an extension? Who knows. Money talks.
I still think we should have signed Monahan for 3 years, 7M AAV...

But I think Laine will prioritize his mental health over his ego of being as high on the pecking order as possible at his position in the pay scale higherarchy. I think he'll accept to fit within the cap structure Hughes negotiates with him, so as to try to build a winner. But we'll see when it's actually time to sign. I guess he's eligible to sign an extension already this summer?

I liked Monahan and respected greatly the attitude he brought to a young team, but there’s no comparison in terms of pure skill…. Laine is the most talented F Habs have had since Kovalev of 07-08 season

For sure, I was just saying it's nice when these players fall into our laps.

But, I like it when they stay here long term (like Kovalev) instead of for a cup of coffee, like Radulov, Monahan, and even Kovalchuk. I know most thought Kovalchuk had nothing left. We don't need to revisit that.

I hope Laine extends this summer. Then, the only part of our top six we'll need to worry about is Dach: Suzuki, Caufield, Laine, Slaf, Demidov, Dach. Most NHL top 6's don't have a player as good as Dach can be as their 6th best forward.

Laine sort of vanished from most people's radar after he got traded to a minor market in Columbus.

If you look at the eliteprospects page and his "highlights " section, it becomes clear why the current habs players are looking up to him, they were a year or two younger watching him being the MVP in juniors WC or world championships.

Laine is a generational talent, his problem was that a lot of people hated him just because his existence provided reason to doubt the Matthews pick. That draft had two incredible talents (just like MacKinnon/Barkov and McDavid/Eichel) and one of them went on focus hiatus for many years. Laine was buried in small market and injuries.

The talent has always been there. I'm hoping he has a long enough healthy stretch to convince the rest of the world in Montreal.

He's an absolute game breaker, because he has the best shot in the world. He doesn't need a in the slot tap in play. He needs a clear lane from 40 feet out for the exact same effect as most players do from 2 feet out. That's a skill no other team can claim. If habs lean into it, greatness follows.

Jets leaned into it early (due to Wheeler injury) and Laine was beating the pace of Lemieux, Carson and Gretzky in his rookie season scoring. He was so far ahead of Matthews in points at the time of his concussion, everyone was giving him the calder.

His crazy talent never went away, it's been hidden in smaller market and masked by injuries. I hope he finally gets a good stretch of health because world needs one of it's best hockey players to be able to showcase his exceptional skill

I don't mind Laine ruining the tank. Atleast games are fun to watch. Not like the rebuild was going to give us the 70's Habs anyway
Say goodbye to Martone, Schafer or Misa. They going to have great careers. Martone would been ideal fit here. He is a beast, plays heavy game, 40-50 goal scorer

The tank can do a lot, but it takes 5-6 years, not 3. The ‘70s habs are not likely to be emulated in the cap era.

Another high pick or two could pretty much fill out the team by 2027 or 2028. It could be the difference between being a really good team for a decade, or a bubble team for a year or two.

Had Laine played from day one this team probably has 3-4 more points by now and is just out of the 8th spot, so be “happy” he at least missed 25 games. Also, the they beat NYI and Nashville, nothing to get too excited about. There will be a lot more losses. The first round of the 2023 draft is where HuGo screwed up the tank, possibly fatally.

Agreed. The talent was always there. It was health and mental issues that got in the way. If that’s all behind him the. It’s a huge steal.

I’ve still tempered my expectations though. Great start and I hope it continues.

Laine's shot is a unicorn. It doesn't look natural. He keeps it close to his body but somehow gets tremendous leverage on it, regardless. And he also masks it with a deceptive and quirky release.

He hasn't even taken a onetimer as hab yet, and most people know him from that. His shooting is absolutely unicorn. I expect there to be better in the future but there are no better in past or present. His shot arsenal and accuracy is unique, one of one. 1/1

Been fun to watch Laine but we still have several tank commanders, no 2C and likely will be weaker post TDL. I’m not worried about a couple of Ws against weak teams we are still picking bottom 5

(Cue the magical St Louis Blues-like run to the Cup)
