Lots of people in Russia bashing Putin, some openly, some behind closed doors. But if you're not a loud influential voice no one would really care. Sorry if it sounds that boring and not as exciting as some anti-utopian movie or a book about fighting against totalitarian regimes. To kill or arrest Panarin's parents would be the most dumb stereotypical movie villain thing to do. Absolutely evil and pointless. Nothing to gain, lots to lose.
I don't know much about Panarin's actual parents but he's very close with his grandparents, especially Grandad. And I'm pretty sure he wouldn't go anywhere from Russia even if Artemi really wanted that. Especially not to the US. But maybe he'll force them to leave, who knows. If Putin is actually that stupidly and pointlessly evil as you all think.
Read his biography recently. The guy is a thug and pretty damn evil.

With the way this all seems to be shaking out, this can’t be a long term thing can it? It seems pretty straightforward that the story is BS. How long will Panarin need to be away to set things straight?

A well-positioned source with knowledge of the political dynamic in Russia told The Post that this spurious attack against the 29-year-old native of Korniko was not a direct retaliatory governmental measure against Panarin but rather Nazarov going rogue.

It is believed Nazarov, who has been extremely critical of Panarin’s opposition to Putin, was attempting to curry favor with the Russian Ice Hockey Federation and its First Vice President, Roman Rotenberg, whose family has close ties to Putin.

"Brooks is a hack who doesn't break anything and got beat up at the bus stop."

Brooks has been pretty f***ing on top of things lately, IMO. And he also writes columns about the coach that our other, more lauded beat reporters would never dream of publishing.

I feel like if Putin is doing this, they’re going to have to be smuggled out. If Putin wants his family dead, they’ll be killed. In retrospect, Panarin should have gotten them all out far sooner. As for now, he’s in a tough spot. I’d totally get if he took the rest of the season off to explore all diplomatic avenues to get them out safely. Sucks, but it is what it is.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. Killing an athlete's family is excessive and unnecessary. But there are many other ways to harm someone's family. Maybe one day his grandmother is doing groceries and she gets mugged, maybe their bank accounts get frozen without reason. Is it likely something like this could happen? Probably not, but there is at least the possibility, and if you are any type of family man that is enough to put the fear of God into you.

Yes, he probably should have gotten them out sooner, but, maybe that was very difficult. For all you know his grandparents wanted to stay in Russia. Older generation Russians can be very stubborn (I know, because I come from a Russian family) and there is a very good chance they wanted to stay, despite the greener pastures that were available in the US. Every family situation is different, and I'm sure that there are reasons why his family has stayed in Russia up to this point.

I'm just so sick of NY sports. How do other cities manage to avoid all the nonsense that the Jets, Mets, Knicks, and Rangers seem to get themselves into.
I'm in the same boat as you with teams but I guess a fan of Giants, Yanks, Isles and Nets don't have the same drama? (Maybe they do and I don't pay attention to them.)

I'am from Russia. Yes, that's right!

The NHL shedule is chaotic; at least it is hockey in 2021 is my thoughts and a bonus. So this news is not good.

You can't be serious.

I'm American and travel to Russia once a year for work. It's thoroughly different than how it's portrayed here.

Putin isn't a nice fellow, but he's not the demigod caricature as he's portrayed in this country. Things aren't black and white. There's a huge grey area; an area that only can be understood by experiencing how a place works, what's feasible and what isn't. Worrying about Panarin's safety is just stupid. There's no need to do as such.

My wife just said "your boy Panarin is taking a leave of absence". I'm like WTF happened now? Do we have any idea how long he will be gone? Are we talking weeks or months or nobody knows right now?

So why the leave of absence?

Safety issues?

Better question, if this did happen why would he take a leave of absence? If it did happen then the only reason he'd take a leave of absence is he were forced by the Rangers. The Rangers came out in support of him. And it wasn't just vanilla nonsense, it was strong support.

No I get it. But with the story unraveling, it’s looking more and more like this is a giant nothing burger. There’s gotta be more to the story.

Don't you think if it were true it would be the Rangers giving him a leave of absence? But the Rangers have strongly supported him.

so we lost our top scoring forward and top scoring defenseman to politics. This rebuild is falling apart fast. Do we have any other political activists on the team?

DeAngelo wasn't removed from the team because of politics. Gorton was very clear about that.

He was removed from the team because he started an altercation with a teammate after receiving a final warning

And you completely misread what I said. I was talking about his family, not Panarin, and I said it was unlikely anything would happen to them, but it also wouldn't be shocking if something did. And if you are Russian, that's enough doubt scare you about the wellbeing of your family.

And good for you that you go on a business trip to Russia. I guess, you the American, know more about my home country than me. Let me fill you in on something, your experience as a tourist is far different than what people who live in the country deal with on a consistent basis.

Just to give you an idea, I lived in China for 5 years, and would say the same thing as you, people's perceptions of the country are blown way out of proportion. From my point of view it is one of the safest places and as an expat I actually felt an incredible amount of freedom there to do whatever I wanted. Nevertheless, every now and then you would hear odd stories about local and government interactions that is hard to believe to be true given my own interactions in the country. Being a foreigner in these authoritarian countries you live in a bubble.

That poster isn't wrong. Nothing will happen to Panarin's family. Believing that something *could* happen to them is not rooted in reality and is a reflection of hysterics, stereotypes and ignorance. Panarin is an athlete, not a spy or some journalist exposing sensitive info. Sweet Jesus.

Like Ive said before, people crap on Putin all the time. It's no big deal. Whatever. The biggest push-back isn't from the government but the hoards of mindless Putin supporters who'll question your patriotism.

I mean, the leave is most likely due to the fact that this blindsided him and his life has been turned upside down — both here and especially in Russia — and needs some time to process, figure things out, etc. Why does it need to be anything more that? :dunno:

Agree. If this happened in America he wouldn't have left the team. But this occurred half-way across the globe. And it's splattered all over the sports media. This was some serious character assassination stuff by Nazarov.

I'm thinking Panarin will come home to deal with this, or at least take some time to plan a thorough PR response. Perhaps get in contact with old teammates and/or Latvian police to back him up.

If unfounded, this level of personal slander cannot be ignored and should be countered in a swift manner..
