It would be nice, but then again Presidents trophy winners rarely win the Cup. It however would translate into a lot less rant postings ;) , this place might be a little more bearable.

I mean yeah, only 1/16 teams win the Cup. The field is always a better bet, but there's no downside to home ice and lowest seeded opponents throughout the playoffs.

I read a few posts on the mainboards about us. Seems there are some fans that are trying to put the regular season means nothing, squarely on us. Some tidbits i remember reading, "The reg season doesn't matter to THEM." "The reg season doesn't matter to Toronto." Is this another label we are about to earn?

Regular season does not matter, until it does. Regular season might mean your team finds chemistry between players who've never played together. Regular season means you get to find out what you need to be better. Regular season might mean an easy 1st round opponent. Regular season means something to 1 team every year and nothing for the rest of the teams. Regular season means you figure out which UFA's you are goign to et walk and which ones you are going to try and keep. Regular season means you get to find out how good your drafting and development has been. In some cases regular season means you are close to winning the cup in upcoming years. Regular season means you are playing for a ring or positioning for a pick.

The NHL playoffs are a who is hot right now elimination tournament, who is healthy, who got favorable matchups, not who is the best team. You could say the best team does not always win the cup. Was St. Lou in 2019 really better than TB? Was Carolina in 2006 really better than Detroit?

Yes and that's why many are skeptical about regular season results.
I mean I do get how one would get to the point of not caring about the regular season. But why keep watching games you don't care about? What could you possibly be gaining from consistently watching games that the result means nothing to you from. If all you care about is the playoffs clock in around April when you actually care lol.

I find that 7/35 (20%) isn't too shabby at all for one team out of a possible sixteen. I'd be curious to know how each of the individual placements that comprise the field fare in that regard?

Just ignore the idiots both there and here. If people can't value 2 parts of a sports entertainment package, they should go back to their video games

This idea that we can't enjoy regular season success and be excited/happy with how they've played because of previous years failures is insane lol. Nobody should be happy or excited about anything until their team lifts the cup, am I right ?

I'm happy every game day. Do I want the team to win? Of course! Do I need the team to win? Not really. If I did, I would just read or watch the highlights like half the trolls on these boards.
I do know that for real fans of the game and this team, the party will be 100x greater than everyone else because they already know that each win is worth celebrating and the big wins aren't owed to anybody. I'll be taking week off and hope the bender doesn't kill me.

Ah the mainboards - trying to turn their hypocrisy and horrific takes around and blame it all on leafs fans.

classic.

Who told you not to enjoy regular season success? You do you. But don't tell me how to be a fan or when I should be happy. Only thing that drives me insane is the few posters that go on about how elite this team is - we hear it every year.....then the inevitable excuses when the fold in the playoffs

You should be happy now and be a real fan of this elite team

Well, you are that guy - so wear it and own it if you say it. And no one can do anything bout "playoffs" in November. You can't win a series now.

The other 9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 times "only the playoffs matter" has been said was enough, thank you.

The issue is the media and the homers go off on a game that like this and over-inflate our expectations. Look this team is very talented and if the continue to work as hard as they have been then the sky’s the limit but I still see us having some real issues. Holl is a third pairing D man and Richie has been gawd awful. I’ll reserve judgment on Mrazek but it’s not looking good that he can’t stay healthy.

Myself was pretty bummed out after last years playoffs, not because the loss, but by the boys getting pushed around, not pushing back, and seeming to roll over and play dead. I enjoy the success this year and follow them, but I've not watched nearly as much hockey this season, and probably won't even watch all the playoff games until round 2 starts. I'm obviously still a fan, but I've spent way less time on them. This season is great, but i'm not back yet.

For the majority of HF , and much of this board too - a Leafs victory means nothing but a loss means everything.

A victory does nothing to show that they can win in the playoffs, while the losses highlight what the Leafs lack.

There are even so many other fanbases who still think the Leafs overpaid for 2nd and 3rd liners that we deemed as stars, that Tavares would be the 3rd line center on their team, that our defence is bottom 10 in the league, that our goalie is just an average backup riding a unsustainable hot streak. All because they have not won a series.

A Leafs 1st round victory would throw like 70% of posters on HF in shambles.

Internally yes, but the goalposts will just be moved to continue dumping on them, as usual.

Oh for sure what they promote and type will just be new expectations that they believe this team cannot reach - but internally most will struggle with the concept that the Leafs just aren't some garbage team that lucks itself into the playoffs every year for its annual first round exit.

Please define "real fan"
Someone who articulates joy when the team wins instead of providing excuses why people shouldnt be happy. Seems like a pretty low bar for a team on such a winning streak and sitting around the top of the league.

If that's the definition, I would agree. Though it seems rather narrow.

Blindly cheering for a team?
