Post-Game Talk: Panthers at Rangers

I said this would happen if they gave him more than 5 years. No one saw this happening in year 2. Unbelievable. This is why you don't get superstar money to players who are not superstars.

When he was playing well he was a good package at center. Slap shot, power play quarterback, good vision and pivotal skating. His last year in Dallas before the concussion he looked amazing.

But centers are something you usually have to grow. Bradd wanted to come here which was somewhat unusual, but the top players (Hossa, Kovalchuk, Gaborik) who make it to FA are wingers.

I'm glad Stepan is playing as well as he is.

But he was never a dominating player. He racked up points on the PP and distributing the puck. Just an awful contract.

Agreed which is why even if he does P90x, insanity and crossfit all at once while torching his wine cellar in between reps chased with Barb Underhill boot camp you have to rip off the band aid and buy him out .

I don't know..

I'm willing to give Richards another chance to see if he can "right the ship."

They have at least one more season before they have to buy him out.

Much rather prefer a coaching change and see if that can spark him..

or

He just pouts because Torts is gone and gets worse.

Heck I'd try Hagelin at Center . He uses his speed to Carry the puck the same way Gomez did in his prime . He's probably our best puck mover . I think McD needs to be developed more as a puck mover and when Staal back dial back his ice time . McD can move th puck he's fast like Neidermeir fast ( lacking the vision or stickhandling )
Bottom line team needs to be more fast through NZ and support each other in the middle of the Ice . Every team dumps and chases but it's plan B a lot of times.
I watched the Wild the other day they actually play our same type game but are faster on t fire check and puck and finish their chances . They also have more speed at center ice than us in
Koivu , Cullen and Bouchard

EPIC FAIL

Ive never seen a team dominate possession like the Rangers do, but dont score. That had to be one of the most frustrating 3 periods of hockey ever. Florida scores 3 (one from 100 feet away) without even trying.

This team is having a real tough time this season. I honestly think some of it is just bad bounces. A team like the Devils fire the puck at the net on Tuesday and it goes in off a Ranger. The Rangers threw about 30 pucks to the net last night and all of them go wide or get blocked or saved.

Cant say there was a lack of effort last night. They played a pretty solid 60 minutes for a team playing its 3rd in 4 nights. Gaborik actually played his best game of the season, yet the Rangers had little if anything to show for it on the scoreboard. That one really hurt.

I dont know what else this team can do to be honest. Its not like they played badly. Just not their year imo.

I still maintain that Biron should have been in net for this one. Probably wouldnt have changed the result but, whatever.

I saw it happening in year 2. But I'm generally pessimistic, just the way this team has made me ;)

Seriously, I hate when forwards play the point on the PP.

I hate the goalie pull. I always have.

Every coach in the league was going to make that call.

No. You never pull the goalie while you're on the PP. It means the opposing team cannot ice the puck, meaning there's no risk at trying for an EN goal. It's basically inviting the other team to score on you.

When you pull the goalie while at even strength, the risk of icing the puck, makes opponents more careful and less likely to try for an EN goal.

The lack of creativity and finding quality scoring chances is absurd.

When I watch other teams its like they are playing a completely different sport offensively. I've never seen a team work against itself as often as this team.

SO anemic offensively. Its very hard to stomach, not entertaining at all.

If Lundqvist has to make 4 or 5 huge saves a night, and still let in 2 or 3 during the course of the game - then you might as well open it up anyway. Maybe theyll be some 4-5, 5-6 losses but at least it will be a little entertaining.

I cant remember the last time the Rangers scored 6 or 7. Is this team even capable of that?

Yep, and I hate how soft our team is. No one wants to engage physically. Literally, no one. Kreider tried to start something. Boyle and Miller skated over slowly to help a little bit. It's just dis-heartening.

How much time was left when they pulled Henrik? a minute? With a PP?

Listen, the Rangers needed all the help they could get. Having a 6 on 4 was a risk but the lack of finish out there forced the issue imo. To me it was poor execution on the ice by the players using the two man advantage. Not to mention putting themselves in that position against FLORIDA in the first place.

The PP looked much better when Richards wasn't on it. People defer to him too much when he's out there, and when he's making bad plays the whole unit suffers as a result. He just seems to be dragging people down with him. It's painful to watch him out there.

I love how Michelletti kept mentioning how young Florida's D was and how if you keep pressuring them they'll make a mistake.

Im still waiting for that mistake Joe....

I agree.

I have no problem with the 6 on 4, but you DON'T send it to the point for a point shot, you get it down low where you out man the defenders and get them out of position. Instead they did the obvious and it was over before it even started.

Seriously. It is painful. I want to pull my hair out watching him sloupe around out there. Getting closer and closer to ending the talk of "when Richards gets his game back".

Sorry folks, its over. Nothing he does shows me that his game is on any kind of upswing. Not even a flash here or a flash there that would lead you to think that. Its pretty ****ing sad.

We do not have the team built for Torts' style of grinding hockey. I firmly believe this team is built to play more off the rush, and until Torts realizes that and adapts we're gonna be struggling to score and win.

you mean the telegraphed slap shot, directly at a defender wasn't a good choice on the 6-4?

Yep, was going to mention that. First thing i thought when the puck went into the empty net was, where was the point man in the middle of the ice to disrupt that shot? He was on the far boards. The other 4 players were down low. Get the puck down to THEM. This team is so predictable.

If they wanted to run the play from the top, use an umbrella of 3 point men so that shot/clear from FLA isnt taken.

I did, Go back and read my posts when we signed this guy. Although I may have said by year 3. Everyone here killed me on that.

1. we must be the worst team in the nhl at getting shots on net from the point.

2. we're a shot blocking team that ends up letting in tons of deflating deflection goals.

I believe thats one of the reasons why Nash's play has fallen off. He needs the puck in open space with speed to do what he does. It would benefit Richards and Gaborik as well (dare I say).

Come to think of it, Hagelin is great in open space too. Stepan can pass off the rush and Kreider can fly... hmmm .. maybe you've got something there. ;)

Re: Richards, it's a move you make ten out of ten times. A gifted center (enough with the 'superstar' stuff, it's ridiculous trying to debate who is and who isn't, there are three legitimate game changers in the NHL - Crosby, Malkin, Kovalchuk) hitting free-agency is an anomaly. It shouldn't happen. If you're lucky enough to have him fall into your lap, and you can do it without absolutely decimating your cap situation, you do it. Richards only looks bad now because of the new cap-recapture. If the previous CBA just rolled forward, or if the current CBA didn't have the cap recapture, he's fine. He's playing poorly now, but he's the kind of player you'd bank on having a rebound just because the body of his work, and, also, because the strengths of his game are minimized in the system in which we play. Unless there's a stretch of his career I missed, he was never a "set up in the corner" center, he's always been a carry in and pass off the rush player.

The moves we should regret is something like Nash (not because it's Nash, but because we were more or less set on the wing and we hurt our center depth) or letting skilled bottom-6 players walk (like Prospal). If you're going to play in free-agency, overpayment is expected. If you can get a 1 or 1A center in free agency, you can't second guess yourself.
