I don't think he was ever considered as goal scorer.

In the draft they were talking about how he was a all around guy, not a dynamic goal scorer
but with a great two way game (Bob McKenzie), mix of Justin Williams and Anze Kopitar.

Boston picked him 25th in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft (at the time he was listed at 5 foot 10 and 170+ lbs)
- he was ranked from 22 to 35

Lets start from 2012

He went to play to Sweden, to develop more as a hockey player
played mostly in the J20 Super Elite for Södertälje.

36 games
12 goals
17 assists
29 points
+6
77 penalty minutes

2 goals, 2 assists, 4 points +2 and 10 penalty minutes in the play-offs

Also played in the AllsVenskan for 11 games, there he scored 2 goals and added 1 assist
In the SHL Q series in 5 games, didn't score any points (Södertälje were not promoted to the SHL and remained in the AlllSvenskan)

WJC-18 : 1 goal, 1 assist in 5 games

2013-2014 (his draft year)

Pasta played mostly in the AllSvenskan, scored 8 goals, 16 assists, 24 points in 36 games, was +7 and had 28 penalty minutes
12 games combined in the WJC-18 & WJC, scored 1 goal and 7 assists, 8 points.

Experts/analysts were praising his WJC games in Sweden, where he scored a goal and two assists in five games,
even though didn't score that much, he played really well, showed strong two way game.

2014-2015 (his first NA pro season)

Started the season from the AHL, scored 2 primary assists in his P-Bruins debut, scored 2 goals, 4 assists in first 4 games in A.
- all of his assists were primary.

Got his first call up in late November after scoring 4 goals, 14 assists in 18 games in the AHL
- played 5 games, 1 assist, ice time; 7:53, 17:02, 17:00, 15:34 and 13:37

Rest of the December he played in the AHL,, his last AHL games of his rookie season.
His pro debut in NA, in the AHL : 11 goals, 17 assists, 28 points in 25 games, he was +16. (76 sog)

He scored his first career goal in his 2nd game back, he ended up scoring 4 goals in 2 games,
then only once in his next 12 games.

His ice time varied; in his first 5 games back he averaged 16:30 per game, but next 7, 13:10 in average
then his ice time jumped, also his scoring; next 24 games, 6 goals, 15 assists, 21 points,
ended his rookie season with 5 games without a point.

NHL rookie season : 10 goals, 17 assists, 27 points in 46 games (93 sog)
(3 pp goals - 24 ev points )

2015-2016

He started his season from the NHL this time, his ice time continued to vary a lot, mostly bottom-6 role
but had every now and then good 15, 16, 17 minute games as well.

he lost number of games after thumb surgery, playing 51 games.

15 goals, 11 assists, 26 points, 108 sog, all of his points were scored 5 on 5

2016-2017 (the breakout #1 season)

He started his last ELC contract year with a bang, 3 game goal streak, 4 game point streak, he got a steady ice time from the get go
and stayed in the top 6 the entire season.

5 goals in his first 3 games. 15 shots on goal. Other than his late December 8 game pointless streak, Pasta scored goals and points
steadily through his 3rd season. His average ice time grew with almost 5 minutes per game. - it showed in production, also sog

34 goals (12 PP), 36 assists, 70 points with 263 sog in 75 games, huge difference from 93 and 108 sog seasons

His breakout season brought him a 6 year, 6.66 million dollar contract (that expires after this season and his new 11,25 mill contract kicks in)

2017-2018

His next season was a middle of the park kind of season, no production progression from previous season, but none of the other kind either

35 goals (13 PP), 80 points, with exact the same ice time what previous season, played his first play-offs games though,
- two strong seasons in a row, but no star level production yet. (had 30 less shots on goal what last season)

2018-2019

Pasta's average ice time increased by about 1,5 minutes per game, his sog count dropped slightly, but his s% increased with 3.
38 goals (17 PP), 81 points in 66 games, this was his first season when he led the Bruins in goals.

