Owen Sound Attack 2024-25 Season Thread, Part II

I didn't expect to win by any means.
We got out coached and he didn’t make any adjustments. He didn’t control his players at all.. that’s not how you’re going to best London by always taking stupid penalties. Ya I complain a lot. But he clearly had no game plan. Put the kid line back together and see what happens.
ask for your money back

I hate to break it to you, but the coach could put the best possible game plan in the world and they probably will still lose 4 in a row. You have way too high expectations if you believe the attack are beating them or going to keep it close

Well if we keep taking stupid penalties it’s gunna be ugly. Boys need to control their emotions. Ya ya I know young team. But it’s the so called vets doing this nonsense. Forwards need to help the D out better in game two.
It would help if the forwards, when they get into trouble in the offence of zone would pass back to the defenseman, to allow them time to actually cycle, which is what London does, and they do it beautifully.

Exactly. You have a complete rookie coaching staff and a group of young inexperienced players going up against a Coach with over 1000 wins and IMHO a team that is top 3 of all Knights teams in the Hunter era. It is an accomplishment we made playoffs the learning experience is invaluable.

A part of me wants the kid line out back together. If we are waving in the towel already. Zurawski Dec Mbuyi. Give us a good glimpse for next year. I’d try to get varosyn into the lineup as well. He has good speed.

For any history buffs looking for historical precedent, the last time a rebuilding Attack team fought a juggernaut Knights squad was 2015-2016. Now the Knights were a 3rd seed and we were 6th as Erie was an equal to London that year but they were still a 51 win squad that went 16-2 in the playoffs on route to a Mem Cup.

Their only two losses were to the Attack in that first round. The Attack were outmatched and outgunned, but we had a very good 18 year old goalie and a bunch of young up and comers (including a breakout 16 year-old star), and Ryan McGill coached the hell out of that team in that series.

I'd like to see, tactically, if this Attack team can make some adjustments and make life tough the way that 2016 team made life miserable for Marner and Tkachuk.

I go back to it one more time, I don’t know what some people really understand what a rebuild is

You’re not wrong, I think that’s a fair comparison, but Scott Wray isn’t Ryan McGill, not yet anyways. Part of this process is also Wray leaning and growing as well, which was why it was such a bonus to get into the playoffs in the first place

Look I want to apologize for being very critical last night, I know we are playing the best team in the CHL in my opinion. I just don’t want to see them goon it up and play stupid, imagine if it was reversed the things that would be said. The odds are extremely high to win a game or even keep it close. They just need to play smart, no bad penalties or bad turnovers. Just get it out of the d zone. Ice it if you have to. I’m glad to see that both games in OS are already sold out pretty well.

I’m sure your boys will regroup and come out stronger tomorrow! Looking forward to an exciting physical game

Like I said. I didn't expect to win. As a matter of fact I'm not surprised that it was 6-1. But this is supposed to be a teachable moment for the new kids. .

Well to be fair if it is such a teachable moment they still have time to learn from it.. Not all lessons are learnt in real time or instantly. Some times it takes a bit of time so to speak to go over what was done wrong or what could.have been done better. There for sure were mistakes in this game many were teachable. Discipline was bad and they can learn from that. There was other instances where they made plays or had d zone coverage that will surely make the video work between now and sunday but much of can be learnt from.. Do I feel like they will right the ship and win the series..Well I'd love that to happen but wont hold my breath on it. Do I feel they can find a way to win 1 or maybe 2 games? Possibly .. it would be great give London even a smidge of doubt and gain a ton of confidence.

Heres hoping we learnt some stuff before game 2 and if not I bet we give them our strongest game in game 3.

Side note Id love to see Trenten Bennett suit up for a game.. him and George honestly likely give us our best chances ... no offense to Korpro though

Id think Varosyn will be in if the injuries were anything more than minor.

I have to interject here. Yes your team played well against the 2015/16 Knights. Wear it with pride but take this into consideration...

The day before the first Attack win, Matt Tkachuk's billet mom dies of cancer. The afternoon of the second Attack win the Knights attended the funeral.

Puts a bit of a different perspective on your last sentence.

Did not know that and certainly meant it purely in an on ice context, but appreciate the info.

Have to think McDonald's injury is more than minor the way he looked going off. Not entirely sure on Waddick but he did pick up a 10 minute misconduct that once served would have left around 4 minutes of the game left to play. I think it's more likely we see Waddick in game 2.

If they can't go, I'd slot in Varosyan first and Mikus second. London is the stingiest team in the league and the Attack finished 16/20 in GF this year. Varosyan has the best chance of delivering some potential offense. Mikus has the ability to play the physical brand London loves to play and can add that element. Goal scoring to me is the biggest hurdle in this series for Owen Sound. George can't win games if the Attack don't find him any run support. Easier said than done.

Side note, Gabe Smith was assessed an "aggressor" last night for trying to fight the turtled London player which typically comes with a suspension. Nothing announced as of yet but that may factor into the lineup decisions for tomorrow. Hopefully nothing comes of it. He's eaten a lot of minutes down the stretch for the Attack.

Overall I thought the Attack showed up ready to play. London plays a physical brand of hockey and you either respond in kind or get run out of the building. I thought the Attack pushed back and handled it well all things considered. For a young team and inexperienced team there's no rolling over this year. I don't expect them to win any games but I think they've shown all year they'll leave it all out there.
