It might not be 100% accurate at the moment, but I think by the end of next season it might be. Name a team with a better 1/2 in the defensive depth chart when Power starts to come into his own.
Toews had a lackluster year but the Colorado Avalanche

Right now yes, but do you think Makar/Toews now will be better than Dahlin/Power in a year or two? And honestly that's the only team I could come up with. So the original comment was not as outlandish as Hog made it sound.

Chabot - Sanderson is pretty damn good
Hamilton - Nemec is enviable with both being RHD
From what I've seen Sens fans are pretty over Chabot at this point

There's really no way to know but Toews is definitely a top 15 D in the league and has an argument for top 10. Don't think it's a guarantee that Power hits that level.

Makar/Toews is one of the, if not the best combo in the league this season. That doesn't mean it will be in 2 years. Also, they're a pairing whereas Dahlin/Power are on separate pairs.

Of course there's no guarantees but he's certainly ahead of the curve and with a higher ceiling than just about anyone in the league right now.

They have both been dynamite for 3 seasons now, I don't see why they wouldn't stay that way for a couple more. Both of them rely on their dynamic skating a lot so at some point that will go for Toews but he's still only 29.

And fwiw in the regular season Toews has played about as many 5on5 minutes away from Makar as with him, with notably more defensively skewed deployment away from Makar and pretty much identical on-ice results as Makar away from Toews.

They are both great skaters and why they're one of the best pairs in the league. Iirc Toews started the year with Girard mostly but moved into that power couple with Makar. Buffalo doesn't have the depth to pull that off now. Maybe in a couple years 🤞

They're definitely better than our big two but I got the feeling we were talking about potential where both of the Sabres should seemingly get better whereas Toews probably doesn't have the same ceiling.

I think Power, like Dahlin before him, gets punished in these debates for starting in the league so young.

Toews was an overage draft pick whose first full season in the NHL happened in his D+6 year as a 25yr old. The equivalent season for Power is his D+7 season. I bring this up to point out Power has 5 years to go to reach that.

It’s very premature to declare what Power can or can’t become.

I have said nothing about what Power can or can't become, it's just about the likeliness of what he *will* become. Power doesn't need to hit the 99th percentile of outcomes like Toews to match him but it's simply not a guarantee that he will be a fringe top 10 guy in the league or better. I think he has a very good shot at doing it but that's not a guarantee, he's still got lots to work on.

That‘s semantics. I’d also say the whole top 10/15 thing is a pointless distraction. Any list like that is going to be extremely subjective to the point of being meaningless.

If you want to compare Power to Toews. Then just do it straight up. How do they match up defensively, offensively and overall? There is some level of subjectivity to this, especially defensive play. But we know Toews is a fantastic defensive player and we see what he’s done offensively.

Can Power match or exceed those things? The point I’m making is we can’t know yet or compare Power to him because he’s not physically mature or as strong as he’s going to be. Toews came in the league is a 25yr old late bloomer already physically mature. He didn’t have those physical limitations impacting his game.

We also need to know what level offensive player Toews is to compare to. Is he the guy who was on a 16g 70pt pace the Cup year? Or is he the guy this season with 7g 50pts? Because those are two very different benchmarks.

Toews seemed to take a hit due to the offensive depth losses of Kadri/Landeskog. Whereas Makar was still the 90pt offensive animal this season like he was the Cup year.

That is exactly my point. We can't assume what exact level Power will reach in 3 years.

And fwiw, Toews' primary point rates at 5on5 have been very consistent season to season (the only outlier being his second year on the Islanders)
