Kent Hughes expressed there was a big trade that almost happened and it will be revisited in the summer.

Pagnotta expressed the trade was agreed on by both teams: Knies to Montreal for Zharovsky, prospect and TWO first round picks. Hit a snag last minute at the deadline.

Knies has an excellent contract and can play top line so I get the idea of it being "We're upgrading what Zharovsky could possibly be and getting a guy now" and he allows Slafkovsky to stay on the second line with Demidov. I don't hate the idea. I just don't think it's real.

Could just throw money at Tuch and save the assets.

Get rid of Gallagher's contract and attach an asset and send him to Van.

Insane price to pay imo

It is. I'd probably still do it though. Knies next to Demidov would be fantastic. Only problem is getting a 2C because I'm not sure they can afford to wait on Hage and hope he pans out with a much like this.

I assume the prospect was a dman - and if it was Reinbacher or Engstrom - that's an even crazier price ....
I don't think Hughes is that dumb.

That's my thinking too. From what Friedman said back at the deadline it was Hughes who walked away not Treliving.

Montreal is a very good team and Knies would make them even better. Both of the 1sts would be late 1sts.

Zharkovsky is an excellent propect.

I would think the additional prospect would have to be an excellent prospect as well for it to make sense as the late 1sts are less valuable than people think.

Now that also become very pricey for Montreal. I don't imagine either team does that.

With that said, if it was Zharkovsky, Hage, and two 1sts, the Leafs would be crazy not to take that and Montreal would probably be crazy to offer that.

Add in that Treliving has thankfully been fired. I imagine any momentum around this is in the past at this point. Also, Pagnotta is a hack.

Not insane at all.

Considering an over-the-hill John Carlson returned a mid-1st+ as an expiring contract, Knies' value at the deadline strictly as a rental was probably a 1st + good prospect.

And he's still got a significant amount of value this summer as a 60-80P power winger signed for 4 more years at an attractive cap hit, so if he were traded now he'd get Zharovsky + 1st at least.

Would have been a very fair price to pay for Knies.

Things changed when Tre got canned and Toronto won 1 st overall . Pretty low credibility here in general but lends credence to Knies elevated price tag if there is any truth at all ( which again big time doubt ) .
