The Attack will begin the search for a new coaching staff immediately. Those intersted in either the Head Coach or Assistant Coach positions should email General Manager, Dale DeGray directly at [email protected].
Honestly, I think this is best case scenario. I think there's a better chance of getting good candidates to apply for the head coach position if they have the opportunity to be a part of the process in filling out the rest of the bench.
With so many veteran, key players having now graduated from the roster, the team is in a great spot for a new coaching staff to come in and put in place their program and build their culture. A clean slate so to speak.
Zero development of key players this year and a dismal record and sweep in playoffs. Not only a sweep, but the way they were swept. I would say Petrovsky not being signed by Minnesota and Guindon not being signed by Montreal would speak to those clubs not being impressed with their development by these coaches. I think they still have time, but not much.

Some pretty fascinating nuggets in Greg Cowan's piece this morning. The head coaching search will be an international one with one candidate already reaching out.
Probably the key piece to the article in my opinion is this quote:

DeGray said that’s slipped away, and he’s looking for a coaching staff to restore what Brian Burke famously called proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence.
“When the bus pulls in there should be some guys who don’t want to get off,” DeGray said. “To me, that should be the least we ask of the players. Everything else is a bonus. If a guy comes in and scores 40, that’s a bonus. If your power play is number one in the league, that’s a bonus. If your goaltender is the best in the league, that’s a bonus. But we need to have a starting point. That hard work. The inner drive. It’s what everybody in Owen Sound should be comfortable with because they’ve seen it year in and year out.”

The last two years where among the most frustrating from a player development standpoint, not many of any forwards progressed, and the system that they brought in this year defensively was just non existent. Its a shame that the two years where a waste, this year in particular, but it is what it is at this sage.
Itll be interesting to see the makeup of the team moving forward, i think it'll be the worst kept secret in the OHL that Barlow, Smith, Guindon will be moved at the deadline, for a nice return we hope, but how guys like Nansi, Crawford, Smith and the new guys Mboyi, Kindree, Roy and Mikus grow. No question the last 2 drafts seemingly have been about skilled compete and size, so i can see where the 'being hard to play against' thoughts are coming from.

Its's easy to say we want to be hard to play against, it is an entirely different thing to execute that. I hope these new boys can do that for you. Harder and harder finding guys to walk that walk
Not just hard to find guys who are willing, but harder and harder to find guys who can play with the skill and speed component as well. Not really a place for one dimensional players anymore.
"Excited to see things unfold over the summer" is my thoughts too. It's a breathe of fresh air and adds some much needed optimism for the future of the team. Definitely a good news day in my opinion. It will be fascinating to follow over the summer to see what candidates come forward.
Key piece here is the player development component. The roster will be young and with that comes growing pains. Hopefully the young players have the opportunities to play along with the coaching staff to work with them to grow and develop their games. It'll be fascinating to see who steps up to fill the vacancies in the line up from last season.
Once they do move on from those vet players, they almost have to play them, no choice.
This year was frustrating in many ways, but it was as if the coaching staff were terrified to put a player other then one of the established guys into a sit to play. I think early on in the season they will need those vets to show the rookies and younger players the way so to speak. The goal being to have the youth ready by the deadline to move into expanded roles and responsibilities. As they get closer to the deadline, start giving them opportunities in those positions so it's not like throwing them to the wolves once those spots are vacated. Has to be a plan and process developed on how to get there by the coaching staff.
I think the opportunity piece is two issues, one being a relatively healthy D core that didn't create opportunity in a natural manor and two being that the coaches didn't create opportunity through lineup construction to get the younger D playing time. If you look at the 06 class, Rogers played as the 7th D in most of his games as a rookie in a 11F and 7D arrangement. I'm not a fan of playing 11F and 7D but they could have sat a forward to insert Smith or Ethier on occasion as the 7th D if they didn't want to sit one of the regular 6 D-men. Sometimes opportunity has to be manufactured to keep guys involved. They can't have guys sitting 57 games in the stands this season like Gabe Smith and Sam Ethier did this season.

