Half way through first scrimmage. Connor Thacker is in camp after not being listed on the camp roster previously. Team Red's D looks strong. Liked Thacker, Major, Smith and Ethier. Smith showed off his wheels with a nice rush up ice, protected the puck and went hard to the net. Ethier was active in the offensive end, moves well. Addy looked pretty good, though I thought he rushed/forced things a bit at times.

Surprised to see Matejicek out there as I wasn't expecting him until main camp but he looks really good so far. Moves well, pretty aggressive on the puck. Didn't really notice Crawford or Nansi much so far. Saw a bit of Nansi's speed and skating skill but seemed a bit tentative.

Really liked the look of Sam Ethier in the first scrimmage. Very good skater and looked confident with the puck. He was the top unsigned player in my opinion.

I thought Connor Thacker looked much better than last year. Didn't seem to wander out of position and did a better job covering the front of the net. Would be a long shot at best but another large, physical Dman in the mix.

Drastically different pace to scrimmage #2. Lots of speed and puck skill on display. of the 07s, Meli and DiCarlo look pretty good so far.

The Addy kid looks good, surprised to see Crawford pushed off puck so easily, early though

Interesting Day 1. The D battle in camp is pretty solid. Ethier, Major and Thacker looked pretty good. Didn't see much from Luddington and when he did try to make plays he got knocked around a bit. DiCarlo looked solid as well. In the forward group I thought Addy looked good, played in the areas of the ice you want to see him in and brought some physical play, picked up a couple of goals. Meli showed well, played with quite a bit of pace. I thought Nansi looked much better in scrimmage 2 and was able to show off his skating and puck skills. Didn't really notice Crawford a whole lot.

Of the other signed players, Smith looks really solid. He moves really well and makes it look easy getting around the ice. Matejicek looked good. Strong on the boards and in front of the net. Played pretty aggressively and moved the puck well.

Nico Addy is as advertised.
Big, strong, skates well, strong passer, plays with an edge .
He will learn to play without the puck at this level.

Crawford had some good looks, big , skates very well.

Smith has a good stick big and strong .
Things got chippier as the day wore on..
FA Guevremont impressed me.

It will be interesting to see how Addy looks at main camp when he mixes in with the older, more physically mature players. He moves pretty well for his size which I think will be his biggest challenge adjusting to the league. If he handles the pace of play I think he's a pretty good player, even at 16. He's going to give opposing Dmen fits.

I thought Crawford looked a lot more comfortable in this morning's scrimmage. Both he and Nansi had some moments where they got to showcase their skillset. Looked like Major had some jump in his game as he was quite active carrying the puck and being more involved offensively.

Addy went up against Matejicek in the corner and got worked over a bit. Matejicek looks really strong along the wall, I don't think you'll see him lose too many battles for pucks in the hard areas of the ice.

I think Martin and Koprowski are the two top goalies so far. Both are bigger bodies and move well. Martin looks like a pretty good puck handler.

Of the unsigned players, I'd like to see Ethier, Major, Thacker and DiCarlo move on to main camp amongst the D. Meli, Rai, Cerqua and Nansi were the forwards for me. I'd take Martin and Koprowski for goalies.

Ethier and Major were the two best D. Really like Ethier's skating and offensive potential. Major moves well and has some decent puck skills to go along with his bigger frame. Thacker doesn't look like he has the puck skills but he's big, moves reasonably well and was physical. DiCarlo is an 07 but I think he'll be someone to keep an eye on for next year. He's small but I was impressed with his skating and the puck skills.

Nansi has quite the set of hands. He was able to make some pretty good plays in tight spaces using his hands and quick feet. I wouldn't be shocked if Meli and Rai are players at some point down the road.

Pretty good looking 07 group and that's without Prud'homme and Wiles showing up.

Main Camp Roster:
Team Red:

Goalies:
Trenten Bennett & Carter George
Defensemen: Sam Ethier, Taos Jordan, Izayah Luddington, Zach Major, Martin Matejicek & Sam Sedley
Forwards: Colby Barlow, Tomislav Brennan, Ethan Burroughs, Thomas Chafe, Jake Crawford, Evan Elliott, Cedrick Guindon, Landen Hookey, Harry Nansi & Jake Skuta.

Team White:

Goalies:
Matthew Koprowski & Corbin Votary
Defensemen: Anthony Di Carlo, James Petrovksi, Braedyn Rogers, Gabriel Smith, Madden Steen & Connor Thacker.
Forwards: Nico Addy, Damen Boose, Antonio Cerqua, Ben Cormier, Michael Dec, Deni Goure, Kaleb Lawrence, Jackson Stewart, Antonio Tersigni & Declan Waddick

Italicized names are returning players. I'm assuming it's a typo on Connor Thacker as I copied and pasted from the team website. I'm a little surprised they brought Bennett to main camp as I thought he was the weakest of the four goalies. No other surprises off the top of my head.

