An absolute legend. All the best on his retirement. He is so passionate on hockey this surprised me. He'll be involved in hockey in another way I have to believe.

As you can tell by my name im a huge Bergy fan. I'll miss seeing him play but I doubt this will be the last we see of him.

The ultimate hockey player and role model/person.

I really thought Patrice would return.

Regardless, I'm glad he did what is best for himself, his family, and his legacy.

One of the greatest to ever play the game, and, as noted below, a legitimate case for the greatest defensive forward ever. Who could, lest we forget, also produce handsomely in the offensive zone as well.

What more, really, can be said about this player, this leader, this man?

We love you, Patrice.

Good luck with all.

It was an absolute pleasure watching Patrice his whole career. I saw him live his rookie year and his final year plus a bunch in between. The guy never took a shift off in 19 seasons which is completely mind blowing. What a career. What a guy. I’ll miss watching him big time.

I will be wearing my Bergy shirt on the plane home Thursday.

Marchy gets the C with McAvoy waiting in the wings for the next 2 seasons and then it will be the changing of the guard
I'd rather them not hot potato the C around for the 4th time in less than 6 seasons. I think they'll go with McAvoy as the next captain.

Lots of dense, great posts about the guy already, and I don't have anything unique to add that hasn't already been covered within those, so all I'll say is that this was actually, viscerally, deeply saddening. Love the man, and only ever met him once during the 05 lockout in prov.

Best to ever do it. Gainey can suck a turd.

Additionally, this is the best thing for this team, right now. They need to pick higher, and re-examine (thoroughly) the guys who are making the final calls on their NA selections.

I'm not a fan of Simmons but this is a great article

“How many players in the league could be the game star and get no points,” said Hall of Fame coach Ken Hitchcock, who had Bergeron at two best-on-best Olympic Games. “He had games like that where he completely controlled the game. He completely controlled your team.

“To me, he was the head of the snake. If you couldn’t neutralize him, if you couldn’t make him uncomfortable, you had no chance of beating them. To have a player like that, who carries the conscience of his team around, who is there for the kids, who is zero maintenance to have around, who’s a player you can put anywhere and with anybody if you’re a coach, that’s an unbelievable gift to have.”
