they could have just drafted beniers and avoided this problem altogether. anyway, that ship sailed and power will probably be okay, but it just wouldn't be a Buffalo Sabres Hockey Season without a big defenseman playing 1/3 of the game rocking a 35% corsi and xgf%

Wow, this is certainly a take...

I actually wanted Beniers over Power as well, but watching Power and seeing anything other than a kid with elite tools, high IQ, and a high likelihood of developing into an elite defenseman is probably a take you're going to regret.

Also, Beniers rocked a 28.6% CF% last night so it's not like he's dominating every shift for the Kraken.

You don’t seem to realize what he posted is a preemptive mocking of what you’re suggesting.

Last season Power’s CF% was 58% and his xGF% was 56%. He has one tough game and you come with this weak garbage suggesting he is like Risto

He looked a little out of sorts last night. It was like he's never played a full season of NHL hockey before.

LMFAO. Literally. It's, like, detached and I'm on my hands and knees looking for the screw before it barricades itself in the basement like last time.

I’ve been watching quite a bit too. Seems like his post-Olympics game hasn’t been great at all. Not sure if it’s fatigue, injury or what.

One of my first thoughts watching him post-Olympics is that he’s almost too calm with the puck. He goes in for a defensive zone retrieval nonchalant and takes his time passing it out. The first time I saw it I thought “wow - look at the composure of this kid” which quickly transformed into “okay now move the puck!!”.

When I watched earlier in the year + WJC I was always blown away by how good he was, so I’m certain this is just some sort of slump. Doesn’t make me want to rush to get him on the Sabres after his season though. Maybe let the kid rest after a crazy year.
I'm bumping my previous comment because it seemed like this issue has creeped into his game again - at least last night. This was a bit of an issue at Michigan last year and it seemed like he needs to decide what he's doing with the puck a little bit quicker. I think he just has a very calm demeanor - which is normally a very good thing - but in certain instances he needs to have a little more urgency when retrieving pucks/has a chance to clear the zone. Just something I'm keeping my eye on with his game going forward.

He could use some Ray Bourque advice - if doing something out there, do it hard. He wasn't crisp with how he moved the puck a couple of times last night, almost dainty with the puck, and it cost them a bit.

I agree with your note. Victor Hedman was always a too calm guy as well, until he started developing a little more crisp with his d-zone exits.

Power is YOUNG. His tools and composure are sky high. Just needs to learn how to make firm decisions and be crisp on passes.

I dont think Granato will have any issues pushing Power to play confidently

I said Power will probably be okay. I mean, you might consider that "damning with faint praise," but it's a far cry from just trashing a guy.
You're acting like Beniers would of been the better pick and their careers are way too young to make that assessment. At least OP isnt a Career Minus player like Matt :p

I saw this as well. I think part of it was Ottawa was coming up and getting on exiting defenseman about as fast as anyone in the league. They were intentionally taking away his time and passing lanes. A good vet dman probably makes them pay for it, but Power definitely looked like the passing lanes he was expecting were not there and he didn't have time come up with an alternate plan. A few of his passes were telegraphed and not crisp enough, so they got intercepted.

I think he just needs some time to get up to the speed of the NHL game and then he will be fine.

Shoulda got one game in
I was one of (maybe the only) guy on here who was pushing hard for Beniers over Power, so this is just my thing. But Beniers is crushing it in Seattle, he absolutely looks like the real deal, while we are back to talking about our lovable big defenseman who just needs to right partner to unlock his potential.

I had Beniers and McTavish over Power, but there was very little separating them. Power was just 3rd because of being a dman, but I was fine no matter who the team picked.

It's time to start holding Hamilton accountable for outlandish crap like this. I have never heard of anyone saying this? Good on Chad for standing up and calling him out.

I know it's urban dictionary, but that description made me lose some brain cells. A sissy is just a coward, not whatever that is.

So someone mentioned in a podcast the other night that Power was last in shots against at 5-on-5 among defensemen. And a couple games later, he's now 2nd last at 113 to Winnipeg's Neal Pionk's 119. But he's also 18th in the league in shots for (99). That's more than Dahlin (95) or guys like Brent Burns or Roman Josi thus far. NTS has him at 15th in the league for HDCF at 43 and while not great, only 11th worst at HDCA at 41 behind guys like Cam Fowler, Josh Morrisey, Pionk and Ghost.

So with him struggling a bit with puck luck and still looking like a rookie at times, he's out there when they are getting a metric shit ton of shots, they are getting a lot of quality chances for, and it's a bit of a saw-off going the opposite way. I was expecting to see him getting stove-in but that's a guy looking to figure it out and it's still damn near even. He's going to be a beast.
