I feel like that was his ask last time round that resulted in him sitting out. If he is willing to take take that deal I think it would be a fairly easy negotiation. I cannot believe it would be that easy. Nothing with them is.
Forsberg was at $6.0M but signed 2 years earlier. The cap inflation adjusted number was around $6.5M. Willie had to come down to the number he finally signed for which was obviously somewhat higher. I expect the Forsberg and Ehlers deals were what the club was using. His agent was the same guy Gaudreau used and Johnny sat out training camp before signing his previous deal.

Agree. Hard to be a Leaf fan right now. Feels very similar to muskoka 5. Management is going to ride or die and the team will have to win in spite of them while hoping some random playoff they come alive and make them right the whole time.

People were cheering for a Dubas firing for change but it is clear now the mandate is from the top to run it back.
Been tough since Dubas took over. I literally didn't watch at all for the last 2 years cause I knew there was no point. I've never not watched my Leafs ever. That's how much I hate this team.

Now that Dubas is gone we can start moving forward again. I'm super excited even though Dubas f***ed us. I missed hockey.

Refused to watch while that clown was still around. I could only watch him waste our AM years for so long. He's wasted the best opportunity this franchise had had in my lifetime. I hate him so much. Lol

Damn man that's nuts. You missed a lot of good hockey. Matthews Hart year will be a highlight of my Leafs fandom for a long time. Until someone does it again or we win a cup prob best I ever felt being a Leafs fan.

I think we'd all like JT gone but that's a tough one to move unless you eat salary hard. ANd JT has to cooperate.

8 x 9.6 for Willy? Hmmmmm. I think I still walk. QUOTE="Jamason, post: 190686080, member: 306167"]
The scary part is that his 70% (which I don't believe) was the best on the team, except for Rielly.
I've always not been a fan of Willy. Mostly because I think his contract set the tone for this entire train wreck. It was foreseeable. But I'll eat my crow where I thought his laziness would be perpetual fitness wise. He not only proved me wrong there he went full jacked mode. So credit where due.

Willy is a very good hockey player. But he's not willing to put it all on the line to win. Imho. And he's gonna ask for 10 mil guaranteed.

If I ran a team.. I wouldn't pay a guy like Willy 10 mil. Someone will though. And he may very well be worth it. But the damage is done here.

I think 1 star and even 2 star clubs can be generous. Its bad business because they make their decisions based on abundant cap space and how they want their best guys to feel. The Eichel deal (current Con Smythe aside) was not based on what he had done or looked like he could do, it was Pegula flexing and trying to show that his guy is close to McDavid so should also be in the $10M club. Then every player that isn't McDavid points to the Eichel deal.

Willie can go somewhere else and maybe get close to $10M because they aren't carrying three other 8 figure contracts. The smart play for the team isn't to get as close to a cap killing number as you can so nobody leaves, its to let some talent go. I like Willie but I also like AM and Mitch. Willie is first out the door for me but I think its really important they sort out who wants the most realistic payday first.

Not only did I have zero faith in Dubas... But I just couldn't stomach his wokeness either. Carting Reilz out for pressers to defend him saying 'Rag it' 😂 and the final straw for be was when he said'unfortunately all our players are white' 😆
Months after me being fumed about trading Kadri.

That's what broke there camels back. I'd been lying if I said I didn't have a big issue with COVID handling by the NHL too. So a bit of an outside factor contributed but we'll call it 98% Kyle. I hate that man with a passion

I'd rather have Willy at 8x 9.5 than Marner at 8 x13-14

There's another level there with willy.....I just don't know if we'll get it out of him here

I don't think Marner has the potential to ask for those kind of numbers. Tree isn't rookie KD and there is no sane argument for Mitch earning more than Pasta who had a year for the ages while carrying a record setting club on his back. They may actually have to let Mitch go to UFA to see what the max value on a 35g winger is, but I think they will work something out.

Willie is interesting in that he has added a bit every year but the number of guys who hit a career best below his age is a lot higher than above his age. 19th in league scoring and an 8 year deal takes him to 36. Maybe he has another gear but maybe he is Seguin 2.0. Without the other high dollar talent its a more acceptable risk but at some point they need to figure out how to afford a #1 D.

Imagine if they ink all 3 of these guys to 8 year deals with NM and we get to watch a typical early 30s decline instead of a dynasty. We can reflect on the good old days when they could afford a Reilly on the defense.

This might be the most ridiculous thing I've read on this site. Thank you.

That's nightmare fuel honestly. Lol.

Tre better address goaltending immediately

I disagree - JT signed before Willy, and for a much larger (and much worse) deal - his contract set the tone for the entire train wreck.

The one thing I never rode Dubas too hard far. Hard to walk away from JT in his position.

But I hear ya.

HHOF is in Toronto?

That's pretty close to the Cup.

Nylander don't need poach off a fricken 60 goal scorer to get his points.

He can go anywhere and score goals, no 2nd assists required.

Just out of curiosity, if Tre brings back the same core. Will you watch the team? Nothing will have changed.

Comparing pee to poo isn't really saying much. He's not Patty Kane or Pavelski out there.

Reilly was more valuable is typically more valuable in the playoffs and he gave a good deal to the team.

If the core 4 wants to shake the narrative, their cap hits need to come down to the rest of the team.
Who do you mean by 'core 4'?

Highest paid? That's AM, JT, MM, and MR (in that order).

Best players? That's AM, MM, WN, and MR (not necessarily in that order).

Best playoff performers? That's MR, WN, and then a big dropoff to whoever.

The only one I genuinely would be pissed if they traded.

He had his gaffs, but the guy skated and worked his ass off while Marner was doing figurines and Matthews looked like Jason Allison against Florida.

JT isn't even worth talking about as it's widely accepted that he is genuinely awful at this point 5 on 5.

So, basically rinse & repeat what Dubas did.
Over half the cap space locked up in the Big Four, then find scraps and reclamation projects for a bottom 6 that come playoff time will get outscored by the opposing team's goalie.
I agree .run it back shanaplan .these guys would have been demolished by Vegas
Let's us Vegas as the BAR now .time to set it higher than Tampa.
If u pay a guy over 10 million make sure he's got the parts to play in June
