Rumor: Pagnotta: "Rasmus Andersson is open to a trade, he would welcome it" It would cost 3 assets...1st rnd pick, prospect, +

You can't extend Andresson until July this summer. Maybe you already know that.

How many teams would make the trade now... but get assurance from Andersson that he is very much interested in extending?
If you're not already a contender, you run into the Ottawa Chychrun dilemma. You trade a nice package for a guy because you think you're getting pretty close, but you don't take a step forward and then you're selling for pennies on the dollar before he can walk. A team like Montreal, for instance, would need to be VERY CAREFUL about making an aggressive move at this time.

Any inkling on whether Weegar might move or waive his NTC if they asked?

I'd sooner try to trade for Weegar if it was remotely possible. He's only got 6 years left at a lower contract number and he will be 37 when the deal expires.

With Andersson, if you trade for him and sign him you're basically committing for 9 years (1 year left plus 8 year extension) at a higher number than Weegar. He would also be 37 when that 8 year extension expires.

I'm personally liking Andersson more (I like his skating and overall game) but I have thought about what you said as well. Basically 9.5 years (if traded now) with the first 1.5 years being very good and then the next 8 being what? $8M or more? That would take him to age 37 like Weegar

Weird that Andersson would "welcome a trade" why doesnt he want to stay long term in Calgary?

Pagnotta says he has been open to getting traded for a couple of seasons now...

Why is buffalo trading Byram? Don't think he'll resign?
Well I'm not sure yet that he will start next season in Buffalo. There were rumors that he will be looking for a 1D role and PP1 time, that is not happening in Buffalo. Maybe it's just agent play or something.

Buffalo should be all over it. Byram + 1st + a prospect. Byram is from Calgary. Andersson pairs with Dahlin and makes the Rasmus squared pair.
Maybe others can chime in but is the gap between Andersson and Byram really a 1st and a prospect?

Yeah wouldn’t do it for me, don’t love the depth of the draft this year. I’d be fine with a later first and a grade A prospect in a position we need more than a first 10 picks higher
Teams don't trade grade A prospects, unless you have a REALLY low definition of a grade A prospect

Habs have a lot to work with. Our pool is deeper than the Sens. Go look at our draft power since 2018. It's almost historic. People can laugh at that all they want... it's some really high amount of picks for more than just 3 draft years. Montreal Canadiens Draft History at hockeydb.com

I do understand where you are coming from though. But there is a 7/8 year age spread between Suzuki and Demidov and I feel that's where we will focus on. We will need to have some vets mixed in because Gallagher, Anderson, Savard, Armia days are numbered. Andersson fills a RD hole and a improvement over Matheson. I will admit... I'm very surprised the Hutson/Matheson pairing is looking very good (so far)

We have two needs (RD and C) and they are greedy needs. Most Habs fans will say the RD is a bigger need than C and that is fair. Hage looks good but he is years away. We got time to see how good Dach is and we might try Demidov at center.

Habs can trade our 1st, Newhook, and Kapanen and still be left with...
* Flames/Panthers 1st
* Two 2nd round picks
* Demidov
* Hage
* Reinbacher
* Beck
* Roy
* Fowler
* Mailloux
* Engstrom

These are only the top end of our pool. I'm not even listing the ones who have an outside shot at making it.

Could be his way of giving the franchise notice that he doesn't intend to re-sign and hang around for the rebuild. If so, that's a solid thing to do.

Andersson is better than Byram but I don't know that I'd add much on top of Byram for Andersson straight up due to age and contract differences.

Andersson is a UFA after next year while Byram is a RFA with 3 years of control left.

What rebuild?

Flames are not rebuilding with Huberdeau, Weegar, Kadri, Backlund, Coleman on the roster. They will do a quick retool. Andersson seems young enough to be part of that.

and Pagnotta says its been a couple of seasons now that Andersson would welcome a trade..

Why does he seem eager to want out? I thought he was one of the lifers in CGY as he was drafted and developed by the team.

Yeah, the super quick re-tool where they traded a top six centre, two top 4 dman, a starting goalie, and didn’t replace any of them and kept 20 million of cap space. The Flames should be a bottom ten team but goalies and hustle are keeping them high.

Doesn't want to be part of a rebuild or retool after he got his taste at being a contender with the Flames a few years back. Flames had a pretty good team before Tkachuk and Gaudreau derailed it all. Andersson was a big part of it and wants to win.

From the Leafs Id do 2026 1st + Danford+ 2025 2nd + cap going back for Andersson. Probably not enough but I think that may be the most the Leafs can realistically pay.
