Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894

Again, if it was Gretzky, you could say that and get away with it. But the reality is it’s very close, and I personally have to go with the absolute one man wrecking machine that was 2008 OV. I also prefer OV’s entire career over Mario by a landslide. Nobody is winning 7 rockets in 8 years again in our lifetime.

I think in 10 years, when we look back on OV’s career with the same nostalgia that Mario constantly gets afforded, we will say OV > Mario, because Mario is a ‘what if’ and OV is the greatest goal scorer that ever lived.

I'm a huge Ovi fan, but completely disagree with you on this. Ovechkin is the better goal scorer in my opinion, but overall, it's Lemieux >> Ovechkin.

Peak: Lemieux >>> Ovechkin and anyone not in the big-4

Prime: Lemieux > Ovechkin. Obviously injuries hurt Lemieux, but he still crushed point races while being a dominant goal scorer.

Career/longetivity: This is the only area where you can make an argument that they're about even. Ovechkin will finish with way more goals, significantly more adjusted goals, close points, a fair bit ahead in adjusted points. But when considering the large gap in the above, Ovechkin having a longer elite career without injuries won't make up for this.

Combine the 3 above, and there's no chance for Ovi>Lemieux to be a thing.

We can agree to disagree. I think as time goes by, people will appreciate OV more. Lemieux put up his massive point totals with numerous hall of famers on his team, during an era with no parity and record high scoring.

He never won anything without multiple hall of famers in a lopsided NHL. Can you imagine having 7 other hall of famers on your team? No other team was even close to that many those years.

Later in his career when that changed and he came back in 01-03, in a much more modern NHL, his point and goal totals at 36-38 look similar to what OV is doing now. It was probably also harder not having a 5 time art Ross winner and the 2nd all time points leader behind Gretzky on his team.

This area is the only one you can argue they aren’t even, especially if OV gets to 900. OVs accomplishments and trophy case is so much bigger that it’s really not that close. Lemieux is a ‘what if’ and OV is actually going to be the greatest goal scorer of all time due to tangible evidence.

Like I said, give it time. Let OV hit 900, retire, be inducted, and have his legend grow. Pretty soon we will talk about prime 07-10 OV as an unstoppable force, the memories of him being stopped will fade, just as they did for Lemieux.

Tryna predict how long it takes him to hit 894 if he only hits the floor I realistically see for him.


Age 37 . Goals 34 = 78 Goals remaning
Age 38 . Goals 29 = 49
Age 39 . Goals 27 = 22
Age 40 . Goals 24 = Crushes the record and creates some space.



Some numbers to back my predictions up.

In his 30's Ovi is consistently top 3 in goals scored ever for the age he is. Example Ovi leads all 36 year olds in NHL history with 50 goals.
At age 37 5 players have put up 32 goals or more.
At age 38 3 players have scored 30 goals or more.
At age 39 6 players have scored 27 goals or more.
At age 40 3 players have scored 24 goals or more.
At age 41 3 players have scored 20 goals or more.

Did you ever watch Mario play? This is so not close. Lemieux, like Gretzky, made the players around him better. OV has never been that player.

I'm not going to say ovi is better then Mario but compare prime Mario's team to prime ovis team for a second. I wonder how differently 08 ovi would get looked at had he had a jagr, Francis, Coffey type player with him. When ovi finally got another player on his team to have a monster playoffs he won a cup. Shocker.. as hockey is a team sport. We won't see another player like ovi in that 3 yr span where he was absolutely the best player for a while. Sure Mcjesus is amazing now but he doesn't play the physical game at all. Only thing that stopped ovi in those 3 years was a defense consisting of 6 guys named Sally and Mike Green with whatever dumpster fire goalie the caps could get

The reason I don't like this is that I can remember both of Mario's retirements (and the numerous speculated retirements) and public perception of him was just as strong then. Nostalgia has nothing to do with it. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you saw him play, but I can't wrap me head around the idea that you believe nostalgia factors in at all.

Been watching since the 80s. Lemieux and Gretzky are in their own class imo. I never saw Howe and Orr play. Ovi and sid are likely not far off from all of those guys. I remember lemieux coming out of retirement. I have the game on vhs haha. Absolutely amazing player who I hated for torching the caps over and over.

So you’re saying Backstrom is a scrub and only has a career because of OV? Nevermind that “adjusted points” is the stupidest and least scientific stat there is.

As for making players around you better, that’s not what goal scorers do. It’s the guys who can setup plays too. Ovechkin being able to one-time a pass into the top corner isn’t making anyone else a better player.
 
Ovechkin is a one-dimensional goal scorer like most wingers coming out of Russia.
Lemieux was an elite of the elite scorer and playmaker. You simply cannot talk about them in the same breath.
Lemieux is a Top 2 player ever.

Ovechkin threads always attract posters wanting to debate something not related to the topic. It's so weird and a bit cringe and it's been going on for years and years. No one cares, really.

Cant wait for his 800th goal and also the 802nd goal - 800 is an insane milestone that we wont see again for many years if ever after this and 802.. for obvious reasons means it's the final stretch - can he do it? Or rather, when will he do it? I'll very much enjoy the next 3 or so years of hockey.

You think if a playmaker makes a great pass, thus helping the goalscorer score the goal, then they have made that goalscorer more effective.

But if a goalscorer makes a great shot, thus helping the passer get an assist, then they have not made that passer more effective.

Am I accurately stating your opinion?
