All athletes suffer from confidence breakdowns, but for the life of me I can't figure out why it becomes so prolonged or evident with the Leafs top players.

Matthews at least was much better in the second.

He seems like a guy whose feel and pulse for the game is rooted to scoring goals. The goals come easy and the confidence is high. Details slip because the goals come too easy. Then you get out of rhythm and it just snowballs. He’s just not bringing franchise center things reliably at this point.
