9.5 is quite a bit for him. I think he's a star but that's a bit much. He'll probably ask for 10+ considering what Matthews/Marner are making though. I wouldn't mind around 8.5x8, but I think he asks for more.

Somebody tell that guy Matthews isn't even eligible to re-sign until July 1st
Is he eligible to agree to new deal?

You know agents. 8.5 per is the "starting" point for negotiations so who knows what they really want though.

No agent sets their starting point below their ask though. They start high. If 8.5 is high starting point that’s a big win for us

Unfortunately it’s unlikely anyone knows the status of those negotiations

True.

I'm guessing it's their way of using Forsberg as a comparable and then taking it from there.

Was reading that his agent's starting point is the Filip Forsberg deal as comparison.

8 years/$68 million
I feel like that was his ask last time round that resulted in him sitting out. If he is willing to take take that deal I think it would be a fairly easy negotiation. I cannot believe it would be that easy. Nothing with them is.

$9M x 7 is a fair number IMO based on Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Point and Ranta. At $9.5M I am asking him who are on his no trade list and saying the club will try to accommodate his destination but there is no need to wait until July 1st. It doesn't matter what the other 2 are making. He was 19th in forward scoring this year and an 8 year deal takes him well into the typical declining years for a player. Unless Matthews comes up with something stupid like $14.5 x 3 then Willie can have his minor overpay and we see if he can play center.

Dreger said today the Leafs want to keep the band together but that they will need to creative with the math.

Let's see if Treliving can do a better job of getting creative than Dubas.

Treliving actually has some cap space to work with so we will see.

And since he has been our best forward in each of the last three playoffs this team must have some serious problems then..
Comparing pee to poo isn't really saying much. He's not Patty Kane or Pavelski out there.

Reilly was more valuable is typically more valuable in the playoffs and he gave a good deal to the team.

If the core 4 wants to shake the narrative, their cap hits need to come down to the rest of the team.

I don't see Nylander as holding back at all... he's grown and got better every year a player... I'd try offering him 8 x 9.6 per year on a long term deal

Tavares on the otherhand is clearly on the downswing and looks like a borderline beer leaguer 5 v 5
I think we'd all like JT gone but that's a tough one to move unless you eat salary hard. ANd JT has to cooperate.

8 x 9.6 for Willy? Hmmmmm. I think I still walk. QUOTE="Jamason, post: 190686080, member: 306167"]
The scary part is that his 70% (which I don't believe) was the best on the team, except for Rielly.

I've always not been a fan of Willy. Mostly because I think his contract set the tone for this entire train wreck. It was foreseeable. But I'll eat my crow where I thought his laziness would be perpetual fitness wise. He not only proved me wrong there he went full jacked mode. So credit where due.

Willy is a very good hockey player. But he's not willing to put it all on the line to win. Imho. And he's gonna ask for 10 mil guaranteed.

If I ran a team.. I wouldn't pay a guy like Willy 10 mil. Someone will though. And he may very well be worth it. But the damage is done here.

Man it’s going to be a long few years.

Fixed. Nobody needs to give a discount, just don't expect to reset the market again.

There is a huge difference .. Willy had a steel industry in Stockholm in family so he lived and lives a very entitled life of flying around in family jet since birth .. Matty, and especially Mitch, come from very financially disadvantaged families and they are trying to develop generational wealth themselves .. my point is Willy's life is not changing because he plays pro hockey (all it does is add to his wealth) and $$$ itself very likely is not a big motivator for him
How do you explain his Dad then?

I think it's more a matter of, does Treliving have the brains and balls to tell Tavares that he is no longer part of the team's future plans and would like him to waive NOT whether Tavares would accept trade because at that point, what choice is there really for him???
