I think it's a bit of the Mike Tyson effect. When a team is winning like this and literally on top of every major statistical category, it can have a psychological effect on the opposing team. The Avs lacked structure like it didn't believe in itself.
I don't believe that, I'm sure the Avs know they are a good team and believe in themselves. They didn't start on time and that was compounded by poor goaltending.
IMO, it would have still been a game until Dermott scored that soft one which seemed to break their spirit.

Not to be that guy but if the Avs have an NHL caliber goalie in net this games looks mighty different. A win is a win and I will take it but I’m not going all in until I see they continue to do this in the stretch run and in rounds 1, 2 and 3 if they make it that far or further. Frankly our season doesn’t start until April.

Interesting note from the post game pressers, a few of the interviewees mentioned something about being prepared. That is nice to hear. Clearly this team is looking at their opponents and understanding what they have to do to limit their chances... also sounded like the team was pretty open in acknowledging the first game back after the west coast trip issues that plague so many teams and consciously chose to not allow that to be an excuse...

There is something different about this team, and the way they are approaching things... won't know if it truly matters but from what I read, listen to and watch there is a higher level of awareness and maturity around the group. Hope it makes a difference in the spring but will enjoy it for the next 5 months regardless.

The test will be when they go on the inevitable skid that hits every club.
How they respond and bounce back from that will be the true measure.

They look like the best team in the league right now though.

What a game to be at live! Lots of fun seeing us sore and 8 and seeing Kadri add 2 for the avs!

Hard to say TB was the best team when they can't even win one game in the playoffs.
I rrealize that but its hard to say that powerhouse Columbus was better? Have they been dominating the league since? LOL! Hey I know we won't agree but underdogs can win a series, underdogs cant win a league title over 6 month schedule.

Yeah, I thought the Leafs came out strong and pushed the play for a majority of the 1st period. 2nd period I thought they had a harder time getting out of their own zone and Campbell made a bunch of saves that kept them in the game.

I don't think anyone was feeling sorry for the Leafs when they had to run out Hutchinson and he was letting in the same.

Agree that a win is a win and no team should apologize for that.

Keep hearing the Avs goalie was to blame for the score but how many of the goals dont go in on other goalies? Nylanders goal was a perfect snipe. Matthews 3 goals were all great. Only the Dermott shot that handcuffed him felt soft.

The problem really seemed to be that the Avs couldnt handle the Leafs around the net.

I think Avs fans are overlooking that their goal at the end of the 1st came completely against the run of play and probably gave them undeserved life heading into the 2nd period after we deservedly went up 3-0 with dominating play.

Goaltending was not their biggest problem. Looking at just expected GF and GA, it isn't pretty at all. Accounting for the negative goals above expectation for Johansson, there might be 4 less goals from the leafs but that doesnt even adjust for gamescore. Leafs started easing back from the beginning of the second to Kadri's goal at 8:03 left in the second. Tavares' goal broke their back and their will. The Avs just weren't generating shots. The Avs started on time all right but the leafs were outplaying them.

Yeah that's absolutely true. There is no perfect solution, doing away with the playoffs and just having the regular season decide the title like they do in soccer would be the best probably to determine who's best. If they did that, we'd see a different kind of hockey being played, not quite the intensity of what we see in the playoffs because you just can't keep that up over 82 games (or even 50), but you'd see more intensity than we see now during the season for sure. But as it is now, everyone knows that the playoffs decide the cup, everyone saves themselves for that when they know it's coming, players are rested as the real games approach and when they start, the brand of hockey we see is a different game than what we see up to that point. That's just one more reason that you can't say who wins the Presidents trophy is the best team - nobody is playing their best during the regular season.

Not from where I sat.

Right now everything is going great for the Leafs. No key injuries, no covid issues and a goaltender playing far above than any time in his career. I doubt all this good fortune continues and they come back to earth a bit.

You'd have to think at some point one of those two will arise.

Matthews
Tavares
Mrazek
Mikheyev
Kase

have all been injured.

Leafs have had horrid shooting luck most of the year and their shooting percentage is as far below where it should be as their save percentage is above it.

After last night, it seems they've finally come back to "even" in the luck department:

Wasnt it a joke based on a chirp from another forum? I don't think anyone is being serious here. It's all tongue in cheek.

It was an idiotic chirp but why not take the high road? Responding to stupidity with more stupidity isn't the way I'd choose to go but whatever. Not a big deal, some people found it funny, some people found it stupid, opinions vary, the world keeps turning and hopefully the Leafs will keep on rolling.

There will be adversity sooner or later, no doubt about it. That's why I always try to not get too high when things are going like they are now, and not get too low when things are going badly. We're running good now but it's marathon race that has only just begun.

How does their PDO look over the same period (assuming it is still used as a metrics to measure 'luck')?

There's no need whatsoever to feel shame, we all let our emotions get the best of us sometimes.

I really want 1st overall, I'm going to start scoreboard watching starting now! I already had a peek and I can't be bothered to do the math right now but I think we might pass NYR and be 4th overall already. :DD
Ottawa and Montreal are also going for 1st overall, but for some reason their fans do not seem to be very happy about it.

I wonder if there is something in the water in those cities that is making their hockey fans so b*tchy???
