Now that it sounds like Dahlin is done at 10x8, what do we think Power's contract looks like? 7x8? 8x8? 6x3?

Well damn, he'll be a UFA at 24, 25?
Burning that first year made it the same as Dahlin playing at 18. Dahlin could be a UFA in two seasons at 25 if he wanted to be too.

It’s why pinning down term on Power is so tricky. With Dahlin he’s one year from UFA so you want to go as long as you can. With Power…there is benefit to 3 year bridge deals (and danger as we saw with Tkachuk and Reinhart and DuBois/DeBriknkcat now). But the player can look at a 7 or 8 year deal and get to UFA again at 28/29…which means…giant payday #2. I would want the latter option if it were me. Hand me that 56-64 million guaranteed and I will become a UFA at 28 And cash in even more? All day long on that one. But players want different things.

From KA's perspective, I would rather go the latter route also. He could probably get Power at around 6-7 mil at 6-8 years now. After a 3 year bridge...more like 10 mil per.

In three years, this team might be a SC contender, but in the next 6-7 years with Power, that his the entire SC window for this team, and they can afford the cap hit during that time frame.

More than anything I think Adams wants the long term cap certainty. If you have the exact # that your top 2 C and top 3 D all make for the next 7 seasons…you don’t have to make choices around one of the premium positions on the team needing a big increase in a couple years.

And…if you’re already paying Power a nice big number for 7 years or so…his next contract on your books is only the difference between his new number and his current one. Other teams have to make room for the whole new big number.

I don't see why Power should want to do an extension this year. Feels like he could get a better deal if he plays out next year and develops the way we hope he will. He bets on himself, then signs the deal when he actually hits RFA...it's just hard to see what he gains by doing it this year.

He is a 10.2c next year which means RFA means even less - he is not eligible for an offer sheet. Only Sabres can negotiate with him

What is a 10.2(c) player?

A player becomes a free agent when their contract expires on July 1 after the last League Year of their contract. A player who does not meet the UFA requirements or the Group 2 RFA requirements displayed in the table above, and has been issued a qualifying offer, is designated a 10.2(c) player. The player is only eligible to negotiate and sign a contract with the club that holds their signing rights. They are ineligible to negotiate a contract (offer sheet) with any other club. They are also ineligible for arbitration. If the player does not receive a qualifying offer by June 25th at 5:00pm ET, they immediately become a UFA.

Right, but he still has no extra incentive to get the deal done this offseason when his ELC still has a year left on it, unless the Sabres overpay. He can play out the ELC, and if he has a good year, conceivably put himself in position to ask for more money from the Sabres. The only reasons to sign a long-term deal this offseason would be if he's afraid of injury, or doesn't think he'll reach his potential (because the Sabres have no reason to give him a high AAV right now).

Also, with the cap probably going up next year, there may be more dollars available anyways.

The security of being offered $60M+ at age 20 in a sport where your career can end at any moment is a tough thing to walk away from.

The only reason to sign him this off season to a bridge would be if he gets some signing bonus money this summer.

he should get a 2-3 yr bridge then a long contract.