I expect Mbuyi and Roy get signed and likely one of Kindree or Arnett prior to camp. The past couple seasons they've signed their top guys before training camp. The fourth spot being left open for someone to win outright in camp or if they win the lottery on Jet Kwajah. I think Easton Mikus has the potential to surprise. He's listed at 6'1" and 187lbs on elite prospects. SIJHL isn't a great league but he's played against older players and was amongst the best in the league, seemingly in a good spot to enter the OHL at 17. Trent Gates is probably a likely player to sign as well I think, big counting stats and led the league by a wide margin over 2nd place in scoring. Clearly a skilled player and with our projected forward group going into next year, adds an element they might be light on.
I think Brennan is a likely cut in my opinion. He won't be a major factor on the team and probably better to have the ice time opportunity for someone like Mikus or Gates who could be part of the team the next time they are ready to contend. I think they also make a move on one of Smith or Jordan to make room for a younger player. Next year's focus needs to be on growing and developing the youth. Tying up two D roster spots on OAs seems unwise in my opinion during a rebuild. The point might be moot if Smith ends up in the AHL anyways.
Still need to see what happens with the import draft. The Attack intend on taking two picks and how they use them is TBD. I'm assuming it ends up being 1F and 1D but who knows?

Don't be surprised to see Hookey in Sarnia and Smith in San Diego
If Smith was signing a pro deal, he would have done it with everyone else when they signed in Anahiem.
Hookey is too important to the team to get the 5th round pick or whatever he would get back in a trade. Plus, Sarnia has plenty of 04s right now at forward with Filak and Doucette.
To be honest, I think they move both Jordan and Smith at some point, but just one to start, the other at the deadline. I think Smith would be worth a lot at the deadline to be honest
I wouldn't be so sure on Smith being back. They still have the prospects camp post draft and the NHL preseason where he could earn a contract. Anaheim can wait another year to sign him and he would need to force his way into the picture but I'm not 100% on him returning. Anaheim does have a good prospect pool on D though so it's more than likely he comes back to Owen Sound. I would expect the trade return would be better on Smith than Jordan. Jordan likely starts in Owen Sound and likely sticks through the year unless he builds trade value on the market by the deadline.
I would think Guindon and Hookey end up as the other two OAs with Jordan. Guindon would be moved at the deadline, maybe Hookey as well if he can garner some interest with a good first half.
Who knows what kind of roster movement might take place over the summer. It was a disappointing season and sometimes guys want a fresh start or a new opportunity. The new coaching staff could potentially fix any lingering issues that could potentially carry over from last season as they won't, at least in theory, have any connection to the roster. We know the glut of 04s will get trimmed down over the summer but I wouldn't be shocked if there were other players shuffled out as well.
Ya, could he make San Diego, sure, but I think its very hard for him. If Anaheim wanted him there, I think they would have acted on it already. I think they keep Jordan until they know for sure that Smith is back.
It's an uphill climb for sure but he's pro size at 6'6" and 209lbs. He moves well for his size. I think he's a bit of a project and underwhelmed this past season in my opinion in the OHL but if he finds a way to deliver consistently the way he played in the playoffs for the Attack he'll have a shot.
The OA front runners for me are Guindon, Hookey, Smith and Jordan. Smith and Guindon would have the most value. I think Hookey and Jordan would end up similar to Lawrence last season and get a late pick. Being that our forward group is on the weaker end, I would keep Guindon and move Smith early to roll with Guindon, Hookey and Jordan as the OAs if you're trying to maximize trade value. The extra time on Jordan and Hookey would allow them to play and potentially build some trade value over the first half that they won't have entering the year. I think with the amount of rookie and younger players expected to be on the roster in the forward mix having an element of toughness that Hookey can bring has value. With that said, I think Jackson Stewart might have a better shot at being the third OA than we maybe think. I don't see it personally but DeGray might value him and his role a little higher with the expected make up of the roster.
In saying all that, they could elect to grab two forwards in the import draft and change the direction of the roster. We'll have to wait for July to see how the import draft plays out and then see if Owen Sound gets commitments to report. Long ways to go before we get any real answers. Priority right now I think is getting a head coach nailed down. DeGray mentioned he doesn't like doing deals over the summer because the value is generally low on returns so I don't imagine we will see anything until close to camp in August for whatever moves may be made.
