Even Thomas Hickey said on NHL Network yesterday that the Islanders had no identity and he's 100% right.

Every successful hockey club NEEDS an identity.

They were a great grinding team with structure. Now they don't grind and they don't have structure. The decreased effectiveness of the fourth line and the addition of guys like Holmstrom and Engvall, and Barzal to the wing has made this team pretty soft up front, up and down the lineup. Defensively Bolduc, Aho, and Dobson all leave something to be desired from a physicality standpoint.

We'll see if any of that changes with a different approach.

Absolutely, they can't run four lines like they used to because the fourth line has lost it's effectiveness over the years (even when Cizikas was healthy). I am hoping Roy notices this early on balances out the lines so that they can get back to having balance on all four lines.

As far as being soft, this team failed to replace the snarl and swagger that Johnny Boychuk brought and while that's only one guy, that type of energy is contagious. Dare I say that Komarov (even for all of his limitations) had a similar effect on the Islanders. Romanov does line up guys every once in a while and blow them up, but he is not a fighter or a vocal presence.

Unfortunately, there's really no one available that comes to mind that would make the Islanders less soft. Maybe Patrick Maroon from Minnesota, who's nickname is literally "Big Rig" and was an important fourth line piece to the Tampa Bay Cups. Yes he's as slow as Martin, but he's as productive as Clutterbuck and Martin COMBINED.

The Islanders became easy to play against. Full circle to the leadup to hiring Barry Trotz.

Incidentally, Bill Lindsay on NHL Network was saying that the Isles need to get back to that grinding style when Trotz was here. That’s the team’s identity and they never should have left that.

Hope Roy realizes you can’t be slow and effective in todays NHL.
He’ll have to get these guys to figure out how to move the puck faster and accurately.

It’s not just about skating speed.

Definitely agree. Some of it could be philosophy based too. I forget what I was listening to recently that mentioned some coaches don't really believe in hitting as much as they used to and that is why we see so many guys not finishing checks. The thought is that it expends energy that could be used elsewhere. Has Lambert been okay with guys passing up on hits or grinding in the corners because he'd rather them use their energy elsewhere?

Guys like Engvall need to grind more. I don't mean big hits, because that's very clearly not a part of his DNA, but he needs to angle guys off and go hard into the corners. Players don't like pressure and they really don't like getting hit, establishing that part of the game leads to turnovers and should help the transition game. I also think that the emphasis needs to be on the neutral zone defensively. Let these guys create offense off turnovers. There's enough speed and shooters on this roster to make that an effective strategy.

Lambert's release was coming. I think we could finally all sense it. But I certainly didn't expect Roy to be tabbed as our next HC. It's certainly worth a shot.

And anyone complaining about the Roy hire who was begging for Lambert to get fired need to get a grip. You got your wish. Lambert's gone. See what Roy can do with this roster before you lose your minds over the hire. Probably can be said of every team's fan base, but we have some real headcases who simply cannot be pleased not matter what moves are made.
-rant over-

I also did not expect it to be Roy but I think it is a good choice considering who is available, and anyone complaining should be aware that all the coaches that are available have also been fired multiple times for doing a bad job.

I've always loved Roy's no bullshit approach to the game. He takes hockey very seriously and will bring back that "you have to go through the f***ing island" approach we lost with Trotz.

No more Fred Flinstone/Weight/Lambert type of bullshit and excuses.
I m sens fan , so frustrated that Andlauer ( new owner ) have not named Roy when he takes place. I gonna follow Isles closely

Pageau and Barzal said they where happy with the morning skate
