In a bubble sure, it could end up being bunch of middling assets for a good one. This would have been the thought when Leafs traded for Carlo/Kessel too FYI.

But when you're a team that has to:

1) nerf Hutson by playing him offside as RD in the playoffs and risk him getting crushed at a higher rate by having Struble panic pass him puck on the boards to his backhand. Its a statical fact he's much less effective offside but they have no choice since he's better than anyone else.

2) have your 4th liner Evans as your 2nd line C...for most of the playoffs. Suzuki gets hurt, no one is there to help out. They have no one reliable as a 2nd C to help Demidov.

Makes no sense to go all in on Knies with the above issues. It would be the mistake that Leafs made giving JT a mega contract with Matthews and Kadri as their top 2 C but mixed in with the Kessel type move where you load up your divison rival with futures. Leafs saved Habs if this rumour is true, would he the first time Habs management ignored a true need for fill a not as pressing one.
who’s team are you on ?

Team this offer is bad for Montreal's future team building.
if knies has no concussion or knee issues he would be a great pickup . 23 year old top line power forward is needed in the top 6 . the right d we’re looking for can be a 4-5 guy because we already have 4 guys being paid as top 4 . as for a 2c we’re better off being patient with newhook and hage developing until something shakes loose because right now there are no viable options .
thomas is staying in st.louis
petterson is to soft / overpaid
matthews would cost to much , be to expensive and wouldn’t come anyway .
larkin will be staying south of the border and according to red wing fans he’s no leader / team player .
if some reasonable 2c option became available we could still package hage , prospects , players . the 2c will be the last piece of the puzzle but right now he’s not there . maybe macdavid in two years .

If MTL are offering a big time offer for Knies I am sure they'll listen.

It seems like people love to shit on Treliving, but Knies makes sense for MTL. Doesn't picks and prospects make sense for TOR no matter who the GM is?

It could make sense for Toronto, it all depends on what the plan is. With the first overall, there are like 3-4 different directions they could decide to go

He hasn't gotten over 70 points yet. His overall numbers were awful last year. He also didn't look like he was trying.

I'm not trading the equivalent of four 1st round picks for Knies.

I'd rather get whatever Matthews is now for that price!

There were 24 wingers who put up 70+ points last year. So I would say that 70+ points isn't a great marker for top line winger.

so at that math there would have been at least 8 teams (25%) of the league who did not have a 70 pt winger . could be a shortage of those guys .

He played through a knee injury all season, and he’s also 23 years old. Berube destroyed whatever offence we were generating.

That’s fine - he’s not going to be a Hab as that clearly passed. We’ll see how he does next year.

Matthews is not getting moved, and it would be for a lot more than the rumoured Knies deal if he was.
You'll never get that much for Matthews.

If you trade the current Matthews, don't expect an insane haul. He isn't a 50 goal scorer anymore until he proves otherwise.

You would if he didnt have a NMC.
Maybe. I guess it depends how he looks next year with the new coach and McKenna.

Two years in a row I bet on him and he's been mid as f*** each time. Whether it's a lingering injury or the coach, we'll find out I guess.

trading for matthews this year could be extremely risky because you would not be able to get an extension done with him . and matthews doesn’t strike me as the type who would wanna test free agency to maximize his contract dollars .(sarcasm here)

May want to pump the brakes on the Marner hapiness.Your a Montreal fan you should know. He racked up points against the pillow fight Pacific in the first two rounds and Colorado simply fell apart from the beating they from Dallas and Minny. Yet Marner is a clearing over the glass away from crumbling give it time as Vegas is playing a healthy team now.
This aged poorly.

Knies has an excellent contract and can play top line so I get the idea of it being "We're upgrading what Zharovsky could possibly be and getting a guy now" and he allows Slafkovsky to stay on the second line with Demidov. I don't hate the idea. I just don't think it's real.
Agree with this 100% but it would be extremely interesting if it went down.

I'm hoping there is a ton of action this summer.

Wow, no wonder Toronto wanted him. This Zharkovsky guy was BORN to be a Leaf.