Appreciate the camp updates and thoughts everyone. Interesting group of players moving on to main camp, especially the number of later round picks. Looks like there are a few jobs up for grabs, and maybe stiff competition on the back end.

Just fitness testing and practice's today. It will be interesting tomorrow to see how some of the rookies handle going against the vets. To me it was pretty easy to see why the 4 signed rookies where signed they are the cream. I'm not sure if I agree that there are spots open without some movement by my count returning and signed fwds # 14 and signed and returning d # 7 so 1 fwd maybe when we move an O/A and maybe 1 d if they go with 8 and that is only if a move isn't made to add some experience. I personally would like to see a Matt Stanisz type d man to play alongside Sedley much like Matt did with Blacker. Of course if 1 of our returnees shows they can fill that role even better.

I'm expecting them to add a D. If it's not one of the guys in camp then I would expect a trade. The forward group seems to be what it is unless somebody gets shipped out. 14 forwards is likely the ideal number.

My personal favorites are Ethier and Major if it's an internal add. I really liked both in rookie scrimmages. Thacker would be a distant third place as I don't think the puck skills are there but certainly has the physical presence.

It will be interesting to see if Addy tones it down a little bit with the main camp rosters. He was a royal pain in the ass in rookie camp with all the chippy play off the puck, getting under the skin of the opposition. Not sure that will fly with the regulars.

Some interesting tidbits in Greg Cowan's latest. New AC Rumble plans to implement a new defensive system, the same system used previously with Gatineau. I'm not familiar with his system but I look forward to seeing changes. I thought they played way too passively as a D core last year and hopefully they have a little more aggression, especially at defending the blueline. It just felt too easy for the opposition to get to the prime shooting positions at times last season.

Edit: Found a bit of info on Rumble's style in a previous Greg Cowan piece from when he was hired:

Rumble will take over responsibility for the team’s defence and penalty kill, and he said he likes his players to limit their mistakes and play aggressively.

“I can’t stand doing anything passively,” he said. “That’s something I love to do, look at ways to shut down the opponent’s attack.”

I like that him and Crawford have that competitive fire .
This is gonna be a real fun season .

It’s really interesting to see how rookies handled rookie camp versus main camp. Some that I thought did well in rookie camp I felt struggled in todays scrimmage with the faster pace. Others I thought played a simpler game due to the faster pace. It will be fun to see how they further adjust as they get more comfortable.

I noticed the same thing. The pace and physicality in main camp was a big step up. I thought Ethier and Major struggled early on but seemed to adjust as the day went on. In time and space with good players you can really get a good look at Ethier's offensive abilities. Thacker I noticed played a super simple yet fairly effective game today and did a pretty good job handling the physical play. The D battle has been really interesting to watch.

Nansi alternatively seemed to really thrive with the pace and skill today. He didn't seem phased at all by the physical play and made some really good plays. He was fun to watch.

I know the Attack have typically eased their rookies into the lineup but I don't think that will be the case with Addy. He looks ready to hit the ground running and I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing up in the lineup rather than on the fourth line.

Still one scrimmage to go but I think I like the forward mix to be:

Waddick - Guindon - Barlow
Hookey - Petrovsky - Burroughs
Brennan - Lawrence - Addy
Stewart - Cormier - Tersigni
Chafe - Crawford

Guindon with two trigger men on his flanks is awfully appealing. Hookey and Brennan could be interchangeable but I like Hookey's size on line two. Lawrence and Addy have looked good together in scrimmages and I think that would be a nice combo on the third line. Some nights line 2 and 3 could swap depending on which line is going on a particular evening. Stewart with Cormier and Tersigni can take a regular turn and provide energy and chip in a bit on the score sheet.

If Lawrence gets moved out in favour of Goure I think I'd make a couple tweaks:
Waddick - Guindon - Barlow
Petrovsky - Goure - Burroughs
Hookey - Brennan - Addy
Stewart - Cormier - Tersigni
Chafe - Crawford

Still TBD on the defense for me. I like the idea of Sedley playing with Matejicek but other than that I think the other pairs could look any number of ways.

I would be surprised if they started Sedley with Matejicek at the beginning of the season. Sedley will get #1 minutes and not sure M will. I see Jordan with Sedley to start. I am starting to think they go 9 D as I think there are issues back there.

Jordan - Sedley
Petrovski - Rodgers
Matejicek - Steen
Smith and two unsigned rookies to provide competition/develop.

I do see a trade to improve coming as many of the white D have struggled and the red D have not been challenged in these scrimmages.
