IQ can be taught? IMO that’s incorrect. Can’t teach compete either. Power, imo, has no problems with IQ and compete. He’s a good young D man who needs more experience. Is his ceiling a #1 or a #3? The market will establish his value.

Based on some criticisms I’ve seen:

Expectations are —way— too high for a 21 year old.

I don’t watch his game or know his strengths or weaknesses at all, but I know beyond any doubt that in 5 years he will be a much different contributor because every single skater is like this. Physiology and such. Boys vs men.

I’d guess if he moved it would be one of the bigger deals of the cap era. There have been big ones that Power wouldn’t approach, but moving a young healthy high pedigree defenseman would get you a monster return. If hockey trade you should expect a highly impactful and controlled player in return.

I wouldn’t blame Buffalo for moving him if the return was hefty. You can’t have tons of young defensemen and expect consistency. You can’t have tons of young centers and expect consistency. Is what it is.

He absolutely has #1D talent. I don’t think he’ll ever be physically imposing, despite his size, but he unquestionably has the offensive/transition chops, and we’ve seen flashes of defensive brilliance from him, too (apart from, again, the utter lack of physicality). I have no doubt that he could be developed into 25-minute per game D. I only question if Buffalo is capable of doing it.

He is a d man. If he can’t play d he is not a #1 option. He will never contribute enough offensively to counter the hole he creates in his own end. If he doesn’t use his size, he is not a 25 minute guy which alot of will be spent in his own zone. With Dahlin or a similar player ahead of him he needs more grit to challenge for a more significant role. He is the same meek player he was in the USHL and U of M.

Hockey IQ can be taught

He can be taught where to be on the ice and how to stick check effectively and win puck battles

Now I haven't seen a whole lot of sabres hockey, but if the problem with him is his IQ/Defensive play, those are 2 things that can be fixed with good coaching.

If you can get a player that addresses a need at forward sure go for it, I just wouldn't sell low on him is all. I don't think the Sabres window is closing in the next 5-6 years, Dahlin has like a decade maybe more ahead of him.

my view is that sabres are embarrassingly overloaded on the left side d position and are damaging both power and byram's development for that reason and overall a shitty team with a poisonous atmosphere that impedes development. they have the assets to make moves in the left d position alone to be a good team but their management and owner are too toxic to make such moves.

personally, i see the situation as a huge opportunity to leverage value. if i were them i would trade dahlin, counting on at least one of byram and power to rise to the situation and become a top pair and hence get more than just a trade return for dahlin. that would be the highest upside move. if you keep dahlin, you trade both the other two now for packages that include solid prime or near prime age players who will fill roles that compliment the rest of the witches' brew of a sabres team and hopefully spark a culture change. that's riskier move because you are not getting the pure quality of player for either that dahlin would fetch and because dahlin is the status quo and that is not what you want.

OMG, another one... we don't trade Dahlin, stop this nonsense please. You have absolutely no idea what the problem is with this team, we already traded our best player and captain and where are we now? Doing it again because of the potential of Power or Byram, who doesn't even seem like he's going to stay in Buffalo next season. Go trade Quinn Hughes then if you're asking us to trade Dahlin.

If Power was traded to a real franchise that would develop him properly, give him the support defensively he needs, he could absolutely be a #1 defenseman in a few years.

The Sabres should be trying to trade Power for a top 6 center who is fully developed. He has the most trade value and they have too many pmd.

The Dahlin talk in this thread is an absolute joke. Dahlin is the one player the Sabres should absolutely never trade. He is their best player by far and a top defenseman in the league. If he played for a real organization he would be a top 5 player in the league.

- I can't hire new assistant coaches for a new coach,

- I can't add vets to the roster so I don't rush the young players and develop them properly.

- I can't add good defensders and mentors for young Dahlin and Power.

- I can't add a legit top 6 forward in five years as a GM.

- I can't add a top 4 RD in five years... and so on.

- Trade our young center who had a great year for Byram, who we didn't need.

- I can't build the roster properly so it can succeed. I'm tired of listing them.

Of course. However this thread is about the value of Power. Clearly the Sabres have a 1D in Dahlin. If they value Power as also a 1D and can get a value in return that reflects that, then it’s a wise trade. However if the market sees Power as a 3 and the value of the return reflects that, then the Sabres have a big decision. Do they keep Power, who they believe is a #1? If they do then they have, in their view of value, two #1 D.
The Sabres, imo, are in no position to have the luxury of two #1 D, when clearly they are in need of better players in other roles.
if Power is valued by the Sabres as a #3, then they wouldn’t trade him because, as you point out, it’s good to have more than two top four D.

If Power is also a #1, then why not keep him and move Dahlin to get the best return? The club still has Power to play Dahlin’s role.
IMO when a team has two players they consider #1 D or #1 goalie, and the club is clearly needing to fill holes in several other positions, they should trade the guy who’s return fills those holes and turns the club into a winner.
If Power has that king of value, then he’s the guy. If he doesn’t, but the Sabres believe he’s a #1 D, then move Dahlin.

Power isn't there yet. Hes still learning. What buffalo wants is s defrnse first RD to pair with him

Dahlin is not getting traded

Sounds like the Noah Dobson situation. Dobson is 3 years older and a RHD coming off a 70 point season. He’s a RFA and will likely get a deal similar to Power. He’s also soft as butter on the defensive side despite being 6’ 4”.

Both teams need a shake up. Power has the aura of a #1OA pick but otherwise this seems like a fairly even swap if you factor in Dobson’s right handedness and better scoring stats.

I suppose it’s not realistic because it opens up a big hole on the right side of the Isles defense and I’m gonna guess this has a similar effect on the left side for the Sabres.

I misunderstanding something? If he’s not a 1d currently, then he’s not considered a 1d. Potential doesn’t matter to what he is currently, as he may never reach that potential. Just trying to understand how you’re equating it to that.

I said his potential is a #1 do trade value reflects that given he is just 21.

People thought Dahlin was also clueless defensively a couple of years ago. He's improved dramatically.
