Prospect Info: Owen Pickering, 21st Overall, 2022 NHL Draft

Love the pick, just would of preferred a high skilled forward, window is 2-3 years and forwards get into the NHL a lot faster than defenseman.

He oozes potential, wasnt playing on a high offensive team, so those stats will be lower, but he grew like a bean stalk this year. He will fill out and can already skate. Only thing is hes probably another year in the WHL, 2 years in the AHL and a rough transition year in the NHL to develop. Thats 4 years before we will really see something.

Sanheim was drafted in 2014 and played half the 2017-18 season. Different situations/circumstances/teams etc

Not sure why people are calling attention to prospects media skills. The draft was very white, and very wealthy. All these kids looked to have had PR training.

Anyways, hard to judge how an 18 year old will look four years from now. As such I will root for him and reserve judgement until his career progresses a little.

Ngl, I have not seen this whatsoever.

Pickering himself talked about not having really developed a physical edge yet and how he's more focused on box outs and pinning guys on the wall in that regard at the moment, and more will come as he matures.
He said himself - he likes to throw open ice hits and kill plays and pin along the boards etc.

Some scouting profiles

Scouting Report: Owen Pickering - Smaht Scouting - "one of the biggest “what if” players in this draft class... defining trait in Pickering’s game is his skating... can be great one moment and not as great the next: puck skills/passing and defensive awareness... knows what he needs to do in each situation... defensemen I’ve watched this season, Pickering’s shot stands out as the best"

2022 NHL Draft #20: Owen Pickering Scouting Report - "very good skate... very thin right now... outstanding shot... signs of being an effective playmaker but needs to work on his consistency... defensive game could use a little refinement"

Owen Pickering — 2022 NHL Draft Prospect Profile - "acting as a one-man breakout at times... one shift, he’ll throw a saucer pass across two zones tape-to-tape before messing up a 10-foot breakout pass on the next shift... possesses a big shot from the point... lot to like in Pickering’s defensive game, and some things to dislike"

Analysis: Owen Pickering is a unicorn among draft-eligible defensemen - good one for highlights

That's another oddity for the Pens. We drafted someone who actually has a hard shot from the point. He's going to look out of place on our muffin shooting defense.

Owen Pickering with Steve Dangle & Colby Armstrong

Dangle is an annoying little shit.

The oddity is never that we have hard point shots. It's that this team doesn't like to use the point shot. Schultz didn't shoot anymore at the point, Matheson didn't as much either, etc.

The Pens point has been nothing since Sarge left.

He'd fit right in around here.
I always mix him and Lt. Dangle up in my mind.

What in the hell are you trying say here?

I'm cool with the pick. Just from watching a few videos, he looks to have good offensive instincts, or at least the confidence to jump into the play. How would we feel if this guy turns into a bigger, higher pedigree John Marino?

Jumped on here to see the experts (who learned Owen Pickering’s name 5 minutes before the draft) bash the pick…I was not disappointed.

I agree though, I definitely wanted that Russian winger who certainly could be a real person.