He had solidified himself as an 30+ goal and 70-80 point elite skater, next goal; star level
- had a strong 1,23 ppg season

Next season he had his second breakout season, where he became the star play player we all know,
but this season... he has gone beyond and become the best goal scorer in the NHL (AINEC)

He never really had a neck for scoring goals, but here we are, 60 goals, 109 points in a single season in the NHL,
when he was really never regarded as an serious offensive threat either..

| i was going to write more, from each season, but then ugh... i got bored :) and yeah, its not very good read, but its something at least | |

the start of his career and development to me prove that goal scoring can be a mindset matter. a lot of the best goal scorers are somewhat brash and that shooting selfishness/confidence is a natural trait because of how much they believe that shooting gives their team the best option of scoring and aren't afraid to show it. young players can start out a bit too deferential if they aren't imbued with that trait and are on teams with veteran stars. some guys never develop it.

Pastrnak is 5th in goals scored over the last 5 years.

It goes in total goals:
Draisaitl
Matthews
McDavid
Ovechkin
Pastrnak

Not sure how he could be considered "The Best", when clearly he isn't. I mean Matthews beats him in total goals, goals per game, and Rockets won.

He is definitely in some elite company though. These five guys were the only ones to score over 200 goals in the last five year. There is a 30 goal gap between Pastrnak and Connor in sixth place.

I don't think he was ever considered as goal scorer.

Well, at least Pastrnak scored a bunch of goals during his youth. Right now he's sitting between two "pure" playmakers in the goals standings which to me is even crazier than Pasta becoming an elite goalscorer.

But good for Bruins fans that Chiarelli found this gem before leaving. I can only imagine how much Sweeney's botched tenure as a GM would hurt if they didn't have Pastrnak and/or Marchand didn't become a late bloomer superstar.

are you going to qualify this or just spit it out and abandon thread?

I think Rocket is still going to McDavid this year, but would be fun if they end up tied.. Would be 2nd Rocket for Pasta, both shared

I remember the big change was when one year he was the talented guy who I felt could score goals in bunches, but his major problem / flaw was that he was easily muscled off the puck. Then he came back after the off season and bam! he couldn‘t be muscled off the puck that easily anymore: as a matter of fact, he couldn‘t be muscled off the puck at all, almost. I don’t know how many muscles he put up that off season or whatever else he did, but it worked wonders. And that‘s when his goals and point totals started moving up steadily. From the season he won the Richard (with Ovechkin), I felt that he had in his chords to get to 60 or more goals. Glad he already got there!

Yeah, Pasta is smoking hot, wouldn‘t be surprised if he gets to 64… but chances are high McDavid will add to his total if he suits up in the last game. I think they will hold him out if standing are settled by then.

I remember watching him in preseason After they drafted him thinking he was 'unique' and had a good shot. Chiarelli's last good pick before he got canned.
No wonder Chiarelli was fired. He could’ve been like the 4-D chess playing Flyers and selected the great Travis Sanheim in that draft instead, but went with Pastrnak. :sarcasm:

This. All of this.

Best goal scorer in the NHL? No, but Pasternak is an absolute stud and would be in my top 3 for the Hart trophy this year along with M. Tkachuk (assuming Panthers make the playoffs) and the obvious winner, McDavid.

Interesting take. I know that the Bruins botched the draft 8 years ago, but in fairness to Sweeney he had been on the job for three weeks come draft day and had not actually seen any of these players play. Sweeney had been in charge of player development and the AHL team before he got his promotion. He trusted his scouts. The same scouts that identified Pasta for Chia the year before.

I think the thread was indicating one of the best goal scorers, or a top goal scorer in the world. Not necessarily the absolutely best goal scorer in the world. Just worded badly. And even for the not even close part, I would like to just imagine that's worded wrong.

Someone else mentioned it but his development accelerated the year he put on some pounds.

There wasn’t a chance in hell he weighed more than 160 pounds his first year. Some of the hits he took looked hilarious, like EA NHL special effects.

Still turns the puck over like he hates touching it though. If he ever cleaned that up he’d score 80 in a year
