He gives me serious Ryan O'Reilly vibes... that kid forced his way onto the avs because of his dominant defensive play in his first pre-season.

If it weren't for the habs being completely stacked with NHL forwards, I wouldn't be surprised if he forced his way onto the roster.

Ideally, he gets sent back down even if he looks like one of the more dependable centers in our system already... let him dominate the OHL, WJC, and then make the squad out the gate next season. He won't need the AHL.

To me, Beck has everything to be a very good 2C. Yesterday, we could see he had to adjust to the speed of the game but he still managed to have a very good game.

Defensive side, we already know what he can offer.

Offensively, he's already got NHL speed and acceleration, he's a very smart player who cares about doing the right play and has a good shot (will probably need to work on the release). Add to that the commitment he has to improve (seems to be a major character trait). I think we have a good one. Offensively, Danault is his floor IMO and could pretty well become a Prime Plekanec new version.

Your argument was that it's easier to score goals in the 'Q. Which is false given how many goals are scored in the OHL vs. the Q. The OHL is a more offensive league the past decade or so. It doesn't mean it has less talent, just that the style of play is more towards the attack.

It's okay to admit you were wrong instead of grasping at straws and looking at defensemen to try to justify your point.
My point was that it was easier to score in the Q vs OHL and I think I made my point.

I'm a big believer in letting prospects dominate and get creative in their league before bringing them up, so I'd rather him play at least another year in the O
Has that worked for these guys earlier in their careers?

Are the best 16 year olds held back in Midget AAA?

Do all first year Bantams stay in AA rather than AAA?

Do all non-elite prospects do one year in the ECHL before graduating to the AHL?

Beck stood out the most amongst young players last night according to MSL.

Jonathan Drouin stayed back in AAA to be with his friends and when he finally joined the Mooseheads, he was immediately one of the best players in the Q.

FWIW, just heard TVA’s Mapper on JiC’s show say that he had an interesting conversation with a scout in attendance at the rookie tournament, about Owen Beck.

The scout told him that Beck reminded him of Patrice Bergeron when Bergeron was in juniors. Not that Beck will become Bergeron but that there are notable similarities between the two in juniors.
Don't show Wright that quote. :sarcasm:

OK, one case out of how many thousands? In general, do top 16 year olds play in the CHL even if they are on the third line to start? Or is it thought they will develop their offence more by skating around pylons in a lower league?

I think you see it happen.. Cam Hillis stayed back a year and was a really strong OHLer when he finally played. I can't speak to every case, but I can say in Halifax, more players would be served doing what Drouin did.

We've been hyped many years with good prospects but Whynot, for example, has never come close to his billing and probably would have been better served not playing bottom pair.

Cam Hillis did not get drafted NHL in the first round. I'm talking about the best prospects at 18 - what was their history in terms of playing up to a challenge versus dominating weaker players when they were 13-16?

It's hard to make the same comparison though because generally the top prospects coming into the CHL have already supremely dominated their peer groups. There's a bigger gulf of talent at those ages vs. the NHL where everyone is at a minimum talent threshold in systems.

A top prospect in the CHL is going to get opportunities and have the puck on their stick a lot of the time. That doesn't happen with top prospects in the NHL who may be playing a 3rd/4th line role with no PP time.

I understand what you're saying but I don't think the situations are the same even if it's the same sport and concept overall.

There is a difference between the NHL and the minor/junior league

And I have many exemple of players that should't have played in the Q at 16. WTK have name Whynot who is a good exemple

What a draft 2022 will be for this organization.
We got the best player in the draft AND Slafkovsky 🙃

Beck reminds me of Robert Thomas.

Let him dominate in the O this year and gain tons of confidence.
Or O'Reilly. Let him play in the NHL and develop his game against top competitors.

I would keep him for 9 games trial and put Juraj in the AHL.

If they can't produce much in AA or Midget, it may very well be better for them to stay an extra year. If they are the best in their age group, then your point doesn't make sense since the idea is to make sure they do well enough before moving up.

I love that a guy like MSL is there to help him along during this camp. Not some Therrien type that's going to try to turn him into a defensive grinder.

Hopefully it translates into his season this year.

Looks like he’ll be able to replace Dvo in a couple of seasons.
That will net them a nice return from a trade and a few million in cap space at a time when they’ll start competing.

Now they just have to figure out if Dach is the answer for the top 6. I suppose there’s a different thread for that.
Sounds very similar to what we were saying about Poehling replacing Danault. Except I think Beck has already shown more promise than Poehling ever did.

Think we should pump the brakes a bit even though most of us like what we’ve seen.

My point is that all along up to now, these guys played up to challenges. The best 13 year olds play Bantam, the best 14 year olds play Bantam AAA, the best 16 year olds play in the CHL, even though most start on the third line.
