Racewalking is probably the dumbest event at the whole Olympics... and that is saying something.

I would be embarrassed if I did that event.

It would be funny if there was cheap/feasible way of implementing sensors = forcing athletes to stick to ''ground contact'' rule... And see how much the times worsen :)

Like, I am no race walk judge... but so many of them have both their feet off the ground basically every stride.

Half of them just jog while doing the funny hip thing to throw off the judges aha.

Hell, the wiki for racewalking has a still that shows multiple of them that should be DQ'd lmao.

Basically whoever is the best at pretending not to jog and does not get noticed by the judges is the Gold medalist.

DQ them all.

One thing is sure - since (first) childbirth I've always been fighting tight hips after workouts and them doing the hip thing on hard road surface makes me instinctively wince every time haha

But yeah, they are all running. Sensors aside, not sure how to fix this.

Handball and field hockey really suffer in comparison to other ball sports. Handball because you can't really contest possession like you can in soccer so the teams basically take turns trying to score from distance, and creating offense in field hockey is a total chore compared to doing it on ice. And then there are the constant whistles for the ball touching people's feet.

I still watch the Dutch women's games, though. Best uniforms in all of sports.

Handball is basically water polo on land...

but yeh, the big difference is in water polo you can basically fight people when off the ball, so means way more advantage to bringing ball inside and way less fouls called. Even though technically any time you touch someone who has the ball its a foul... but it is kind of let go to an extent so can contest in some ways.

So even though I think water polo kind of sucks as a spectator sport is more enjoyable than handball as more varied, ball can be turned over without a shot or foul, and kind of quicker moving.

Really makes me sad the misinformation being spouted about Imane Khelif right now...

Cannot imagine what it must be like...

People spreading rumours she is Trans etc.

It is a complicated matter but her and Lin Yu‑ting are "women" in terms of what society in general would view as a woman. That is pretty certain.

Are they "intersex"...maybe... are they hyperandrogenous... maybe... though that has not been confirmed either. All we actually know is they both had elevated testosterone levels on some tests.

But neither are trans yet it is being spread around as truth now.

Now, should they be allowed to compete in international sport. Who knows. But they are allowed, and that is not their fault

1) The current misinformation is sad and I cannot imagine what she is going through
2) BUT she should not be allowed to compete and there should be better ''benchmarks'' to control/test for that

It's a tough situation and maybe she shouldn't be allowed to compete for safety reasons, but it's sickening the way the culture warriors are using it in their anti-trans hate campaign. There ain't no way someone from a rural village in Algeria transitioned the way Lia Thomas did.

Brooke Francis and Lucy Spoors won gold in the double sculls then celebrated with their children.

Yeh, it is a really tough area.

They used to have the testosterone tests in all female sport... but then scientists effectively said that a lot of women can just have naturally high testosterone and it can spike at certain times... so it was a bit problematic... as an XX athlete can fail that test too.

And then you have people walking around on the street who are XY who are for sure women and dont even know they are XY... I believe the estimate is around 1% of women.

And it gets more complicated when factor in the "Barr Body" XXY women... who can give birth! As well as people with CAIS, who are XY but actually dont respond to testosterone.

Just hard to know where on earth to draw the line. And generally I would just defer to specialists in that area. But can see the minefield.

Testosterone: Would 100% mean bans for some XX women.
Any Y chromosome at all: Would 100% mean bans for some people who are Barr Body positive as some people still have Y chromosone (XXY)... when no advantage at all from the science and well, yeh, they are basically identical to any other "normal" woman.
Anyone XY? But some really dont get an advantage from the science. Some seemingly do.

And then do we test men and ban all XXY, XYY and XXYY men too. And men with higher testosterone levels aha, since it is an advantage too? If we define it as only XX women and XY men being allowed to compete in sports?

I just dont know...

Maybe the XY testosterone test is the mid-ground, that is what it used to be... but yeh, the science there said that only some events would get an advantage. And then ofc get into the whole testosterone suppression stuff.

The IBA banned them for testing that was specific, but not testosterone. Seems like chromosone testing. It is one thing to question whether competition is fair amongst differing traits, it is another to allow hand to hand combat.

Which lends to the thought that the drug tests should be performed naked and then we'll know for sure

I mean... it has not even been confirmed if she is XY... or XX with high testosterone.

Also, she has fought for years. And is not even powerful for a female boxer! She can hardly KO anyone and has been beaten loads of times. In almost 50 fights and 37 wins...

she as actually never had a single "proper" KO.

2x Ret (including today)
3x RSC (Ref stopped count)

There is a nuanced discussion in this area. But people are acting like this is prime Mike Tyson as opposed to a boxer who relies on her speed and reach and does not have much power.

That is not how XX/XY/XXY works.

Your partner could be XXY or even XY and you would probably never know! They would probably never know.

Heck YOU could be XXY or XYY and might not know, so could I... or anyone!

Having watched enough international sports in my life, and I'm not trying to be controversial or be a troll but the first time I saw a noted WNBA player then in college. I said to a sportscaster buddy at the time "that's a man"

I'm dubious about some of what has been presented as "female" from time to time

Maybe they either should have invested a few more euros or um, I don't know, done a better job?
Nah, they should had picked a different venue, period. Seine waters are cleaner than they have ever been (thus no one can say 1.4bil was wasted), but 1-2 days of rain ruined their sewage tank approach/limits, because it was an uphill battle to begin with.

The proper question is whether they had a plan B. I refuse to believe that, given the Seine situation, they did not. Probably it ended up with stubborn ''we CAN do the swim part here, as we promised''.

People like rules only when the rules suit their personal agenda. I am not judging the process of changing sex, or those who who feel they do not want a traditional definition. I will draw the line at hand to hand combat for the sake of sport. There has to be a rule that defines the sees, and People have to abide by it, no matter how they self identify.

She hasnt changed sex... and she is not "self-identifying", and almost certainly would be seen as a "woman" in day-to-day life.

I mean, there is a decent chance going off what has been released that she is XX and simply had higher testosterone levels. Since the XY thing is unconfirmed. (and you can be female and XY, XXY or a mosaic! Heck, some people with those traits can have children! you could be married to one and would never know.)

There are rules. The argument is where the line is. Because if testosterone is the line? Then a lot of XX women could be ruled as "not women" too. The IOC do have quite extensive rules in this area that have been quite harsh at times and have some scientific basis.

I do think it is funny that the first time any of this came up in her 5 year boxing career was at an ITA event after she had beaten two Russian athletes... including Russia's top female "hope" in the division! Maybe a coincidence ofc.

It is a nuanced area and some cases... yeh... there is clear "Unfairness" (albeit they are few and far between where very clear-cut)... but put it this way... without a specific test? There is no way to know for sure if YOU (I assume you are male) are XY either.

I mean, to show how nuanced all this is... the first ever woman banned for failing a gender test... well, during the Olympics she missed what did she do? Oh, had a baby.
