Owen Sound Attack 2024-25 Season Thread, Part II

I don't disagree personally but DeGray said it would play out in September on Attack Rap(for what that's worth). I think, just speculation on my part, they want everyone back from pro camps before they make any moves. However unlikely it may be, George has been stellar in the AHL and could potentially threaten a spot in the NHL as the back up(or at the very least, earn an extended stay in camp before being sent back). I think it makes sense to wait unless George is the one they deal. Might be an indication that Dale thinks he could get better value at the end of the pre-season once it's clear teams need a goalie.

Just thinking out loud, the Attack's top goalie prospect is now likely Eli Winters who is committed to the USNTDP which I believe would keep him for two years. If the plan was to deal Bennett in the offseason and potentially George at the deadline, the Attack would have no obvious replacement to back up Koprowski without bringing back a goalie in trade. Probably a minor complication in the grand scheme of things though.

I would guess that that in itself is a hint to the future. I don't see Bennett actually leaving after next year, I've read way to much online that most of these commitments will be pushed back. And honestly, if you are a goalie and potentially NHL drafted goalie, you are not leaving the CHL where you are playing 40 games to be a backup and play 5-10 games in the NCAA.

I assume that the Attack are operating under the through that they will have both Bennett and Koprowski for two more years at least, hence why they drafted a goalie who may be 2 years away.

Just a guess but it seems to be where everything is going. Even Mason Roy and Michael Dec who is suppose to leave in 2 years, Im not sure it will play out that way.

Jackman drafted in the first round of the USHL draft.

The Attack don't hold a rookie camp in summer. Jackman has indicated he will attend training camp .
Probably the "Plan B". To my understanding, he has to sign an A card to play as a 16 year old being an American. If he has the upside they talked about in the live draft(see time stamped video link below) but lacks the consistency I think Owen Sound is the perfect spot for him next year. The Attack coaching staff have a pretty clear standard of play and I think they can work on that. If he's not playing the way he needs to, as we saw last year, he'll be rotated out of the lineup. I thought that was one of the strengths last season was keeping guys involved and rewarding guys who earn it.

Between last years draft, trades for 07s & 08s, and this years draft, I think the Attack have an exciting young team with lots to build around.

Owen Sound Attack CHL Import draft slots listed below. Confirmed to be three imports and picks can be traded but have to be confirmed two days prior to the draft.

In what's already been a bizarro-world season with the NCAA rule change, the import draft change feels honestly just as crazy.

My big concern is that this will make the rich richer. Looking at last year's import draft, a lot of teams got nothing from it, or got players who didn't work out as hoped (like us). The imports that did work out were by and large recruited by the big clubs (Windsor, London).

Perhaps the NCAA rule change and the flood of talented Americans (and previously NCAA bound Canadians) makes the CHL more attractive for European kids, but I'd be kind of surprised if that benefits Owen Sound. We could be drafting three new imports this summer, there's almost no chance that we'll be able to add three imports that are better than what we have domestically or returning from last season... We'll be lucky if we get one.

But I've also been a big 'give Varosyan a chance' guy so maybe this helps the decision to bring him back.

Some good points made for sure but only time will tell us the answers. I would agree that the changes would theoretically create some imbalance towards the wealthier teams. How does the trading of picks factor into it all? That seems to be an interesting wrinkle.

So many unknowns still to figure out at this point and we may not know the totality of the effects of the changes of the NCAA eligibility for some time. In the immediate, the Attack have benefited with some talent becoming available to them that wouldn't have otherwise been but maybe they lose out at the tale end of that with kids leaving early to go to school? I could see the team's competitive window playing a bit more of a factor in those decisions.

I did read an article that mentioned recruitment had been surprisingly more difficult than initially expected due to older players not meeting the academic requirements to go the NCAA route. I would expect kids tailor their academics in a way that leaves that door open moving forward.

I'm in the same boat as you on Varosyan. I'm not sure it makes sense to pick three new imports in the same draft. Maybe he doesn't make the cut in camp with the forward depth for next year but I think with the late birthday it would be worth it to let it play out. Personally, I'd take a forward with the first pick and grab a D with the second. I think impact forward is probably a bigger need than D in the pipeline currently with Roy and Kwajah coming in.

Of the players added into the organization's pipeline this year so far, the two I'm most intrigued by is Jackman and Sykora. Jackman sounds like he could be a heck of a get if he sorts out the inconsistency in his game. His size at 16 is intriguing and may make the adjustment quicker to the OHL level. Just my opinion but the Attack coaching staff and the team's style of play seems well positioned for his development. Sykora coming in adds an immediate upgrade in the top 6 forward group and probably kicks off the domino effect as he would certainly push somebody off the roster.

More of a general question but when was the last time the Attack got a 2nd round pick that was a contributor in their 16 year old season? Ethan Burroughs? Boy would it be nice to hit on one of Munnings or Jackman(wishful thinking but would be nice to hit on both). Getting real value out of the 2nd round would be huge.
