Value of: Patrik Laine & 16 or 17 OA

Laine is a golden god and Montreal doesn’t deserve him. He will snipe the sun itself so that it never shines upon their city again. Can’t believe they don’t recognize his brilliance.

How about a 3rd for Laine straight up
There is zero chance Laine returns a third “straight up”. Laine has negative value. It will (imo) cost the Habs a first to move him without serious retention.

Hope he wakes up and realizes hockey makes more money than Fortnite for him. As for the other part, Chicago could work. Bedard made Donato look like a useful player so why not Laine.
Donato has 1000% more of a work ethic than Laine does lmao

I don’t see a good reason for Montreal to pay to get rid of Laine. Just buy him out unless an injury prevents that. If so, why not ride it out or waive him? Sharks or Hawks may put in a claim. You never know with only one year and teams like the Sharks needing to spend 20 mil to get to the floor next season.

His contract expires next summer, hes not much of burden to a time with cap space. But id seriously take anything for him. 0 point in paying someone to take him at a 7m/1 year deal

They will for sure ride him out and hope he gets his knee fixed. They really shoudl shut him down now and have him do surgery to prepare fo next season.

The point is the Habs will not be able to move Laine for just “anything” unless they retain (a lot) and add picks. The more they’re willing to retain; the less picks they add.
Habs have the cap room to just bury him in the minors. Waivers and bury.

Laine is a tricky asset to divest.

No contending team wants that kind of 5 on 5 effort level on their team.

So you're looking at a rebuilding team that needs some pop on the PP, but at the same time, not necessarily the best example that young players should be learning from.

There's no divesting Laine. Habs just see it through. If Laine gets healthy, you never know what he may bring. Worst case, you have what you have now and its only 1 x season.

It's not the end of the world for Montreal, certainly.

They're probably a little ahead of schedule in their rebuild as it is.

The only question is whether it becomes a bit of a distraction in Montreal's famously twitchy media market.

Its a distraction if he has more than 1 x year remaining. With one year its just status quo. Habs also have a really good core group, leadership and a supportive coaching staff. This is the best environment for Laine and he probably knows it.

Sure, 85% retain for a 3rd

Sure, 85% retain for a 3rd
Not happening. 85% retention will only lessen the cost to the Habs to move the contract. This is likely one of those double retention trades where the Habs retain 50% and they pay a third party to retain 50% of that amount, so the reviving club gets Laine for the double retention cap allocation. Then that club would pay the Habs a third or something of value.
Imo the Habs are far better off using waivers and burying Laine in the minors.

Donato was an irrelevant NHLer until he was put onto Bedard’s hip this season. He could have broken out late or it could be a one hit wonder season. It’s more so to get Laine to wake up and realize if lower profile guys can do it, so can he (even with his mental health issues).
