Or they should just bring back the rule where you get a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick as compensation if a team hires your assistant/AHL coach as their HC. There's still a rule like that in the NFL I think

If the habs need a coach the pick won’t be much help. Maybe they bring back Vigneault, if he’s available.

I don't think he takes an assistant coach job over head coach in his hometown, only a head coach position. He's been an assistant coach for a long time already.

There never was such a rule. If a coach is under contract compensation can be worked out if both parties agree to do so but there never was a rule that guaranteed specific compensation.

I think he likely just made that up given what I know from past posts. I could be wrong but it certainly fits the M.O.

True it was never specific compensation, teams had to negotiate it themselves (always a 2nd or 3rd pick) but in effect my point is still the same.

Teams could prevent a coach from signing somewhere else even after firing them if they still had time left on their contract.

This hurt the upward trajectory for coaches as they couldn’t seek out promotions with other teams.

But with no compensation it isn’t really fair to the teams who spend time and resources developing a coach in the AHL or as an assistant just for them to go to a rival.

Seemed like a pretty good system to me, if you want my AHL coach to coach your NHL team, give me a 3rd round pick.

As if he couldn't take a few hours for an interview. Laval had like a five day break just this last week.

If he has a 7-8+ losing streak I could see it happening as the ezpectations will be higher. Especially if they get better players this summer.
