I feel like if Putin is doing this, they’re going to have to be smuggled out. If Putin wants his family dead, they’ll be killed. In retrospect, Panarin should have gotten them all out far sooner. As for now, he’s in a tough spot. I’d totally get if he took the rest of the season off to explore all diplomatic avenues to get them out safely. Sucks, but it is what it is.
Jesus. Holy Overreaction Batman!
I get that Putin is just a real life comic book supervillain for most of the Western people but come on. What's the point of killing Panarin or his family? Nevermind. Don't bother.

I'm not a Putin supporter in the least btw. Quite the opposite actually. But this is just another extremum.

So it safe to say the Rangers might implement some sorta a strict social media guideline after this..right? If they haven’t already.

I don't wanna steer this into a bad place but Caleb Maupin is a Nazbol.

Sparknotes version, that means economically socialist and socially...well, you know what Naz stands for.

So that tells you about him.
Haha, bruh, when I saw that website and the quotes about leftists and liberals and everything else, I was like...I need to ask Machinehead what this is all about.

(To everyone else, this isn't meant in a bad way; @Machinehead just knows a lot about political theory and all that.)

Nazarov was brought up in that piece, so Nazarov is the originator of this accusation not Maupin.
Yeah but what the f*** is U.K. NGO "Diplomatic Debates"? Where did Maupin dig this out from?

According to the U.K. NGO "Diplomatic Debates," Nazarov told Russian media: “I had to rescue Artemi, otherwise he would have been prosecuted to the full extent of the law… Artemi had to be rescued for a bribe.”

I have spent many nights on HF and many nights making fun of Maupin.

I never thought I would do both at the same time, but here we are!

I think they should offer some instruction on responsible social media use, understanding the repercussions and all that. I actually would expect the NHLPA to do that as well. No different than offering stuff on financial planning and responsible spending and all that. Social media can be ruinous.

That said, I don't think teams would try to be too restrictive, as there'd be lots of pushback on that from fans and players alike.

I don't think much would prevent Panarin from publicly sharing his anti-Putin sentiments, though, and I don't really think the team should try.

A well-positioned source with knowledge of the political dynamic in Russia told The Post that this spurious attack against the 29-year-old native of Korniko was not a direct retaliatory governmental measure against Panarin but rather Nazarov going rogue.

It is believed Nazarov, who has been extremely critical of Panarin’s opposition to Putin, was attempting to curry favor with the Russian Ice Hockey Federation and its First Vice President, Roman Rotenberg, whose family has close ties to Putin.

That's what I thought at first but then this Maupin piece days before Nazarov's interview and his clear ties with RT made me suspicious.

The better question is what is Panarin's family doing in Russia still and why did Panarin put them in danger this way? Panarin knows what Putin is and what he can do. Obviously Putin is just using Panarin's family to get his revenge on Panarin, he wants to kill or jail all opposition.

You have some obscure knowledge. Your knowledge of Maupin is nerdier than your knowledge of fancy stats.
I am definitely a nerd about politics! Among other things.

Maupin is semi-known because he's a meme and everyone dunks on him. He's in this weird sort of sect politically where you alienate anybody who's not that specific thing.

And also because he's a weasel and often attempts to mischaracterize people, as we can all see now.

Why would anyone in the UK care about some Russian hockey player allegedly hitting a woman?
Looks like some vague made up source that no one would bother to proof check. Nazarov said A LOT of not very pleasant things about Panarin over the last few years which were always a lively topic for discussion on sports related websites. But I don't remember him saying anything like that about Panarin to Russian media before like this alleged UK source says according to Maupin.

I wouldn't call him a supervillain. I don't give a shit about him. I'm American. I have no Russian connection whatsoever, though I do have Russian ancestry. Panarin is Russian. He isn't an American citizen and he has family there. You underestimate how different things are over there. It might not be as extreme as China, but their government has a lot of power. If he's not concerned about his family, then it's pointless for him to take a LOA. The fact he's intimidated, "shaken", says a lot.

I just hope Panarin learned a valuable lesson. If he's gonna get political, then tie any loose ends related to Russia and stay out. See if he can get an extended stay or become a citizen of here or Canada or whatever.

Lots of people in Russia bashing Putin, some openly, some behind closed doors. But if you're not a loud influential voice no one would really care. Sorry if it sounds that boring and not as exciting as some anti-utopian movie or a book about fighting against totalitarian regimes. To kill or arrest Panarin's parents would be the most dumb stereotypical movie villain thing to do. Absolutely evil and pointless. Nothing to gain, lots to lose.
I don't know much about Panarin's actual parents but he's very close with his grandparents, especially Grandad. And I'm pretty sure he wouldn't go anywhere from Russia even if Artemi really wanted that. Especially not to the US. But maybe he'll force them to leave, who knows. If Putin is actually that stupidly and pointlessly evil as you all think.

Putin can make it look like an accident
